Seedling care advice needed
by GTClover- 10 replies
- 1.2k views
Hi All, I need some seedling help. I have one tiny Chamaedorea elegans seedling with ~ 1/5 in (1 cm) green leaf (eophyll) and about the same length radicle. It's still in the warm spot it germinated in which has 2 4ft grow lights which I figured generates ~5k ft candles and is 85F day 75F nights. I put it in a ~ 3X5" pot with ~50% perlite 50% Promix. What I need to know is how much light and warmth will it need and when can it be moved into the general house environment. Going into summer we'll have average lows 65 to 75F and highs 75- 95F I have to admit that of the 53 seeds I bought around Christmas time (09) I have had only one successful germination so far. I've l…

I (my Bismarck) needs you help!!!
by buccaneers37- 8 replies

My 5' tall Bismarck had a few of its fronds fried this winter. I went out today to trim it up & I noticed the last shoot it put out had partially opened and it was “limp”, like it has no structure. One spear that looked mostly dead pulled right out and had what looked like cream cheese on the bottom 2-3” of it. It has another 5-6” long spear that looks healthy & seems tight in the crown. I went out and bought some copper fungicide (Kop-R-Spray) since I have heard people say this is what you use for fungus. I know you put this in the crown, but I have never used it before. Do I use it full strength or dilute it with water? How often do I apply? Is there anything el…

After a brief summer wind/rainstorm today, my Royal lost 3 spent fronds leaving this unusally colored crownshaft. Kinda looks like flames. Musta dropped a hundred pounds or so of fronds. These babys are heavy & can do some serious damage (last year, my neighbors corvette convertble top!) Randy

I-Drive Coconut and Royal palms in Orlando still thriving 1 2

Last week I got updated photos on the big plantings of mature coconut and royal palms along International Drive in Orlando near Sea World They appear to have suffered little or no damage after last winters cold. The hotel was formerly the Sheraton but is now Doubletree. They did a major relandscaping and planted some more royals at the south entrance to the property. The other royals and coconuts have been growing there around 10 years. here are the newly planted royals that have been added. That is Bambusa vulgaris 'Vittata' planted behind it. In fact they lined the entire property with a screen of this. This is a big timber bamboo that can grow 60ft and has golden ca…

Hey Everybody, It's been awhile since I've posted, but I am on vacation in Weston for the week and was wondering if anybody could recommend any retail specialty palm nurseries that are open to the public year-round? I was looking for the kind of place (Like Searle Bros.) where you could find uncommon to rare palms, especially in smaller sizes. Can't wait for your responses -Michael

Mulch for my palms! 1 2
by BS Man about Palms- 48 replies

Several people have asked me "Whats the deal on that El Corazon Mulch, is it any good?" I know a lot of people that use it, it is supposed to be "cooked" via sitting and decomposing, but what do I know? Well, I do know that the Green Waste recycling center, El Corazon (because its in the heart/middle of Oceanside) has $2 a truckload deals on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays. As Kris might say, "Lets go for a load". Driving up, you will spot this.. And friendly Anita will check that you live in Oceanside via a Cal Drivers liscense and take your $2. Its open from 9am to 12.

Palms at Woodgate and nearby places
by Walter John- 35 replies

Hello again from your recent Woodgate reporter. No, I haven't died, bad luck , I was there last week for 5 days and precisely 5 years ago I posted a thread on this town's palms, and funnily enough it is exactly 5 years on from 5 years ago. Woodgate Beach is located 350 km north of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia (approx 4 hour drive) and is easily accessible by car via the Bruce Highway. The drive from Brisbane is easy and direct. It is 36km (25 minutes) from Childers on the Bruce Highway and 54km (40 minutes)from Bundaberg, a major central regional city, and home to the famous Bundy rum. Having said that, let's go to the video, most of these palm pics are from ho…

Bully for Borassus
by Kumar- 7 replies
- 1.3k views
Here are photos I took of some palms near my home early this morning, (I have deliberately not included coconut) - 1. Borassus flabellifer - extremely adaptable and a common sight. The one on the left is full of mature fruit, notorious for dropping without warning. 2. Bully for Borassus - occassionally a very robust, thicker trunked and large crowned sub-species comes up, these are usually slower growing and not self-cleaning. (This one has had its stem cleaned manually). Any suggestions ? Close up of the leaf bases 3. P. sylvestris - these are the greenish variety, and can take root in any nook or cranny, sometimes more so than many Fic…

Also how do they get that tall and skinny, im guessing the soil and fertilization as well as the weather but doesnt cali get lightning and strong winds sometimes like florida?

i'm worried about my palms this summer. i was told they don't like heat and may be toast when temps reach 112F in july. the needles are in FULL shade and the windmills in part shade. i've just planted these this march, so they are the newest additions. my med.fan palms and washingtonia love the heat, but i'm worried about these. was i missinformed or should i be worried? thanks!

Hi everyone, I have been curious about some Butia things so I thought I'd post my questions/observations -Most Butia around here have yellow flowers, occasionally I have seen ones with purple/burgandy flowers, what does this mean? -Some small Butia have emrald leaf bases while others appear darker, is this just normal variation?
