    What’s been germinating @happypalms

A few more up this week, it’s always good to see a few more popping up. Iam very happy with some home grown Metallica seeds with a hundred percent success rate. Goes to show fresh seeds produce the best results.

Yes I did and that's pretty amazing . Maybe the owner is willing to give away some seeds . I would knock on their door or leave a nice note with my phone number .

    Cycad cones and flushes

Hunting down Voyager 1 I don't know about Cycads being slow growing, this thing is a rocket. Seedling in '21. Planted in the garden in '22 and now over 6 foot tall.

    Copernicia alba

Bump. Old thread, but didn’t think it's worth starting a new one to ask this question: why can't I grow this species? It should grow here, solid 9b climate, no real cold, but no real heat either. Livistona's are happy here, Butia a breeze...this species comes from similar climates but something seems to be missing. Has anyone had any luck with them in the bay area or NZ? Maybe they just need proper summer heat to get cranking. Thoughts??

What is your current yard temperature?

66F at 10:40PM.. with a few spots, inc. some spots outside downtown PHX still in the 70s.. 4 ..or 5.. day stretch in the 90s starts tomorrow. Long -term local, or in town for some Spring Training games, a rando, end of winter weekend get away, or the UofA / KU game on Saturday? STAY HYDRADTED, and tackle any trails in the mornings / evenings. As warm as it will be here, curious, i took a look at forecasts across the border. Think the " Valley of the Sun " is gonna be toasty over the next few days? I present, ..The current forecast for Hermosillo. While temps down there tend to run a few degs. above what we typically experience, 100 / 100+ readings are well above their average. If they do manage to reach the suggested highs of 106, ...and/or 102 forecast, both would break the Feb. record of 101.3 down there. 106 itself is the record high for ..March.

Fwiw I shipped a giant Chewy cat food box to Miami for $20. That's really not that bad when you think about it. You're right on the liners but the closest I could do right now is McDonald's cups. I've got about 8 billion of them cuz I was trying to win that 10k Lowes gift card during Monopoly and now they're doing 99 cent iced coffee. I don't want to uproot anything that's settled in, but moving forward I'll throw them in McDs cups and an old Wellspring box if that makes a difference. I'm getting a sprout a week of these or so.

They come back easy. If you cut them it will shoot out 2 or 3 shoots. I trim mine back every year to keep them bushy. Those and my crotons in the open defoliate almost every year.

I like the opinions! 🤣 I picked this particular palm as I was pretty sure this level of detailed information does not exist anywhere. I suppose our dumb internet culture is about to get a lot dumber.

What is your current yard temperature?

This is very common where I live in the AZ desert. On my commute to work before sunrise, it's not uncommon for me to see temp differences of 10-15F as I drive through the mountains (warmer temps being near the higher areas). When there are higher winds or cloud cover the temps are more even.

    2025-2026 Florida Winter

Hit 45F for a low this morning. Temp went up to near 50F for a few hours lastnight before we managed to sneak in some radiational cooling before sunrise. For the next 7 days, not looking at anything below 50F. For the next 10-15 days, very low chances of dropping into the 40s. Spring is on, but do we get another frost? My guess is probably, or at least close to it, but i think we might just be done with freezes here. Side note, the warmth from the past few weeks (minus the cold snap we just had) has pushed everything to flower and start leafing out here. Everything is doing something at this point, maples are getting leaves now and the birches are starting as well. Oaks will follow sooner than later.

Absolutely. I'm trying to do more YouTube, getting started on Instagram, and then there's that whole 20 page thread in Palms in Pots.

What is your current yard temperature?

Right now it's 42f just a little bit ago it was 28 typically when we get these cold air drainage nights it always warms up after a little bit.

What is your current yard temperature?

This is what it's like living in a valley when it's a clear night in winter. as you can see needmore is at 29f and areas, south and north are in the mid-low 40s ans 50s. When you live in a valley , the area is prone to cold air drainage. As air cools on mountain peaks or plateaus, it becomes denser and heavier than the surrounding air. Gravity then pulls this cold air down the slopes and into valleys, often creating a frost pocket or a localized microclimate at the bottom.
  25. @JLM I was going to suggest a chainsaw too, but for palm trunks a reciprocating saw is a lot easier and safer. One person cuts, the other pushes it over. With no kickback risk it is for sure a lot safer that way. A rope on the one near the fence should be good enough, at least on a non-windy day. I felled 8 queens with 10-15 feet of trunk 2 summers ago. They were right up near the house with no drop zones. So I used an electric chainsaw to lop off 2-3 foot long chunks at a time. I just had to try and drop the pieces *not* on my A/C or any plants below.

Did you read the post? These are seedlings that came up after the 2021 freeze from seed left behind by the mother palm(s) in the streetview. Some of the "seedlings" are now taller than the house lol
