    Palm vandalism

Spines do deter. I'm on a busy sidewalk and have had fronds messed with before the palms got taller. Some were cut off with a machete, others were bent at the petiole. I put up a surveillance sign once when I thought it would happen again with newly planted stuff. I figured it was pedestrians angry at being touched by a palm. When working in the yard, I have been yelled at by people travelling down the sidewalk... 'Cut these leaves!' ... answered promptly with "No." Ryan

  8. Nice one, many shade loving plants means many a canopy plant, that and 20 years to create the shade! Looks like you will be planting a lot more palms, my garden has plenty of understory that’s for sure!

It was a great trip, we saw some very nice palms, especially the Lanonia's. And really fun catching up with old friends and then meeting a few new ones. Jeff

    DirecTV stumps

Assuming this is not anchored into the ground with a column of concrete, there may be other ways to get it off the ground if you don't want to just cut it off below grade with a sawzall, One way that has worked for me is to get two metallic two hole straps like below similar in size to your post which I suspect is either 1-1/4" or 1-1/2" or 2". Take a piece of scrap lumber like a 2X6 or 4x4 or similar, and put the two hole straps around your TV post and secure them onto the piece of lumber so that it's like 4-6" above ground level, use some larger screws like #10 and drive the straps/collars real tight. Now you have a piece of lumber oriented horizontally above the ground wedged tight to the post. If you have a bottle jack or a floor jack, put that under this piece of wood, and sit under it another piece of wood and just start jacking. It should slowly pull the post loose as you jack up. This works for me a few times without needing a truck to pull it which in itself can be a problem if a chain or rope snaps suddenly it could create a mean projectile.

    Plant an Acrocomia
  18. I have a bunch of plantings along the outside edge of my property, I came home and found most of the palms damaged. Someone went and broke 5 fronds off my triangle palm, 3 fronds off both Chinese fan palms, 3 fronds off both Fishtail palms, and three fronds off a robolini. All outward facing fronds looks like someone just grabbed each fronds and folded it backwards. At first I thought it was a vehicle that drove over the sidewalk and hit these palms but that can't be because there are one way signs, no boat trailer signs by the curb and these palms are at least 5-7 feet inside these signs. Puzzling.

    TEXAS 2026

Our summers are always cloudless for months and months, NO breeze with temperatures in upper 90s to low 100s on average. I take any humid day near the water any day. But get used to record breaking temperatures and droughts in Houston . The drought is moving to the SE. We're already in a drought since 2022 and according to meteorologists, there's absolutely no change in weather pattern for South Central /Central Texas. I'm not sure about East Texas.

Has anyone skinned a needle palm before?

Yea , I have one that would put up quite a fight if I tried to clean the trunk! Harry First year in the ground! It is just starting to harden off after cutting the brown fronds off . Full sun , south facing slope. In another year I will be able to tell you if gophers like them or not.🤬

  25. I recently moved to a new downsized house in Seminole, FL from St Petersburg. I now have a blank slate to plant again. I'd really like to plant at least one Beccariophoenix alfredii. Seminole is located just to the northwest of St Pete (up on the hill, 42 feet above sea level). I'm hoping for a local grower, but I will drive (day trip) to pick one up if necessary. If anyone knows where I could possibly buy one, I'd appreciate it. I'll even consider having it shipped if anyone has had good experiences with that. I'd like to get one that's in at least a 3 gallon pot. We didn't have a freeze at my new house (38F was the low) this winter, but I heard most of inland Florida was really cold (teens and low 20's) so this may be an impossible find this year. I figured I'd just give it a shot. Thanks in advance. Jim Cameron
