Looks just like the C. Radicalis I have growing around my garden. Some have very relaxed leaflets , others vary a bit . All of mine end up as tree form. Harry This is more upright This pair has more of a relaxed leaflets habit Growing up through a neighboring Pritchardia These are all on the shady section of the garden . I also have some in full sun. Very cool hardy and sun tolerant .

It’s not valid. Kew lists it as a synonym of Sabal palmetto. I will say though that S ‘blackburniana’ I’ve seen appear larger and different to S palmetto. I suspect S blackburniana as described was found to be the same as S palmetto so it was synonym used, but since then the name has been erroneously applied to different plants. As above, Sabal are difficult to ID at this size. I’m far from able to provide a positive ID, but to me it looks like it might be one of the very large group ones like S uresana, domingensis, causiarum or maritima.

Harry I think the consensus is that this one is Ceroxylon ventricosum which is a little different to C amazonicum with its plumose fronds rather than arranged in a single plane. I will say I’ve always thought the Sullivan Ventura Ceroxylon could be C quindiuense - it just seems to have that slightly plumose look rather than very obviously plumose like C ventricosum I’ve seen.

@Brad52 which species is this one? It looks a bit like my Tiger Grass - Thysanolaena Maxima, but not quite the same big leaves. The leaves also seem bigger than my Textilis "Ladyfinger" aka "Richard Waldron."

Agree with C radicalis. Looks typical in every way to me including the inflorescence.

They are indeed a nice palm, iam quite surprised at how cool tolerant a lot of licualas are considering how tropical they look. If you had the choices to choose from and the space you would be surprised at how successful they would be. Licuala palms are quite obtainable in Australia with many varieties up for grabs! Richard

Try letting them dry out a little. They are quite tough, and if that fails get it in the ground, that’s the best way to grow a palm. My ones got planted at a young age. They are slow as seedlings but once established they move pretty good.

Unfortunately no, tube stock purchased, seeds of these are very rare in my area. Wallichiana I have 250 seeds in customs at the moment. I think they have a short shelf life and need to be sown as soon as possible after harvest. The iguanura Wallichiana will be the first lot of iguanura seeds I will try to germinate, that is providing I get them through customs.

Hi I just bought this beauty of a Butia in a pot that's way too small for it. It's an 11.5 gallon and I was thinking of potting up to a 20 or 25 gallon. We're in the mid 90s temperature wise for a while here in the Rogue Valley in Southern Oregon. I've never had a Butia and was wondering if there was anything I would know before getting started. I was going to plant it but I'm afraid out wet winters would end badly for it. At least with a pot I can pull it under the overhang. with some of the other palms. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

    Chamaedorea graminifolia?

I agree with radicalis, looks a lot like it, and surviving those temps unscathed probably rules out pretty much any other Chamaedorea than maybe microspadix??

A few more in the garden, they are very tough palms and easy to grow.

Seems valid to me. Some think its just a hardier form of Sabal domingensis though, so it really depends on how you feel about it. Which speaking of, this could also be Sabal domingensis.

Any updates? We're putting more palms in the ground this week (especially the "big boys"), and I kept going back and forth on the placement of my julietiae (from the Sparkman group). Despite trying it in several "prime" spots, it never looked quite right in any of the placements I was considering. Here was the original placement I was leaning towards (but am no longer doing)... Today I tried moving it to an equally prominent place next to the palapa. And I like this placement a lot better! It looks like a feather on a fancy lady's hat to me, and all but one of the fronds are already clearing the palapa top (ignore the lean... I'll fix that during planting)... Sadly, the updated placement does mean the poor palm will need to stay in its pot just a *little* longer... as we're making a rock "planter" on the left side of the palapa . At least I know what will go in that planter now! That spot has an ideal balance of sun/shade, and relatively good wind protection. So I'm ready to declare this the plant's new home (unless anyone sees an issue with it). Curious how are everyone else's R. julietiae are doing.

So the deed is done. It was almost like having to put down the family dog... I will probably wait a couple months before planting one, two, or possibly 3 smaller palms, I'm liking the flamethrower... They even left me a souvenir

I have a few papaya and some big colocasia (thai giant) in the black pots, so i could put them in the middle of the bananas or repot them into 5g buckets too. I'm trying to get them to set fruit this year, probably around early winter if things go well. They do seem to be sulking just a little bit but they probably aren't getting enough fertilizer atm either. Hey, I'm learning as i go. But they're getting pretty big, they're about belly button high or so. Def not as fast as the stories about "seed to fruiting in 9 months," but reasonably fast. The big colocasia (Thai Giant) don't care at all lol. But between fighting spider mites in the bedroom, trying to be a caregiver to my mom, taking care of Sancho, going through the household finances (yikes, that's a mess), running all of the errands, fighting disability, and taking care of myself (i def come last), it's a lot. I'll try to rearrange and whip up a few gallons of fertilized water and hopefully get some holes dug when it cools off Monday.

Uresana crossed my mind as well, due to the color. IN the first two pics and the last pic I immediately though uresana. But I have no confidence in ID'ing small sabals. It is surely not a palmetto though. I see plenty of palmettos here, NOPE.

In nurseries they bunch them so the pots arent exposed as much sun, and they do use shade cloth. Also they may use high drainage soil and water more frequently. As water evaporates, it cools the soil. Personally I have nothing in full sun that is in a pot here. 1/2 day sun at most for my most sun tolerant potted palms. Pots dry out fast, and when they do, they get hot fast as when the water is gone heating drives temps up quickly. The black pots are handy in winter though, keeps the soil warm longer into fall/winter, so you still get some root growth, an extended season. Its is not a dumb question, I have had to learn that myself years ago.

Mine has been in the ground since 2021. Got it from Steve Anderson (Florida, I believe). You can see the growth charts below with the y-axis in inches of top frond height. I believe the Miamiensis has gone unprotected the past 5 years and, as a result, it regularly experiences temps in the low teens. I haven't had any problems with it. Zero care.

For the first time in over 35 years mine froze last winter when it got down to 23 degrees here in St. Augustine. It surprised me because it killed them all the way to the ground. They are starting to sprout from the ground now fortunately but some of them were over 10' tall. It is so sad to see those full clumps of palms dead.
