    Kentia dying

For an indoor plant it looks way to wet and boggy looking, but it definitely has problems.

  9. I’m cooked. Loosing hope. Dropped a bunch of fronds yesterday and still have green(ish) crowns but got zero growth. Spears don’t pull and no collapse but nearly no color and the spears that were growing haven’t opened or moved an inch. Royals, adonidia’s, or areca’s. Bananas pushed out about 1ft, areca’s down low pushed, hibiscus starting to push, arguable aboricola. Looks like a wasteland here. Going to wait till the weekend to start cutting. the Christmas while huge for my area aren’t a shock. I expected the royals to do better. Areca’s not shocked but I may lose the ones with 10ft of trunk. Bismarck took a shot too. Several bleached fronds and about a half dozen “broken” by the trunk hanging down.

Paul, I posted a wanted ad for this plant on this forum, and unwittingly had a unfortunate experience of someone replying from supposedly Arizona. The end game was that he finally refund my money after some time, and and a lot of trouble, I was lucky. The last time I saw this plant for sale was moons ago in Lafayette, CA and I didn't buy any. I did track down the person and he has sold his property. Perhaps Florabunda will get these going. I am writing this as a warning to be cautious about procuring this plant in USA. There is a another member from our group in Contra Costa that has one sex, but I spoke to him, and it has never flowered. Last year, we did tour in South Bay, and he had a few plants, but perhaps has seeds. Contact me and I will give you his name. I have been meaning to follow up, but have been busy. Hoping I might get to Australia in future and bring back some seeds, just a dream to get to Lord Howe Island and hike. Let me know if you do find this plant, as I would like to obtain one as well. I think Jason DeWees in the your neck of woods advertised a wanted ad, and don't know if he found one or not. Regards, Cecile
  11. Another Cymbidium hybrid in bloom. I don't recall the name of this one.

    To hybridize or not

Just to clarify, the female is the rather commonly grown Ravenea glauca. The uncommon plants is the male, Ravenea julietiae. I have seedlings of Ravenea glauca from past years because I have both male and female of that species. Today I collected a little pollen from the Ravenea julietiae and tried dusting some flowers on the Ravenea glauca female. It won't develop full fruits with seeds unless the flowers are successfully pollinated in my experience. So I will collect more pollen and try dusting again over the next few days. We will see if the glauca develops fruit.

The great Palm weevil temp experiment

Since every living thing has something that might parasitize it, there are likely a few out there. Issue is, it takes time conducting enough research to be sure any such organism released to target them only targets SAPW and not other beetles ..or other insects in general. Worst outcome in such situations is releasing something into a new environment that ends up causing bigger issues later.
  14. There needs to be found a natural enemy like the various parasites that afflict other monster bugs, including Eugenia psyllid, and wooly whitefly.

Pindo, Mule or Alfredii for front yard?

Coco Queen is about the same overall diameter as a Butia. Mine is a pretty fast grower in terms of height. Depending on what you want that could be good or bad. A Butia might be 1 foot per year, Coco Queen is maybe 2 or 3 feet per year...perhaps arohnd 2 feet? In that spot I wouldn't do a Royal or Alfredii. Royals = frond BOOM as others noted. Alfredii would look ok there but I think would be waaaay too big. 15 foot fronds are typical, and I think my largest is closer to 20 feet. I regret planting one ~12 feet from the house... I' go with a nice silver Butia, preferably one with twisty fronds.

    Bactris mexicana

Over the last few days the other seeds have started to pop already. I noticed that Bactris seeds germinate not from the 2 very noticeable "eyes" that are almost together, but from a smaller eye in the opposite side of where these are surrounded by fiber-like "hairs". As of now, 8 seeds have successfully germinated.

Possibly buried to deep and overwatered or he has fertilised it way to much.

    Wollemia nobilis

He was selling it in the USA as "Wollem Pine" which this other company had copy written. Some people make a business of copy writing everything they can then offer to sell it for a million dollars. This happened at Yosemite Natl Park Names like "Curry", Awanee and so on were copy written before the Curry Co. lost their contract. They sued and so the lodge isn't the Awanee Hotel anymore but now the Yosemite Grand Hotel" these b******s wanted some like $5 million for their copy written names. What a bunch of hooey. All their store items with the Awanee name from shot glasses, fleece jackets and blankets now go for $$$ on Ebay.

The best of luck to you with the new Coconut palm! I think you meant 3 feet in circumference as far as the trunk base is concerned, rather than diameter. It’s a very nice specimen.

I'm in northern California zone 10a. I'm trying to locate a plant. I was able to find one in a five gal for $235 but that was on my phone a few days ago and I can't remember the nursery but it was in the USA. California is pretty strict regarding out of state plants and San Marcos is no longer carrying them. Seed is available as it was found 31 years ago so there should be some. I'll as well check for seeds at some local botanical gardens . If you know a grower esp. if in California shoot me out a message.

    Trying coconuts again in Jacksonville!

The camera does not do justice of how huge the trunk is. But here is a big ol shovel
  25. I got a 15 gallon coconut tree and it has 10 fronds and a base about 3 feet or so in diameter, one picture is a size 13 croc next to it, I also elevated the bed, planted away from the huge 30 foot sable, and got a much healthier tree in general. When I ripped out the old coconut the roots had barely grown and it looked pretty sad. And I won’t rip off and old boots this time. I’m only living here 4 more years so my goal is for it to live 4 years. It’s about 11 feet tall.

  27. Today was the start of removing plants that were dead or so close they had little chance of recovering. Thus far, the attached sheet is where things stand. The plants marked in Dark Blue were removed today. The plants marked in light blue are others I anticipate removing at some point. There are enough plants in the garage to fill empty spaces (and then some), but I do plan on keeping a lot of the space open. My intent is to hold off until at least fall to start treating these as actual observations for the Cold Hardiness Observation Master Data because things will inevitably change. The Atlantic Tall is recovering about as quick as @pj_orlando_z9b's coconut. The Maypan is a little slower. The photo is of the Atlantic Tall from the ladder today. 20260302_TentativeGardenDamageReport.xlsx
