This is why I dig my own, most landscapers know nothing about palms and even some dont know much about gardening. I didn't want to be hostile as I have not met your landscaper. Knowing what I know now I would be upset as this was easily prevented. I hate to see folks come on palmtalk when palms are already very sick. Troubleshooting without digging and observing is difficult and sometimes a recovery window is gone. And most of us know or have already been advised how to test and prep a hole in construction dirt or any dirt. I have parts of my yard, under the back fence where the builders brought in some dense whitish clay to support the fence. The hardest pic axe dig per inch I have ever done. Fortunately it was only 18"-2' thickness up by the fence. Anything planted near it is stunted, its water repellent dirt, its like a container, probably purposefully so to keep the fence footing in place with our rain. Construction dirt can be completely inhospitable to plants. I am an old palmnut, I would dig and dig till I found some drainage as drainage is essential to some degree for all plants. It might take me a few weeks but I would reclaim that land. The deep rooted palms, like alfredii, that are drought tolerant especially need it. I am sorry for your loss.

Although I've sent out several hundred of these, I have more to offer if anyone is interested. A very prolific tree.

This is one that I have been able to keep under control. Harry It has enjoyed giving us a garden view over our main bathtub in our master bedroom without the need for a curtain. I planted this over 20 years ago . I bought it from Jungle Music as a Caryota “ something” ( I forget , but rare ) single trunk . I called Phil when it started suckering and he said it got mixed up and is indeed C. Mitis .🙁Last year I cut 3-4 huge , flowering trunks out and thinned the base. There are plenty of younger stems that will be tall enough when the next , older trunks flower. It seems perpetually regenerating . This is one of my smallest clumps , others are used for privacy and are much bigger!

Most problematic trim Ive ever done with half dead leaves hanging on and no not the lower ones necessarily. I also cut off many succors or it would have had 20 trunks. Looked great green, but the cold made it a big ugly headache and I knew that 7' from the house was too close. more like 20'. I only had so many spots in my yard and this thing sucked up the space of 3 palms. I replaced it with a archontophoenix purpurea which grows very slowly and a satakentia which now has 8 1/2 feet of trunk. Too many palms I like and not enough room for them all in the outdoor garden. Shady or even half day shade spots are especially scarce in my yard.

This year has been a 30(?) drought so recovery to a full crown has been a little slow. The weather appears to be changing now as we are getting some rain, so I can expect perhaps 4-5 more leaves by fall. Its not fast as a grower but baileys are very nice looking palms that throw some decent shade, IMO.

Some nurseries in California carry them. Probably not seedlings and may only be wholesale. Palm Island Nurseries. Listed some 5 gal. size. May be worth a look/inquiry??? 😉

Shouldn't the people who planted it for you have known the site wouldn't drain properly? With the lack of drainage you have seen, I dare say most palms would not have succeeded... With the proper soil amendments and drainage, I still think Becarriophoenix alfredi is your best choice. I'm really sorry you went through this bad experience. You certainly deserved better... I still think the people you had install this palm should have known better than to just stick it in the ground and leave you like that.

Just one question: does the radicle grow deeper from apical point or from the cotyledonary petiole?

In a country such as Australia with some of the deadliest snakes in the world, and with 4 of the deadliest snakes in the world in my area I fully understand the snake thing well, and having great big piles of palm mulch lying around is not a good practice for sure. Another danger factor for me is the fire threat from such a pile of palm leaves, a mound 8 feet tall of palm leaves waiting to explode in flames in bushfire conditions in my area is a serious threat so I have to burn those leaves in winter as part of a fire management protection in summer. Which is an interesting issue who would have thought about a palm garden creating a fire danger threat! I also live in a very large area of national parks and state. Have a google for Yuragir national park NSW Australia, with my property at Halfway creek Grays road and there’s no shortage of eucalyptus trees that’s for sure, and you will see how large of an area, and when it comes to the critters I live in their habitat so all creatures great and small are welcome @happypalms And I got some more mulch, and iam in mulch heaven, loving life in the bush with my garden, where the world alone doesn’t bother me!

That’s exactly what they can become, monsters out of control going on a rampage in the garden. And they are definitely best kept away from none gardening people who just want a palm by the pool or in that tiny courtyard. With no real knowledge of palms they can be a disaster in the wrong hands!

Got a photo of the C elatior stem Richard? Very young to have fully pinnate fronds like that. Might be C tacanensis.

Other seasons it has looked decent again by Christmas. Other years it has looked fine by Christmas. Once at least two new healthy fronds open, it distracts the eye from any remaining damaged ones. I tend to think that it would be hard for an overnight radiation freeze, sandwiched by double digit (C) temperatures the day before and after to completely kill an otherwise healthy and established bungalow. No hurry to see that theory tested however. It's hard to see in the early morning light in the rush to get to work, but it looks like it still has some green remaining, which will help. Good news is that from what I can see, a near neighbour's ones look fine. They (house and palms) are on isolated small rise in an otherwise flat area - they sit about 6-8m higher. Glad for that, as for some angles from home, their now sizable and flourising bangalows form a nice background/horizon that complements the view of my own palms. I know that place has sold since the people that planted those palms were there. New owners could be forgiven for not taking into account that this was the worst feeze in 10 years and not wanting to look at damaged palms for a few months. So far, my two other bungalows and everything else looks untouched but won't really know till the weekend to see in broad daylight. I still have pepper plants that look just the same as they did in mid summer (they are against a north facing wall of house and were covered as well).

This can happen following heavy rainfall events and very wet soils. It is usually not serious unless it is followed by a second or third malformed leaf.
