SUPER IMPORTANT - MAJOR IMPROVEMENTS TO PALMTALK
Matt in OC replied to PALM MOD's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
Thanks for all your hard work on this, mods! Maybe it's just me, but the "Go to first unread post" link of a topic takes me to posts I've already seen of the topic. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but it would be amazing if that worked well. -
Caryota ochlandra- Chinese Fishtail Palm
Hillizard replied to Eric in Orlando's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
Newest leaf on my very, very slow growing Caryota. It was sold as C. ochlandra from a SoCal grower (though not Phil at JM), but I have my doubts. Will have to wait a few more years to see what develops.- 24 replies

I ordered a couple extra per interest. May go quick. These 3's are overgrown could be 7's. 120.00 for the JUBAUITA and 95.00 for the Trachycarpus both are rare and hard to find in this size. Willing to ship to most US states. The Butia x Jubaea (sometimes called "Jubutia") is a highly prized hybrid palm that crosses Butia odorata (Pindo Palm) with Jubaea chilensis (Chilean Wine Palm), combining the extreme cold hardiness of both parents. It features a massive, thick trunk and faster growth (hybrid vigor) than either parent, making it ideal for temperate climates, with hardiness often reaching down to \(10^{\circ }F\) Considered by Gibbons and Spanner to be the most elegant species of windmill palm, this Himalayan native will eventually reach 30' tall when very happy. Our offering is the Nepal Form of the species which has slightly smaller leaves and is far more cold hardy than normal. If you enjoy experimenting with new, possibly hardy palms, then this fast-growing windmill is a must.

A male Xylocopa varipuncta bee feeding on my backyard Desert Museum palo verde (Parkinsonia X ‘Desert Museum’). The male has no stinger and his two evolutionary drives are to feed and mate.

SUPER IMPORTANT - MAJOR IMPROVEMENTS TO PALMTALK

When they build that update, I hope they can create an encyclopedia about palm trees. It should be built with images and descriptions from each PalmTalk member, all compiled by a PalmTalk team of palm tree experts. The goal is to create a comprehensive encyclopedia where everyone can interact and view it through PalmTalk, ultimately leading to the publication of the "Book of Palm Trees"—the world's largest book on palm trees. This book should also include photos of germinated seeds of each variety, indicating whether germination is adjacent or remote. It would offer far greater knowledge than any other encyclopedia. Licuala Mapu: Female flowers are the longest. Male flowers are shorter and produce pollen. Female flowers receive the male flowers. -

Thanks @Darold Petty, that's what I've been looking for. I found it hard to track down this service at an affordable price. I'll give them a shot. -

How to kill a palm to more easily edit it
sonoranfans replied to DoomsDave's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
LOL I am currently watching a neighbor who had a broken irrigation system in sand. 4 royals are wasteing away even with our (NOT THIS YEARS) rains. They shrivel up from the grow point down. It takes a few years for them to come down. If you think aobut it and use Google AI's estimate of 63-64% water from an oil palm, it means 2/3rds of the weight can be lost in dessication. And it occurs from the top down so the tendency to topple shrinks with dessication/time. Ive also seen abandoned field nurseries where some royals waste away. The guy up the street has 3of 4 where the crownshafts are gone and the trunk is continuing to dry up and dissappear top down. I walk my dog by there everyday. As the thing dries out and loses height there will be less of a damage risk dropping it. I have thought about this a lot as I do have a fat royal with 25' of clear trunk. Its not a coke bottle so much. I'd say 28 in ch minimum trunk diameter with a max probably 5" more than that. A simple calculation on water weight is using water alone based on 64lb ft3 says that tree is 8000 lbs of water in the trunk with one third of that wood which is not counted in the weight. I would estimate 10,000 lbs for the trunk overall if wood is 0.8 the density of water and 33% the volume of the trunk. Who wants to chop down such a tree and then have to carry those 5 tons of wet trunk away? It could easily be 1/3rd of that weight and if you let it dry out and crumble you have mulch you can spread, and not have to carry away at all. Im still thinking about it for the day if it comes in my lifetime.
