I don't think either of the sprouted ones will make it. Pot them up, sure, but don't expect anything to happen. If you don't see any sign of a leaf after a month, root has probably rotted.🤷‍♂️ aztropic Mesa, Arizona

Hi. I had recently ordered some Borassus aethiopum seeds (from a vendor I had purchased seeds of other palms before and I found very reliable). Problem is, 2 out of 3 came in already sprouted. The largest seed, which is the one I have planted (directly in the ground), had NOT sprouted and I am hoping it is viable and it just was a bit slower. These two, though, I am not sure what to do and if they are salvageable or not. One seems to have a root damaged and soft/mushy halfway through (the one on the bottom), the other one has a stronger root and it clearly less damaged, but the tip is indeed somewhat damaged and it seems it is shaped like a "hook". Does it look like I should attempt to salvage these? I have pots deep enough for these to grow (they are 4 feet deep). I could absolutely use a backup if one in the ground does not sprout, but I don't want to attempt to grow a plant that will get stunted and die (especially in the case of the one with the healthier root, which is healthier but not going straight). Any advice?

yeah i've seen alot of variegated plants before and it looks like variegation to me. reason why it would randomly pop up is because of random genetic mutation. some indivitual plants have genes that make them more suspectable to forming variegation. so once in a while any part of them say a leaf can mutate during cell division, and a variegation will be created. often times these will revert after a while so you get normal growth, variegated, and then normal growth on top. though not always it depends how stable the mutation is, sometimes they are more permanent. variegations can never be passed down through. only the susceptibility to them.

The sulfur smell sure tells the tale, root rot. Good luck with the fungicide, construction dirt and masonry will limit drainage and you should amend the site so its drains if you plan to plant a tree there. Every hole you dig should be filled and watched for drain time to determine if you have a "clay pot" in the ground before planting. I had to dig through my top 3 1/2 feet of soil in arizona to get to dirt that would drain well. When I did the drainage test it dropped only half way in 24 hrs and was still mucky bottom at 72 hours. That spot may be an issue for any deep rooted tree unless you can get down to drainable dirt.

I didnt think they could look so good indoors, nice job! They do grow faster in the ground or even in a bigger pot. Mine went into the ground in 2011 about the same size as yours, its 20+ foot overall now.

lol you know I'd take this in a heartbeat if I wasn't so far. I lost my 6 foot, 4 headed speciosa to a sudden and severe mite infestation last summer. I replaced with a small one, so it'll be several years before I see blooms again.

I've been growing this Adonidia that i germinated 3 years ago here in Mallorca (Spain). I have it indoors on a pot and in winter I put a heat mat below the pot to keep the soil warm and always over 21ºc (70ºf). I'ts doing pretty well, and I'm wondering if anyone else is growing a christmas palm indoors just like me, if anyone does, share a photo of yours! Any tips to make mine grow faster? because I'm not really sure if its too small to be a 3 year old palm.

Yes, I hybridized radicalis x microspadix, producing about 10 seeds, all of which sprouted. The seeds were small. I hybridized microspadix x radicalis, producing only 3 seeds, but all 3 sprouted. It's a shame I lost almost everything while I was in the hospital.

Looks great if the blooms are gone you can't pollinate the resulting unfertilized seeds

I am not asking for a snake convention here, so yes I do mind them coming after other little critters in my yard. If I keep the ground relatively clear the Owls and hawks will keep the snakes and their prey out of my yard. I am a big fan of the raptors, do what I can to make it their kind of yard with making roosting spots. I get rabbits, no problem, they don't hide in piles of dead matter, but I don't want the snakes, some of which are venomous. My lab attacks snakes in his yard he is territorial. I don't want him getting bit by a water moccasin or bringing to me any dead critters.

I used to be able to get them here in florida but the smaller specialty nurseries that still exist dont carry them and they will probably never be offered in big box stores. I had 2 small ones killed quickly in 2010 @ 28F. I also had a small wodyetia same size that looked like it was going to make it, but it declined after a month and kicked it. The foxy ladies really crumpled up after one night, total brown. Being an F1 cross means that all siblings will not be the same in cold tolerance. Some will lean veitchia some will lean wodyetia. I have my doubts that you can expect better hardiness than a wodyetia, its a roll of the dice. There is a nice tall one in tampa at the zoo, dark green and probably 40 foot or more. F1 hybrids generally do not have consistency in expressed genetics. An S2 would be needed to get consistently expressed genetics and that would mean the F1 would have to be fertile.

Hard to go wrong with Dypsis / Chrysalidiocarpus . It seems a few species have found their way to my garden in the last couple of years. I don’t have this one , but truth be told , I don’t have enough room for all the species in the Dypsis genera . Harry

I already have huge piles of palm leaves around my garden I mulch what I can, but with a garden the size of mine it’s easier to pick them up and use mulch that I bring in. I don’t mind the critters, it’s the big leaf sheaths that look unsightly and take forever to break down. The mulch I get is from the electrical company’s that do vegetation maintenance for the power lines at a bargain price, so I just get it whenever they have it. Eventually I will have enough to make soil and use that as good layer of mulch. My sandy soil eats it up like it’s going out of fashion (the e weigh calls it the sand monster that eats anything) just look at any permaculture garden and you can see the difference with mulch or any bare patch of earth once mulched it transforms the soil. If you want your plants to grow with little effort mulch is the way to go!

Your post caught my eye!! O. K . where’s my shovel . Time to plant some palms at @happypalms . I’m in for a palm fix. I have a nice Dypsis Cabadae that needs planting , you just motivated me. Harry I have a nice , shady spot for this guy ! “Be free , spread your roots little palm.”

I had one too close to the house that I edited for that reason. It grew so fast and so big I was stunned. I started thinking about the trunks dyeing one at a time and them falling on my roof. Mine had 8 trunks of 6-8" caliper and was over 25' tall and not slowing down to my eye. One winter we had a freeze and it burned like almost every other leaf so it was pretty ugly then. Not very leaf hardy compared with my other palms, they are reportedly more cold tolerant than many of my palms, but less leaf hardy. Trimming the dead leaves was difficult with all the trunks and leaves. I decided the dead trunk falling thing was too much risk too close to the house, so I edited it and have one less problem these days. If I had known how big it would get I probably would not have planted it at that site.
