    Dypsis ampasindavae

Dang! Looking good Dale, your patience is being rewarded. It’s definitely picking up speed. Prepare for some long fronds. Tim
  4. A battle won today ...A war to win tomorrow.. World's oldest oak secures protection from giant California development
  5. Appreciate that, I was thinking the gravel would be a good way to go since it's seemed to work on all my other plants out here that need well draining soil. Everything you say about it is definitely true. Every desert plant I had that didn't have gravel died off while all of the ones that did grew huge and healthy over the years. Just finished putting gravel in all of them now. Thanks again for reaffirming I thought I was going crazy. Also went and marked them all with a marker to watch the growth.
  6. Hello, I just bought a windmill palm from fast growing trees, a 3 gallon size. I open it to find the fronds all black torwards the center and some of them ripped completely off. Is this a disease or fungus or is it something else? It has a 1 year guarantee that requires me to pay for shipping, but if this is a sickness that the plant has and they sent to me anyways I’m going to be pretty upset. The spears are not pulling and the top of the largest one is brown. I’m going to hit it with fungicide. I’d like to know what it is sooner than later so I can send them an inquiry. Thanks

  8. There is still plenty of time to RSVP for the Summer Meeting. All are welcome to attend. RSVP to the email address above. An email will go out next week to those who have already sent an RSVP that will give the address for the meeting. We look forward to seeing some new faces and some perennial all-stars at the meeting!

If you remember which thread they were on, we can link them here as well.
  10. The rain measurements in the yard thus far are between 1.5" and 1.75" for the month. Usually, the second half of the month brings the bulk of the rain, but only time will tell if that holds true this year.

    Northwest Florida Happenings

Congratulations on your new digs. Looking forward to watching your progress over time.
  12. SubTropicRay

For some, Florida drought is getting very "extreme"

  13. Urban Rainforest

    Cycad cones and flushes

Tri standard leaf form. Very recurved though.
  14. Urban Rainforest

    Cycad cones and flushes

I have a couple Trispinosus throwing as well. This one is very recurved and is the Thresher shark var. Any of you fishermen out there will recognize the thresher shark leaflets.
  15. Urban Rainforest

    Cycad cones and flushes

Nice looking plant dale! Recurved leaves are always a bonus. I really like the ones that make a full circle at the end of the leaf!

Planted my p. Reclinata x canariensis

Harry is right. You need to clear at least a 3 foot ring of grass and then use a shredded hardwood mulch. It will break down quickly and add nutrients and structure to the soil. Remulch when it breaks down to less than an inch. I never plant anything directly into a lawn.

    Cycad cones and flushes

@Urban Rainforest here’s my “Special” leaf form I’ve posted about previously hardening off. It does look like it’s recurling near the end but other than that….no difference than others I’ve seen. I’m sure it will change looks in maturity. -dale
  18. Urban Rainforest

    Cycad cones and flushes

This one is just a basic very small but interesting leaf form. I will post my other leaf forms once they flush.
  19. Pdmesa

Butia x Jubaea 3g and Trachycarpus Martianus 3g

There is 1 jubauita left. The Trachy is The "Nepal" form and recognized as more cold-hardy, sometimes tolerating temperatures near 10°F to 14°F thank you
  20. Urban Rainforest

    Cycad cones and flushes

My second favorite leaf form is the Dwarf Horridus. You cant beat a good Dwarf!
  21. Urban Rainforest

    Cycad cones and flushes

This plant I posted last year and Tracy dubbed it twisted sister🤣This is hands down my favorite leaf form! It has very wide 3 dimensional leaflets similar to true blue Arenarius. E. Horridus var. Twisted Sister🤣
  22. Billeb

    Cycad cones and flushes

Agreed Tracy. As per that previous thread and documents you noted, these two are in different Clades (C6 & C7) but apparently still successfully cross. Here’s the tag from Kevin. I would assume his ID’s are correct??!?! -dale
  23. Urban Rainforest

    Cycad cones and flushes

While walking around looking at my several Horridus that are flushing the other day I noticed that I have 7 distinct leaf forms. How many are there? Here is one I have had for a very long time and started from a pup. I call it the OG because it was a form you used to see alot when I first got into Cycads over 30 years ago. Interestingly I dont see it around much anymore but I’m sure they are out there. Notice the narrow tubular leaflets.

    Phoenix dactylifera

Yeah, right, canariensis is no problem in a cold and moist environment; mine is doing well for over twenty years! But I just like the very upright silhouette and the very stiff blue/grey leaves of dactylifera iberica in comparison with the much more elegant bending leaves of the canariensis! I finally decided to give up on the dactylifera's.😭
  25. @Jim in Los Altos you’ve inspired me to experiment with some of those species in you OP again. (Palm Talk system about be updated.)
  26. TropicsEnjoyer

    Phoenix dactylifera

I understand your frustration but I would not give up hope. And likewise even if you can’t grow dactylifera there are other phoenix species such as canariensis that would probably do better, which you already have. The dacty will never truly die if it keeps pupping. keep that in mind
  27. Harry’s Palms

Planted my p. Reclinata x canariensis

Looks great! I would amend with garden soil at least once a year . Keep a circle around it at least as big as you have and top with wood chips . Over time , as the wood chips decompose, it will keep the soil healthy and help the clay soil . I do this annually here and it makes a difference in moisture retention and absorption. Harry
