Konstantinos I believe you, maybe it depends on the vintages?

I don't like the look of large Livistona chinensis around here, they look great when small and in the shade. They aren't the most common palm in Houston, but I do see them often. There are a few in my neighborhood, but they always take some level of frond damage. We had a low of 23F last year and there was some bronzing and when we were closer to 20F most of the fronds were heavily burnt. So they have to regrow a good portion of the fronds each year, but when you see them from more tropical areas with a substantial crown they look much better. I generally see them with multiple trunks, so I'm assuming they were the typical ones you see in the house plant section. I only know of one nursery around here that sells them and they do sell single trunk, so I bought a couple.

Strange, because they germinate naturally below mother plant in my garden! I will be back to post pictures.

Konstantinos last year (I don't know if you remember) you sent me the seeds, not even 1 germinated, while I had seeds from Australia from a dear friend (who wishes to remain anonymous) (not happypalms, who also sent me many seeds) they all germinated

I have both cunninghamiana and alexandrae shooting new bronze fronds but seems to only happen in winter.

I am utterly surprised. I have a female specimen growing adjacently to two male ones and it is constantly fully loaded with pollinated fruits.

Will have to look at those, I have seen Juania, Rhopalostylis and Parajubaea as well as Cocoid hybrids in littoral/perfect urban locations (and have pondered Ceroxylon), but that is a new species to me.

24.0C was the average high for July, which is running >5.0 C above the norm. We accumulated 270.5 base 10C GDDs when the average is close to 160. Precipitation was hardly over 1mm, so it looks like the year will likely qualify as Csb, warm-summer med, unless August is miraculously >22 C and/or gets loads of rain (unlikely). January was very rainy this year so I think this will be a Csb year.

Makes me think parts of the area could support some highland chrysalidocarpus, and other cooler growing but daytime warmth tolerant palms. Dicipiens and baronii come to mind, but there are many others, smaller ones for fitting in sheltered spots from winter and wind.

Been having intermittent trouble with logging on . Both my iPad and my iPhone are having this problem . This morning it was real bad but seemed to get better later on. Over the weekend , same experience , intermittent trouble loading up. Harry

Iam quite confident they were purchased as variegated merriillii seeds. They are a wanted palm in Australia and iam very surprised at how cool tolerant they are. Richard

I don't know you, buddy, and: Nice to meet you! The Arenga engleri is doing great here. I have four in the garden. I also have Arenga micrantha, and that's good here too. They get filtered sunlight from other taller palm trees.

It’s looking quite good so far, if these varieties haven’t been cooked by the cold temperatures by now, then they are standing a fair chance of making it through winter. This is there first winter and a lot of the larger varieties have been purchased from the tropics. So there foliage is taking it quite well, considering it’s tropical growth. One thing I can’t work out is why the mattenensis havent been cooked by the cold yet. They are just sitting outside with the rest of the seedlings, no hothouse. Here’s a nice juvenile in the ground, dappled light is what it receives. And it seems quite happy!

They are looking pretty good so far, the larger plump ones appear to be pollinated. Time will tell, but if they don’t size up that will be a fair indicator that they’re not pollinated. And if they are you will know the difference by looking at them . Or just simply cut one in half, ut then you lose a seed and they are already hard to get good seeds.

You think of New Zealand and palms are not the first thing you think of. It certainly would have its challenges that for sure gor a palm growing. I just don’t think it’s the climate iam after for the tropical palms I grow and even then I have trouble with tropicals in my subtropical climate. Certainly there are palms I won’t even attempt to grow, but I will give most a try. Good on you for taking the plunge and giving it a go, palm availability would be you’re biggest concern, you just can’t get the varietys to try. But keep on trying I say!

And iam sure that list of what you can’t grow is rather long, how long you ask, well how long is a piece of string?
