  2. Thank you so much! Yes, I assumed someone with palm knowledge would bring a Medemia argun there since they aren't very easy to come across! haha You really know your plants! I can't believe how common Bursera hindsiana are for not showing up on any of my google searches when I was trying to identify it... but that's totally it! Thank you! Bahia de Los Angeles is about 6 hours from the border, however I live by Mexicali, so it's a little closer than coming from San Diego. Thank you for the sand dollar ID too! bonus!
  3. Great shots as usual Kyle.. Agree with @idontknowhatnametuse ..wonder if someone with good palm knowledge brought them down there. Interesting none the less. Curious.. How long is the trip there from the border?.. FYI: " unknown " tree in your photo album from your trip = Bursera hindsiana, AKA: Red Elephant Tree, ..due to having predominantly Manzanita red toned bark. Not 100% certain but thinking the Sand Dollar in one of your shots is either Encope grandis, Perforated Sand Dollar, ..or E. micropora, Six -Pored Sand Dollar. Both occur in that part of BCN.
  4. Estaba con la esperanaza que alguien aqui conoceria la persona responsable para esa sorpresa en el medio de la nada! XP There are trunking coconut palms all the way up to San Felipe! There is actually one on the side of the main road just a few miles south of the outskirts of Mexicali as well that's about to get a trunk that I've seen over the last few years.
  5. The assumed palm IDs are in the last paragraph!

    Bromeliads 2026

I absolutely love these. The variety of the color, the cups make them seem like they'd be easier to water, frogs seem to like them, but I'm fighting with myself so hard not to fall in love with another variety of plant. The idea of a one-stop tropical shop sounded really cool until uhhh yeah some things get huge. And some things get expensive. Anyway pardon the ADHD post, your broms are gorgeous.
  8. I’ve been cleaning up the garden beds recently, and they are packed with bromeliads. Here’s some of my favorites so far this year. They really start to multiply over the years.
  9. Second picture is definitely a lonesome mangrove. The 3rd and 4th picture are the same specimen, a perfectly trimmed Sabal or Copernicia. 5th is definitely a juvenile C. nucifera. What is the latitude of this extremely well tended garden in the middle of nowhere? Best
  10. Photo 4 - Bismarckia. To the right of the Cocos looks like Brahea.

Queen palm spear pull round 2

A fellow Floridian can better tell you how quickly these recover. For me, it come down to cost. Queens are very cheap. I would opt for a larger one in 10" or 14" pot.

Zone 8 - Raleigh, NC - Home Garden

Palm Sunday - looks like our last freeze is behind us! Going in-ground this weekend with a few agave and Sabals. Also adding a L. Chinensis to my protected section. Elephant ears and exotics are going outside. This year will be all about non-palm additions. Working on adding “fillers, thrillers, and spillers” to my beds. Saving $ for some rare broadleaf evergreens around my wooded area, and a lot of flowers for my wife. Also working on re arranging my garden to be more low-maintenance. Putting the right plants in the rights spot, and not having to water so much. My favorite addition has been a Bog Planter/Frog Hotel I’ve started for the kids. Really looking forward to this taking off.
  13. Winter’s well over for me at this point and I was happy that my backyard queen had no issues considering I protected it well. I decided to not protect my front yard queen, which is similarly a young seed grown palm about 2 years old, as a test of its hardiness. Winter ended and I saw it relatively unscathed only the spear being damaged which i assumed was just because it was more tender growth. Fast forward to today I got suspicious of the lack of new growth, and welp the whole spear pulled out. I started peroxide treatment and i’ll keep it up daily but i’m wondering should i do a trunk cut or wait it out? I’m not strongly concerned but I don’t want to lose this palm either.

    New Guinea Highlands

Intriguing subject regarding the lack of palms from what one would expect to be one of the most lucrative areas in the world-New Guinea. It causes me to wonder how Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens, on the Intracoastal in WPB was able to score this Calyptrocalyx spicatus probably 70 years ago:

I think A macrocalyx is one of those species where the >2000m examples are the outliers for the species. In cultivation A macrocalyx is known to be particularly wimpy to cold especially the red var marie. I guess possibly most in cultivation originate from much lower altitude which would be true tropics? Heterospathe muelleriana and H obriensis interest me because they aren’t known below 1000m so would expect them to have some cool tolerance. Not sure I’ll ever be going on a seed hunting expedition up there, good luck to anyone willing!

    "Swamp Things" for Your Garden

Here’s a picture of Sabal palmetto along the St. John’s River in central florida. Roots can grow in air and in standing water. The river edges get flooded from each hurricane and thats what probably eroded away the shoreline overtime. I thought this picture clearly shows how resilient and impressive this species is.

What is your current yard temperature?

Mid to upper 90s across the valley at 2:42PM under haze and high clouds.. Looking at the early afternoon T.C. Sat. picture, as expected, some storms starting to break out across S.AZ atm with more lighting up the spine of the Sierra Madre further south.. Note the " spinny, " Mesoscale Convective Vortex ( MCV ) thing approaching the borderlands from interior, northern Sonora, and how thunderstorm activity is enhanced on it's left side as it progresses north northwest ward.. We'll see how that plays into any further expansion of shower / storm activity closer to the valley / rest of Cen. AZ thru the rest of the afternoon / evening.. Some " popcorn -y " buildups starting to flare up near the Maricopa /Pinal /Pima county line, and near the I -8 west of Casa Grande also. If any of that stuff can get itself up ..and sustain itself over the coming hours as it tries to get closer to town ..then the chances are higher for us seeing more than just increased cloud cover from it. Passing, hit and miss sprinkles, a burst of dusty breezes, or nothing, expect one of those warm ..and slightly humid.. evenings as dew points jump from around 40 currently to near 50 by midnight ..per the current forecast..

    New Guinea Highlands

I had no idea Areca macrocalyx was remotely possible in cooler climates. But it is not allowed here anyway , nor is P. lepidotus.
  26. I noticed the vast majority of seedlings in Seller's photos are variegated and the variegation is atypical of what I imagined it would be. In the past only 2-4 seedlings out of 1,000 offspring of a variegated mother would show variegation. Seller rip-off for sure but not the case with these seedlings.
