It’s been a relatively mild summer compared to other years. I haven’t actually been out to Ventura in over a month. Usually I hit up Ventura for the natural ac that is the Pacific Ocean. But haven’t needed to this year. If you ever have any pup palms you wanna sell let me know I can meet you up!

It’s probably climate. But wow what a striking beauty. I have another spear forming, so hopefully it opens up to a deeper red.

Nowadays, they grow like weeds overhere!🌴

Very nice, I hear they like cool weather...!

Yep, its a Permian mudstone derived duplex. Old, acidic, and leached, like so many Aus soils, but the topsoil has high natural organic matter levels, and seems to respond pretty quickly to added nutrients. Although the hardpan requires a bit of management, it's soooo much better to work with than the hydrophobic nightmare of the South Arm sand. Back on topic...I was reading Dowe's description of A cunninghamiana last night in Australian Palms, and the purple colouration seems to fall within the species parameters, so I guess this population has been studied at some stage in the past, or there are other populations with similar characteristics maybe? Dowe also mentions that cunninghamiana extends right up to Mt Elliott at Townsville, so another 250km north of Eungella...another population to explore! Interesting that Livistona australis also tops out at Paluma in the mountains just north of Townsville.

I have two Baselonga planted together that look very similar to the small potted one. They are very slow at that age. Harry Dypsis Basilonga , tied together to keep the petioles from breaking in the wind. The leaves are very long for the size of the petiole. The petiole are very dark when first emerging. Harry

No , I have regular business there . We are out there two to three times a week. Right now I have a lot of work for a vendor out that way . Yesterday was the hottest I’ve seen in a while , usually it is in the 90,s. I can watch the temp climb as I drive the 126 through Filmore and Piru . Harry

Just giving one of the best Australian palms around a bit of palm talk tourism promotion, as your next holiday spot down under in Australia if you want to see them in habitat for yourself on holidays.

Mine is in full sun now and the red is not near as prominent . For 15 years or more it was much more pronounced and it would last well over a week. I planted it as a seedling in the shade of other palms. It flowers regularly , right now it has two spathes , but no fruit yet. I have found that deep watering helps it fight the burning leaf problem . They can handle lots of water , in fact it is necessary in warmer or hot climates. Harry

They are going good. The seedlings I potted up mid winter all survived. Not a good time to pot up but I had to, due to the fact they dislike being transplanted as seedlings and from the ground. So I thought as soon as they appeared each one was carefully teased out with a large bbq fork. I did some the other day as well and a couple today so a good update timing for sure 👍

Slightly OT: I just just got a Floribunda order in and have way too many pots and need to make some room. If any Houston PT'ers want to try an Allagoptera Arenaria I have some neglected 1g's and I'll give you one. Shoot me a DM and I can leave one out for you. Porch pickup in League City.

You’ve got a good soil then. I would call that a duplex soil. Archontophoenix should love it because the lower part will hold moisture and nutrient. Beach dune sand would be a constant battle. It would go hydrophobic after about 10 minutes. Perth sand was like that. Constantly feeding it, always using wetting agent. Mulching it every few months only to have it disappear again. Your new place sounds exciting.

And today’s little special winner is a nice healthy Geonoma pycnostachys, straight out of the end of winter and into the ground. The full royal treatment for this beauty, quality soil amendments along with being right next to the tap, pole position in the garden went into this one, the old chicken pidgeon coop, that had 20 years off bird poo. If I can’t grow this one in that soil iam going home!

Iam not to sure what gives such deep red, I do know it’s anthocyanins that cause the red. But some years I get a lot of deep red colour and other years lighter red. It could be temperature, moisture, heat, cold. Whatever it is we need more of it!

When I wrote seeding I did mean seeding indeed, must not be confused with seedling, no typo.
