A toasty Monday underway in the low desert.. 107 when i took the screen shot a few mins. ago, now up to 109 ( at 1:45PM ).. We'll see if we notch ..or eek past.. the 110F mark. Regardless, depending on your neighborhood, it might be in the mid -100s, or already topping 110 / 110+ right now. Always a bit surprised by this part of Chandler / Sun Lakes part of town.. Infested with neighborhood Golf Courses yet, as you can see, some of the hotter readings on the hotter days occur down there.. ..Not that it is exactly cool outside those areas.. Anyhow... Luckily, this looks like the hottest day of this particular warm up as temps start the forecasted downward slide to a more " normal May heat " level tomorrow.. Further abroad? Nice, late spring surge / flirty tease of monsoon -esque moisture driving some storm development over the Sierra Madre Occidental on the Satellite loop today.. With just a little of that moisture trickling into the mountains down around the borderlands. ...where they always get the fun stuff, first, lol. Closer inspection reveals maybe a brief, dry storm or two could be trying to form over the Santa Rita, Huachuca, and maybe the Chiricauhua mountains.. with a few weak build ups trying to bubble up as far north as the Sups < local nick name for the Superstition Mtns > just east of the valley.. If we're lucky, maybe a little of that southern moisture arrives overhead ..in the form of scattered, " here and there " clouds... by sunset.. Could see a slight uptick in buildups / storm or two more down across the borderlands tomorrow, otherwise, ..hot n' sunny locally ..though it should be a few degs cooler than today, ..w/ maybe a few more clouds around to make the sky a bit more interesting.. Gotta share / spread the fun stuff around a bit, ya know.. -

Maybe one day we could do a Quartzsite half way meet. I would do two but the problem I have with palms is just two in the same area would look silly by themselves so they would need two more next to those. lol. Plus you would return home with some date palm shoots. CA has a import ban on date palms coming in but not gong out. - Today

110 F temperatures today... Looks like the tree closed up shop early to reduce moisture loss.🤷♂️ aztropic Mesa, Arizona -

Does anyone have seeds for the trunkless form? I’m in the Ohio snowbelt but our soil/under the snow temps are closer to zone 8 temps than to zone 6. I think the trunkless variety would do well buried under that snow. It barely gets below freezing under all of our snow. -
Kari has great flavor when ripe, might be one of my favorite tropical flavors - not overly sweet like abiu, mango, papaya and refreshing. But there is a potassium/kidney concern, so I generally peel mine and hope that that helps some.

Where there's a will, there's a way. Home depot rents 32 foot tall ladders for $50. I rented the ladder, edited my Bismarck, and had the ladder checked back in at 3 hours time. Planning out the job ahead really makes things go smoothly.👍 aztropic Mesa, Arizona -
That looks like cold damage. Not much different than some of mine. If you haven't had spear pull by now (judging by your location) I'm guessing you probably won't have. Mine that spear pulled are already pushing out new growth.

Silas_Sancona replied to Brad52's topic in TROPICAL LOOKING PLANTS - Other Than Palms
Can't tell you which one he has ( ..may be growing a couple different ones honestly ) but my neighbor w/ the fruit forests has been growing Star Fruit here in the desert w/ out issue ..under high canopy of course, for years.. Know of a couple people who grow them in tubs in Tucson as well. Interesting tree, but have never been a huge fan of the fruit myself. -

You could probably start with a 'potted' 15 or 25 gallon tree and have great success with it as the roots wouldn't be disturbed for the transplant. Readily available in those smaller sizes and reasonably priced. I sell 15 gallon plants that are 10 years old already for $250... aztropic Mesa, Arizona -
SUPER IMPORTANT - MAJOR IMPROVEMENTS TO PALMTALK

Long time wish: Dedicated spot, separate from the main palm section, for pest /disease ID and help /advise.. Could add it in below the " Palms in pots " section, or make it it's own stand alone spot.. Keep simple and all together, or divide into 2 simple sections: 1 for Palms and Cycads, 2nd.. For everything else non- Palm and Cycad.. ....Aand dark mode ..the option to go darker at least.. -

Your trip follows a lot of the places we saw on the IPS biennial earlier this year. You can see the itinerary here https://ips13.wildapricot.org/2026-biennial If you are going to southern Thailand I would highly recommend visiting Khao Sok National Park. The views are spectacular. If you look closely you can see Maxburretia growing right along the cliff sides and Arenga westerhoutii in a few places. In Hanoi, the Temple of Literature was really interesting and I would recommend grabbing a coffee along on the train street.

I had to pull mine out and wish that I had paid more attention to it as it was under watered and I killed it. So much effort and work to relocate just for me to kill it. For some reason I can grow Phoenix Dactylifera like its no ones business but any other type are really sensitive in my climate. Sick palm misses a one or two waterings and that's that. Looking good wish I had one. -
I’m not sure how cold tolerant they are but I have seen zones 9 to 11 listed who knows. I’m keeping my starfruit tree under 2 m and I think it’s a nice tropical form and it’s given me more fruit than the fruit flies and I can keep up with and two crops a year at least.

Here’s one we havent seen for a while, dypsis lutescens
Josue Diaz replied to happypalms's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
I've tries this palm multiple times, in the most sheltered spots in my yard, but they simply don't live long here. By long, I mean, they don't survive a single winter. Our winters in Fresno have not dropped below 34F in approximately 10 years, which in theory would be within lutescens' tolerance range. We have a prolonged, cool/wet period from Nov through Feb each year with lows in the mid 30s to mid 40s, and highs in the 50s and 60s. No frost some years, but even without frost, these begin to slowly die. Whatever fungal issues arise from the prolonged cool/wet conditions, they're accelerated by warm temps in April, and whatever canes may look ok/decent by then, inevitably rot with the arrival of warm weather. Just a short drive south, over Tejon Pass and into the Los Angeles basin, winters are dry and sunny so this palm does great with very little care. -

Much MUCH too tall for me to behead it. about 25 feet 8.3 M of trunk plus crownshaft. No way to get up there.
