What is your current yard temperature?

941mb Hurricane formation off Mexico, around the 20th?? Reality : Ahhh yes, ...I see we're starting the " Fantasy Canes " Dumpster runs early this year??.. Make believe reality reasoning attempt: = = but, but, who thought it would be 100+ ..for days.. in March.. < Squints and crosses his fingers while whispering > ..I wish it were true, i wish it were true.. 😂 🙃 78F, breezy, and cloudy at 11:19PM.. Chance of seeing " slightly more than occasional spit " increased ..by a couple hairs.. for the valley for tomorrow evening.

  5. Full sun? I'm afraid that's a bad idea. Even if it survives it will look crap in the summer..

Yay! A New Order From Floribunda Has Arrived!

Most of my landscape is shaded of partially shaded so I’ve not had any difficulties with acclimating palms from Floribunda. I just plant them and watch them grow. Two of my Ceroxylon came from a now defunct nursery in Southen CA (DR Palms and Plumeria) years ago. The Ceroxylon amazonicum was an eBay purchase about four years ago.
  7. Even before we opened at 9am, the garden was buzzing with activity. (9 photos) When we finally opened, some familiar faces showed up to fill their wagons with new plants. Dr. Rossi leads the Tour de Freeze, showcasing the palms that performed best and worst during the cold outbreak that dropped the garden to 21.5F. You can't say the Central Florida folks aren't adventurous, with Rhopalostylus planted. The baureri didn't handle the event as well as cheesemanii. A special thanks to @Jeff Searle, @Fishinsteeg234, @howfam, @STLOUISPALMGUY, @CodyM, Clay Porch and Steve Farnsworth for an excellent selection at the sale. Also a special thanks to @PalmJuan, @ChristianStAug, @RiverCityRichard, @flplantguy, @Jblume, @Kekoanui, and all of our new and current members for making the event a success.

What direction is this wall? Doesn’t look bad, honestly similar to how they look in SD.

I don’t think Ive seen the Corona one, the palm desert one was fruiting. I think palm desert is around the Coachella valley. Corona is similar to my climate. We’re almost the same distance from the coast.

    Remarkable palms of Tampa Bay

Knowing that area in the general sense, that's pretty crazy ..in a good way, lol. Would never think of installing something like Veitchia that far east. Don't know if they're still there / their nursery is still open but, remember going to Crowley's right after the 2010 freeze and seeing progressively worse damage the closer you got to the nursery out in Myakka.. They experienced some damage as well, but remember barely seeing any by the next time i picked up some stuff from them later that summer. Having all the Oak canopy surrounding their property definitely seems to help them out there.
  11. My two love being baked in the south Florida heat, rain, and humidity. I’m not sure you’ll have success as an indoor plant. Good luck though, it’s a very beautiful palm.

Yeah it was kinda crazy, pretty much nothing in the area got damaged this past freeze (besides the rural areas). Even out at the far East edge of Lakewood Ranch, there was some new neighborhoods where they installed brand new veitchias and other cold sensitive stuff and they were all okay.
  13. I have what I believe are 4 different Corypha I’ve planted in my yard.. I need help positively identifying the 4th, that I believe is Corypha Taliera. It’s just very hard finding good information on young Taliera, so that’s why I am posting this now. We just had a freeze in South Florida a few months ago so everything is still recovering, but they are all pushing new fronds as we speak. I’m pretty positive I have planted 2 Corypha Umbraculifera, 2 Lecomtei, and 4 Utan throughout the yard, good information online to support this as well. I also believe I have 3 Taliera planted as well, but due to a lack of juvenile pictures online I can’t be sure. Please help me identify this last palm that my best guess could be a Corypha Taliera… They all have there distinctive features but this is the only one with very armed palm leafs, not just the petioles. I openly admit I’m an amateur in the palm world and I have fallen down the rabbit hole trying to collect all of the Corypha species. This last palm could be something else all together but based off of what I’ve been able to find, a Taliera is my best guess. Thank you for any insight you can provide, and I’ve included pictures as well. The first three are Umbraculifera, next four are Lecomtei, next two are Utan, and the last six are what I think might be Taliera. Any specific questions or a want of pictures of specific areas, don’t hesitate to ask. Thanks for your help!

    Hybridizing

do you have them both in different sexes? hybridizing phoenix palms is so easy it happens by accident. get pollen from one species and dust it over the female flowers of the other species. then be patient, and when you get seeds and sprout the seedlings eventually it becomes obvious which ones are hybrid and which aren’t. I haven’t done this myself just to clarify, but I do have 2 hybrid phoenix seedlings in my possession that if you didn’t guess i literally got from random phoenix trees around my area. I have a dactylifera x roebelinii and sylvestris x roebelinii, and both have been comparatively slower to their pure counterparts but they’re morphologically unique which is cool.

That's a really good spot. That's gotta be one of the warmer areas in Lakewood Ranch, but even besides the palms and other tropicals you can grow there, that's such a convenient location to get anywhere in the area. One thing I really noticed with this last freeze is how much heat all the new development in that area holds in now. That'll definitely work in your favor too, even though like you said, HOAs suck 😂
  16. Hello, I use a thick layer of mulch in my winter boxes and after a winter, when I take the mulch away, it's always gets mixed with soil, so it becomes half mulch/half soil. Can I reuse this mix next winter? Or it's bad that there's a lot of soil mixed now? As I understand, the main problem with having soil in the mix is that it doesn't let air through as well as mulch? Should I perhaps just mix this mix with new mulch to reduce the percent of soil in the mix and improve aeration? Kind regards, Pavel

Yay! A New Order From Floribunda Has Arrived!

Through all your orders through FB, you haven't experienced any acclimation issues ? I did my first FB order this year & i'm so anxious to get the palms in the ground.. I have had them since april 16 & been in the shade potted up. I just hate keeping palms in pots !! Also where did you buy your Ceroxylons ? been hunting for one for awhile now.

    Thank you kind sir.
  21. There is a good chance that the one I collected died ( I’m starting to recall being numbed that it died) and this is the one I got from Jastin. Still I’m pretty sure it’s not baccariana though. It’s gets the crap kicked out of it by basketballs and wiggle balls.
  22. I hate to say it, but as much as I understand wanting one, this seems like it's probably not a good idea. These are very sensitive palms. I don't see them growing well in such conditions. @sonoranfans , thoughts? Also, how are you acquiring these OP?

    Welcome to West Central Florida!
  24. Not really. Rain water arrives with some dissolved nitrogen and a slightly acidic pH. Check the pH of the water coming out of your hose. There's a good chance that it is slightly alkaline, especially if you're on a municipal water system.

  26. Man I’m awful at IDing pritchardia but yours looks different than hillebrandii too. Very strong chance I’m wrong though.
  27. My garden received a light rain totaling ~0.20in over 2 days. Some is better than none, but we could sure use a good rainy season to get everything in recovery mode and fill up the wetlands.
