  3. Very nice, has already sprouted! I can see it lost some limbs but it looks much better than mine! I bet it can survive 0 C if it happens sporadically as long as you keep the soil dry. If mine survives, next winter I will cover the soil around it with plastic to stop the water and also dig a trench around it.

  5. Well done Tracy-not an easy plant to get up to that size.
  6. Hakea laurina(and many of the Hakeas) grows very well in Southern California and flowers after only a couple of years. Great plant
  7. It has been 4 years since the first inflorescence emerged on this Puya alpestris ssp zoellnarii. This is the first time since then that it has bloomed. I am getting excited for the most spectacular display my garden gives. Neighbor's periodically ask me when it will flower again and I finally can answer with something other than "patience", since I never know until it happens.

    Cool dypsis possibly a hybrid

I got mine from Bret too. It didn't look too interesting until it got bigger so I had kind of ignored it. Also, when I planted it, I somehow forgot to put a ripper on it so it had no water for a year or two and didn't grow. Doing good now, one of my favorites.

RIP Maria Banda Wash - Fresno CA

Sad to hear of her passing, especially in the manner it transpired.

For some, Florida drought is getting very "extreme"

    Planted a Hedycepe

@oroenpaz Ditto that info, my seedlings are erratic growers withing the seed crop. My smaller diameter Hedyscepe in the back yard is a better parent than the heavy bodied one in the front yard.
  12. just secured another 5 -1 gallon Butia Eriospatha sale will end Sunday thank you

    Colvillea racemosa

An interesting feature with this tree that I've noticed is that it 'closes' all its leaves at night. Possibly an adaptation to conserve moisture in a desert environment?🤷‍♂️ aztropic Mesa, Arizona

    Southern Hemisphere Growing Season 2025/26

Looks like we get another week of summer, but next Thursday looks like a reality check...
  15. Some plants just have a genetic flaw that makes them not grow normally. It is rare but does happen . Harry

    What’s getting planted @happypalms thread

I think the Ernie will stay in the pot for now , I don’t know how long , as it is faster growing than I thought. This was the first one I got from @DoomsDave and it is a fast grower but needs full shade. The Syagrus S. looks like it is shade grown and I was thinking about a nice full sun position in the courtyard but it may burn badly and they are so slow growing here that it will look bad for a few years or longer , hmmm. Harry🤔

    Dwarf dypsis lutescens

The dwarf variety look nice . I still really like my full sized Lutescens, I have two . There is one that stopped putting out new stems right after trunking . The other one still sends out a new stem now and then . Both are colorful , large and very controlled. I don’t think I’ve seen any dwarf varieties here . Harry
  18. I have had this happen before on other varieties of palms, but not twice like this one. It just does it out the blue for no apparent reason, growing great then it just flips out, this is the only geonoma that does this in my collection! Richard
  19. The Schizophylla is a tough palm anywhere for that one, the Ernie a nice little corner in the shade. Richard
  20. Harry’s Palms

    What’s getting planted @happypalms thread

Perfect planting size . I have a new one to plant but it is in a bigger pot so I have to find the right spot that will allow me to dig a hole large enough . Harry Syagrus Schizophylla ready for the garden , keeping Ernie company for now.
  21. Could it be a genetic flaw or something? Do you have others of this species that do not display this malady? Harry
  22. Harry’s Palms

So What Caught Your Eye Today?

I wonder if this is the one they moved last year. I was wondering if that palm survived , they are very root sensitive . I know they have more than one Bizmarkia down there . Harry
  23. Just a prank. Visited his garden during after hours and replaced the ptycho with a tor tor!
  24. Ptychosperma was in the ground under canopy and it made it surprisingly! Sandy soil helped. I didn't even add any protection
  25. Thanks you know your broms a lot better than me!
  26. I can see why you bring them indoors, in a cold climate like that with ptychosperma elegans!
