Shouldn’t be a problem for you I don’t think Richard. Mine is a different kind of heat, but mine breezed through 44C a few times this summer in filtered afternoon sun. Seedlings don’t mind either. I haven’t heard that they are too sensitive to humid heat either. Northland NZ would be right at the top of my list of places on earth to grow palms. Of all the places I’ve visited, it’s where every palm is just so perfectly green and lush. And where else can you grow Juania, Lepidorrachis, Hedyscepe, Ceroxylon, highland Geonoma and Parajubaea side by side with Pinanga javana, phillipinensis, all New Cal sp, most Dypsis and Chrysalidocarpus and even some Areca species? I’ve never visited Hawaii but I’d imagine it’s one of the closest places but just cooler all year round allowing those heat sensitive species to thrive (while limiting the true equatorial species). H. xanthovillosa “Shogun” is one of my favorites. It has so far never made seed. It always catches my eye and I can’t resist touching the soft flowers and taking a photo. It also does a good job controlling erosion in this area where landslides have happened. As mentioned earlier in this topic I did previously live on one of two farms owned by Sherry Ballester but have lived in my forever farm since 2017. Sherry no longer owns either of her farms and has moved away from PR, missed by all. I enjoy this topic and check in occasionally when not concentrating on growing every kind of interesting or tasty or pretty tropical plant. Sorry, just a hobby so nothing for sale.

Here on the west coast of Oz only cunninghamiana and alexandrae are common. The other 4 are completely missing from the mix as they are purely collectors palms. I suspect that many of the Archontophoenix getting around are not pure and are various combinations of cunninghamiana and alexandrae. I reckon I have quite a few Alabangs growing here. A pure cunninghamiana will have the ramenta underneath the leaf. I’ve grown some seed thinking they are cunninghamiana and they don’t have the ramenta. Over time they get a faint amount of silver under the leaf. So probably a cunninghamiana mother and pollen from an alexandrae. I’m growing all the 6 species here but I need to try and seperate them to try and create straight up species in the future.

Meg, what is your secret may I ask? Anything special or just the cape coral rains? Its a gorgeous houailou! Mine is so much slower at this point, congratulations for growing an incredible specimen! I am puzzled by the observation that hookeri were wimps. They are not sun lovers but they can take a few hours direct sun here. I do have the one I posted heavily amended in a very sandy area.

I think P gracilis, P capitata and P baviensis are generally considered to be the hardiest species. I’d guess P tashiroi would do well too given its native habitat.

Im not on EC Florida, but saw 24 in the big freeze and 12 freezes total, all light except the big one. Mine are small still but survived with minimal cover (weedmatt in a desperate attempt to save them). It worked but they look a bit ratty now and are not trunking yet, i will try and get photos a bit later. They also dealt with 25 last winter when the panhandle got all the snow, no protection, and almost defoliated then too. Sandy soil i keep dry before and after i think helped as well as canopy and smaller size. They do see some wind from the NW, but i tried to block the worst of it.

Last week I got a mail from a longtime palmfriend that he wanted to get rid of his collection of young Cycads. In his opinion you have to have a lot of patience with them and he was a little bit fat up with them. So I went to collect the plants, knowing that I, being five years younger than my friend, probably will have a little bit more time to enjoy these plants. I got Dioon edule and califanoi, Macrozamia spiralis, Johnsonii, miquellii and communis, Zamia Vasquesii, Cycas multifrondis, sexseminifera, taitungensis, multipinata, ferruginea and a few Cycas hybrids. I am a happy guy! Tomorrow I will try to upload a few photo's!

Could magnesium do the trick to get the plant more green too?

This is the Macrazamia serpentina I did show you earlier. Up to now, it produced in my kitchen two new leaves this summer with rather big and a plumose-like appearance. Right now it is producing a third leave, so I put it outside in a protected place and I hope the new leave will be shorter and more upright! I'll keep you posted.

If you're looking for other varieties of bamboo, I have Dendrocalamus validus, B. textilis mutabilis, B. chungii barbellata, Triple hybrid Dendrocalamus latiflorus x D.daii x B.textilis and B. guangxiensis. Even though everything just started shooting, I may take some divisions as I need to clean up many of these.

They actually do fine in the sunniest, driest, highest uv, hottest parts of Texas.(If given consistent moisture at the roots) What they dislike is the inconsistent moisture of Texas(feast or famine). They like the consistency of moisture in an irrigated lawn, in Texas. Think of a lawn in the area that browns in dry spells as opposed to one regularly wAteered and stays green.

Yes, Unique is where I picked up my BA and bambusa gracilis. I will be back for more on my first stage of creating a canopy. I would like another 9 BA's or mules. For their height and cold tolerance I could mix in phoenix sylvestris but I am not sure how I feel about them long term. Bottomline, I need a large palm or two in the front yard and a couple clusters of large palms in the back behind where we will place a pool. Then I will place smaller or more rare palms around. I am still somewhat of an open canvas in the backyard.

Not in San Diego or anywhere in CA. They will grow in the southernmost parts of hot humid Florida as well as Hawaii but San Diego doesn’t have the necessary heat in summer and they can’t handle cool temperatures in the winter sorry to say. Rob123 is referring to a Pinanga species when he wrote “Maroon Crownshaft.”

I had three total. Two died and the third was making a recovery, but would have never looked right with pretty severe narrowing of the trunk where all the damaged leaves fell off post freeze, in light of that, I cut it down. Two of three were large about 20-25ft. My yard got down to about 28. I removed a bunch of palms because of how disfigured their trunks would have been.

Is it a common hedge palm where you live?
