I am not sure what varieties they are as there are so many hybrids in Florida , but I think your best bet would be to buy a more mature palm with some trunk that has distinctly dwarfed characteristics (not unhealthy). I have observed some beautiful dwarfs that seem to be a mix of types with trunks only 13 to 16 cm in diameter and leaves that are about 2.5 to 3 meters in length at most.

OK we will approach the University and hopefully get the extension cord approved with thermo cube and c9 lighting [there are no outlets outside the building built in the 1960's] Im not sure that would fly, but we will try; we can also try something exothermic like a covered compost pile next to the palm and then encose the system to give off exothermic heat from bacteria and fungal fermentation; that might be enough

I would love that, I do wonder when it might consider flowering. I know some coconuts take longer than others. I think this one will be 3 years old in October.

It was a while back, but mine was bought from “waytogopalms” here in SoCal. He scooped up a bunch of the Sparkman ones for resale. It was a while ago, but worth checking.

@Chester B I live near Meyerland. Winter temps are similar to Sugar Land, sometimes a little warmer, usually not as warm as Hobby. Yours definitely looks like a B x PJS to me, very nice. The two beside the (BxJ) x P have prominent spines on the petiole which I believe is atypical for B x P crosses.

Hi there, When going to the local DIY home center I ALWAYS start my journey through the palm and other plants section. I am usually doing it when in need to buy a tool or something else necessary for our house, so, I am not a weekly regular but go there from time to time. But today - I am sorry, I didn't take a pic - I came across some roughly two year old coconut palms sold for 9.800 Japanese Yen (60US$) , that is almost the double compared to three, four years ago and completely ridiculous if you know the places were to look for washed ashore seeds... Since my own company already throws germinated coconut seeds away due to lack of need - they have already asked me because they are aware of my hobby - I might consider starting a business over here....😂 One more thing. A couple of months ago some imported C. lutescens (Golden Canes) - in the meaning of shipped in from other parts of Okinawa - were sold for 8.000 Japanese Yen (50US$), a jaw dropping price if you know better - just to be replaced weeks later by local grown ones... ...almost men-high for 2.000 Japanese Yen (12US$). (I couldn't resist despite its commonness... A beautiful palm is a beautiful palm, period...) So, to keep it short, the pattern is so obvious that you just stay patient and wait for the right time or mind your own - alright, just my two cents - Lars

@necturus that palm looks wild, its great. What part of the city are you in? I've got a couple of B x PJS from Patric. They're at the size where they need to go in the ground. They have changed appearance as they've gotten larger. This one was very PJS looking but now is more Butia like.

Hi there, same over here. It is pitch dark outside at the moment but I got a similar monster in my backyard - and I LOVE it. Since I am situated closely to farms with livestock, my palms are often attacked by the local rhinoceros beetle (Taiwanese version) breeding on the farmer's grounds. While Cocos nucifera, Veitchias and Alexander palms take sometimes serious damage up to mortal level, the Bismarckias - I have got two in the ground - are probably way beyond their 'biting' capacity... I often see them attacked but they must have been really p.... off about the thickness of the leaves. 😅 @aztropic : You got something to compare, like a shovel or a ladder? You fella looks already huge - btw. I always like to follow your comments - so, I guess there is nothing that is going to stop it anyways...👍 All the best - Lars

If you plan to keep it potted , then a bit of shade will help , especially during the warmer months . Choose a light colored pot that is much larger than the one you have. Be very gentle when repotting , they don’t like their roots disturbed . Harry

Nice haul. My recent trip down to La Habra to see @DoomsDave gave me a boost . My buddy Kurt and I came home with the back of his SUV packed! Gaussia , Dypsis Cabadae , Ernie’s ( Dave is usually well stocked with Chamaedorea Ernesti Augusti ) , Ptychosperma , and Kurt got more than me! Nice feeling to adopt new plants for the garden . We were going to place a combined order with Floribunda , but Kurt wanted some larger stuff and he was wanting to meet Dave. I am waiting for cooler temps to plant but the shade lovers will be going in the ground soon. I need to get some Ernie’s in the ground as “ in betweenie “ palms!😄Happy gardening for @happypalms ! Mine is growing. I have one next to my bed, and others growing in my living room. I realize I have a monster right next to my bed. Just imagine if it were a *Borassus* or a *Jubaea*.

I don't think there are any easy solar ways besides a solar generator which would need to be weather protected and a pretty large solar panel as you need 120 watts or so of total heat and a runtime of 8 hours or more. When you most need it the solar panel would be iced or not have sun.

It’s a very good starting price, sir. Sir, I would pay 500. This palm is unique; it has a look reminiscent of *Phoenix rupicola*. Whoever buys it will be a serious collector.

Archie’s are a bit sensitive for sure , I have had success with moving volunteer seedlings . Maybe it is easier in a garden where the soil is amended and softer. My friend Kurt does it with A Purpurae and A. Maxima from his mature palms . In fact he gave me some for my garden and they are trucking right along. If you just treat them like other palms , they will not make it . That’s my experience , here in a temperate environment. Even potted ones must be treated kindly when planting out or they will sulk. My thoughts are similar to @happypalms - Some kind of Chrysalidocarpus/Dypsis. Based on the ones I've gotten from you, Chrysalidocarpus plumosas or Chrysalidocarpus onilahensis maybe?

You may notice the year you get fruit it’s dry around flowering. Anthracnose fungus is the culprit, when they are flowering any amount of rainfall triggers this on the flowers. The usual fungicide treatments work well. But there’s nothing better than an organic mango. And if you give that mango to wife she won’t be so chainsaw happy to cut down your tree. I get the same with my tree, and i finally get fruit only to have the fruit bats get them. 30 year old mango tree and only ever gotten 7 mangoes to eat over all those years!

Bit of a push on the seedlings mid winter. But I had the chance to pick 50 Calyptrocalyx pollyphylus, at a very reasonable price for 75mm tube stock so I grabbed them. I have a few porphyllus in trays in the greenhouse already doing well over winter, so this batch should be ok. And while I was ordering a few palms I grabbed a few cordylines rubra and kaui beauty, along with some plumeria cuttings for the garden.

You just don’t know until you try, I have not had much experience with decipiens as transplanted seedlings, but I do know every time I dig out a little archontophoenix in a creek bed upon a visit to their habitat, none have lived so I now don’t bother with seedlings just pick up a few seeds. But we can’t be told until we try it ourselves, but they were right 99 percent of the time, it won’t live story🤣 Richard
