Trunking Cold Hardy Yucca?
redbeard917 replied to vlc's topic in TROPICAL LOOKING PLANTS - Other Than Palms
Great pics everyone. Plant Delights also has a bunch of hybrids they come out with, occasionally adding new ones. I got one from them called Lone Star which did well and eventually branched, but I don't have a pic because a few years later the big trunk split and died. I wouldn't say it got to a size describable as a tree, but it got maybe 5' tall and forked halfway up. I could send you a pup if you want. -
A friend visited the Bahamas and sent a picture of this unusual fruiting tree. I don't really have any info except a description of the inside of the fruit, if that would help.

Here's mine. Needle looks great. Little frost cloth and heat cable at the base. Next my Bulgaria x Nanital. Took a bit of damage but overall looks good. It had frost cloth, heat cable and mini lights on a thermocube. Onto my Louisiana, looks fantastic honestly. Same treatment as the needle. Last is my McCurtain , looks as one would expect. Same protection as the needle and Louisiana. Our winter was relatively mild. ( I had a zone 7winter in zone 6) But I feel that even though the needle and McCurtain should be fine. If I protect they will look nice not just survive Anyways

Cycad cones and flushes
Tracy replied to Urban Rainforest's topic in TROPICAL LOOKING PLANTS - Other Than Palms
Yes, good eye. Another one I acquired from George Sparkman. He did let me know that they sometimes completely defoliate between flushes, but this is the first year it did so completely in the roughly decade I have been its steward. -
Has anyone seen anything like this before? I can’t help but wonder which Rhopalostylis variety it might be. My first thought was Chatham Islands, but I’m starting to doubt that. It could possibly be a Great Barrier Island form instead. Or even a naturally occurring hybrid with archontophoenix cunninghamiana? It’s surrounded by them.. Anyway what caught my attention is the very open crown and the extremely dark crownshaft color. I was also looking through some older Rhopalostylis photos and I think Geoff Stein used to have a few similar plants in cultivation. Curious to hear what others think on the variety — what are your bets?

This is DrZnaturally; we shall see how the palm does ,as soon as we prepare to open it up around Spring equinox 2026; will it have survived all of the harsh polar vortexes thrusted upon the northEast this winter 2025 into 2026?? stay turned to the grand unwrapping of the mummy wrapped palm tree which is a Connecticut champion https://oak.conncoll.edu/notabletrees/ViewTreeData.jsp?selected=226219 we will post a video- 2 replies

it’s scary when a palm that looks that healthy has a spear pull because to me it means you never know if your healthy looking ones are secretly struggling too

hopefully it will come back, today I decided to cut the trunks of the 3 of my potentially dead palms and found out they were all actually dead. Potted washingtonia, third in ground washingtonia, and spear pulled windmill all dead. Also had a sooty mold problem on a lot of my palms and decided to trim off all of the sago fronds. Really hoping my sagos come back, will be planting my windmill replacements. There were ants all under the soil of the third washingtonia that were working with the sooty mold bugs. Sagos were covered in mold too. Really hoping the sooty mold problem goes away and the rest of my palms including sagos have a smooth recovery.

Rather than be lazy and start a new ..and totally unnecessary.. thread about it, dug around and found my old discussion on the topic.. Regardless, Been awhile but, as mentioned yesterday in the " Current Temp. / WX " thread, here we go again with another significant, ongoing Marine Heatwave off CA ..And it's only March.. Looking at the maps since ..last summer.. knew things were getting rather warm again but did not realize just how warm they have been ..and are currently. With nothing but months of strengthening sun angle / a retreating polar Jet Stream, which in turn = less and less N. Pac. generated storminess rolling into the region, ....and the growing louder chatter about ..what could end up being.. a pretty significant ( ..and quick.. ) shift toward a legit, E. Pac. - centered Positive ENSO / El Nino cycle this year, ..an already interesting year could get down right ..weird. Even if the ENSO side of things doesn't pan out as some seem to think it might ATM, overall N. Pac. has been running hotter than normal for several years now, even if near shore waters right off CA have stayed cool to downright cold / below avrg. at times. What does it all mean as we head forward? ..Well, ..we'll just have to see. *** If you fish / Scuba Dive, i'm already hearing of rare / unusual game fish turning up off S.Cal ..and just off Monterrey. Warmer than current water temps only mean ..more sightings of... / encounters with... " Tropical " fish ..some of which have been observed in / near San Diego and L.A. at times during the " not as hot " years since 2018, or during the last major MHW event between 2014 and 16. *** No question, if you surf, you're probably quite happy w/ water temps. right now.. As mentioned in this IG post, 67F SST readings recorded right off La Jola a few days ago is more typical of mid - ....June, ...not the beginning of MARCH. Weather wise, esp. as we reach summer? ..one doesn't have to dig around much to get some ideas on what another episode of " Hot Water " could lead to ..not just locally either. Quick developing +ENSO conditions, + overall warming over the past several years factors thrown in and ..summer ahead could be something to watch closely. Regardless, there isn't an SST forecast out atm that isn't pretty attention getting, esp when you look at suggested +SST anomalies off CA ..and nearby Baja / in the Gulf of CA and nearby areas along the Pac. coast of MEX, ..as compared to how they are looking in the Caribbean / Gulf of Mexico over the next several months. While it isn't the most reliable of longer term WX modeling, and with the general knowledge that it is impossible to nail down a forecast several months away already in mind, as you can see ..and has been the case all winter.. CFS thoughts just crank up the heat as we head forward.. Apr May June July Aug Sept Oct Nov Basin - wide thoughts both for August, and November. Note that the overall N.Pac. stays warm. This may ..or may not.. factor into what happens next winter. More later....

Is there anything (relatively) nearby where a bird could have deposited it? Cool!

Jubaea x Yatay or Yatay x Jubaea
sonoranfans replied to 8B palms's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
no pics of this specific hybrid but the first species is the mother plant and the second is the pollen source. The mother seems to almost always have a heavier contribution to the hybrid. I would say the YxJ(more yatay) will be a smaller palm with more weeping in leaves than the JxY(more jubaea like). IF you search BxJ and JxB on this forum you can see how it works out for other butia species, I would expect more of the same.- 1 reply

The lovely lanonia dasyantha
realarch replied to happypalms's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
Glad to see this palm is so adaptable climate zone wise, in ground or as potted specimens. I’ve had some in pots for years and like most Licuala/Lanonia, don’t seem to mind being root bound and always look just ducky. There was a rumor going around, for the more mottled specimens, that one should never fertilize because it would diminish the characteristic. I lightly fertilize my potted Lanonia and can’t say if it made a difference or not. I’ll snap a photo or two and post. Tim -

Our bigger Chamaedorea elegans has been living on my 4th-floor balcony since March 2025. She just survived her first full winter outside in Arbon/Stachen! ❄️🛡️ While she shows some winter wear, the statics are undeniable: She is pushing a fresh, green spear right now! (See my close-up photo). 🌿🔥 Maintaining this indoor-palm outside for a whole year is a true testament to the unique microclimate of our fortress. The 4th-floor thermal statics are pulverizing the botanical limits! 🌬️💎

I treated it with peroxide this morning. I will buy a new bottle of copper fungicide though. I hadn't needed one in a few years. 😡

Well, over a month after our freeze event in Texas, one of my Sabal mexicanas spear pulled on me. Very frustrated with this one. I had sabal palmetto and birmingham of similar size when I lived in Oklahoma that survived multiple below 0F events with just frost cloth and tarps. They burned 100% more than once, but came back without pulling a spear. This time, we hit 20F with a little freezing rain. Now I am worried about losing one of my most expensive palm purchases. (Paid more for something slower growing and extremely well adapted to my climate) I have never had a Sabal of any kind spear pull, so that makes me nervous. On the other hand, the damaged spears were definitely pushing up for the last month before they came out. So maybe there is something healthy in there growing up. How worried should I be about this? To add to my concern, we are set to get several days straight of rain. Should I bother trying to keep rain out? Or is it likely to matter since the air and soil temps are pretty warm here already?
