So What Caught Your Eye Today?

I wonder if this is the one they moved last year. I was wondering if that palm survived , they are very root sensitive . I know they have more than one Bizmarkia down there . Harry
  3. Just a prank. Visited his garden during after hours and replaced the ptycho with a tor tor!
  4. Ptychosperma was in the ground under canopy and it made it surprisingly! Sandy soil helped. I didn't even add any protection
  5. Thanks you know your broms a lot better than me!
  6. I can see why you bring them indoors, in a cold climate like that with ptychosperma elegans!

    Bromeliads ID

I like var gruberi more. Larger and darker patterns
  8. I grow a lot of palms, and archontophoenix species I won’t grow for a good reason. They simply grow to fast and need constant attention and water. To look good they need constant repotting. You have choosen your container well!
  9. My climate is 9B, not too different from that of @Phoenikakias . Occasional mild frost but potted palms are brought indoors when cold.
  10. Used to be Till cynea but I think the name was changed

    Coralloid roots gone wild

Good question, only a true grower would ask that question!
  12. I do believe your climate is temperate correct? If so try to avoid rock mineral based substrate, it’s too cold in winter especially when wet. Go for a warmer substrate mix like coco coir perlite and a little good quality potting soil. A much warmer substrate mix. If you want to grow subtropicals and tropicals in cold climates.

For some, Florida drought is getting very "extreme"

worsening From the NWS Tampa Bay discussion "During the weekend, a couple of shortwaves will rotate through the southeastern US, dragging the frontal boundary through the Florida Peninsula. Moisture will pool ahead of the front, with PWAT values forecast to approach 2 inches, allowing for numerous showers and storms to spread south through the forecast area Saturday and Saturday night, then gradually clear out from north to south by Sunday evening as drier air fills in behind the front. QPFs for the entire event have been trending lower through the last couple of forecast cycles, but 5 day QPFs are still in the 0.75-1.50 inches, which should bring a small amount of relief from the ongoing drought."

  15. Not as warm as that but this weather still feels quite warm in the sun in the afternoons and nights are cool but no concerns about frost yet. All in all been a good growing season and palm have had 9 months to grow out last Winter's hail and slight frost damage. Wish palms looked like this all year. Even my youngest/smallest bangalow is trunking and way over my head now.
  16. Some red beauty
  17. A bit of a wow look at that flower moment. 26 years old and I have never seen it flower until today. I dont know what variety it is but it’s one spectacular flower. At first I thought an iris flower!

So What Caught Your Eye Today?

Ptychosperma wotoboho tucked in for the coming winter!
  19. A very special hakea all the way from Western Australia, the other side of Australia 5000 kms away. It doesn’t mind my climate but a lot of Western Australia plants can be tricky in my wet season, growing successfully until a big wet season hits. Great for growing palms but not dry climate plants from WA. So @Tyrone this ones for you!
  20. A nice tropical looking draceana easy to grow as most draceana are. Slow growing with these one’s around 26 years old. Iam sure in a tropical climate they would grow a bit faster. Easy to propagate from cuttings and easy to grow just add water!
  21. This is the second time this has happened to this Geonoma, once I can understand, perhaps a grower mistake. But twice now so what am I doing wrong. It has recovered both times. But what’s going on?

For some, Florida drought is getting very "extreme"

We shall see. Maybe it will be the usual where it mostly waters the ocean. Whenever they call for heavy rain, we get nothing much. The real storm will hit when there is a high degree of confidence in only a light misting.
  24. Throwing a few in the ground, tried and tested for my climate, I know they grow easily so get a few more exotics in the ground. I know my garden and the dry spots to the wet areas, and choosing what tolerates a little dry is the key. Which makes it a lot easier for planting out saving all those wet areas for the good stuff. Chuniophoenix nana Japanese variegated rhapis darumashinikiarenga hookerianakerriodoxa elegans
  25. A few more seeds of a few interesting varieties. Starting to get into a few cycas species they always are winner for any palm grower, just set and forget and wait while the palms grow, a great sideline plant cycas!

So What Caught Your Eye Today?

A neglected Hyophorbe lagencaulis (bottle palm) at Balboa Park, San Diego, CA. It’s amazing it’s still alive considering how neglected this palm has been. I believe it was planted in 2021 or 2022.
