Identify my late grandpas palm
HouseMouse replied to HouseMouse's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
Close but not quite. It’s more of a fluffy white fibers than that you can quite easily pluck out, maybe it’s similar? I did finally get pictures to upload 😊 -

Not Palms But… Passiflora Edulis Survives One of The Worst Winters In Washington, DC In 40 Years (2025-2026)
TropicsEnjoyer replied to jwf1983's topic in TROPICAL LOOKING PLANTS - Other Than Palms
You are very lucky. I live in 9b florida and my edulis with like a 2inch diameter trunk got melted the winter last winter. Although it didn’t instantly die, most of the stems froze off and it spent half the year sulking with a bit of new growth but eventually the trunk rotted. I was lucky enough to have taken cuttings so it lives on by clone. It was planted against a stone retaining wall but I assume that it’s lower elevation relative to the rest of my yard made it suffer the harsher cold and frost. I also lost a huge passiflora alato-caerulea, I have one that survived because I put a shirt at the base of the trunk, not even on purpose it was to protect a different plant. That one is only propagated by cutting so I will definitely make a bunch of cuttings of that one for good measure. No fruit but the flower scent is something you can’t miss. To be fair I had lows in the mid 20s and for a mostly exposed vine that’s a death sentence. If you had bushes, grass and concrete as insulators even if they only helped by a few degrees that makes all the difference. I might not get any fruit this year from my edulis vine to be honest, but I’ll probably replant it next week or so either way, they grow really fast and I can at least propagate it a bit. - Today

Chrysalidocarpus lutescens definitely looks better when they thinned out and get a clean up. Is seven feet the final height or will it continue to get taller with more age?

The Vietnamese variety looks a lot better the the thai variety, nice palm.

Pritchardia from Hawaii to Australia
happypalms replied to CLINODAVE's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
If it’s on the Bicon list in Australia then a person in Australia can legally import the seeds. If it’s not on the Bicon list most likely due to CITES then it’s a no go, some seeds my not be on CITES but are not on the Bicon most likely due to weed potential or some other obscure reason! So if it’s on the list in Australia you can import them.- 1 reply

They lay eggs in mulch and plant litter and our forests are full of that so I don't see anything but a biological controlling insect or disease. -

Why are sabals not popular in California
mnorell replied to SCVpalmenthusiast's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
It's not like you can't find them in SoCal if you look in the right places...Palm Plantation in Riverside currently (price-list updated Feb 2026) shows availability on S. minor, S. palmetto, S. 'Riverside' S. uresana. Fairview Nursery (I think in Vista, owned by "Josh O" on this forum) shows availability (not sure how current on the website) on S. etonia, S. palmetto 'Lisa,' S. pumos, S. uresana. Usually Phil Bergman (Jungle Music, Encinitas) has a selection of various Sabal species for sale as well. There are some other sources mostly run by folks on this forum who may also have them. You should also check mail-order sources like Etsy, eBay, and Plant Delights. Sabal King of Texas ("Sabal King" on this forum, he also sells on Etsy "SabalKingofTexas") specializes in mail-order Sabal species and has gobs and gobs of unusual Sabal palms available on his Etsy store right now. Good luck in your searching! -
Cycad cones and flushes
Tracy replied to Urban Rainforest's topic in TROPICAL LOOKING PLANTS - Other Than Palms
The offset on the main caudices is flushing. It is like a wort on the otherwise perfectly symmetrical main plant. Perhaps I should see it ss a beauty mark instead? A chunky monkey Encephalartos longifolius male. -
Why are sabals not popular in California
SCVpalmenthusiast replied to SCVpalmenthusiast's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
But it makes sense in your case, a blizzard killed the palms. Therefore, they’re not viable to sell. In California, palms are super popular and most importantly they survive. Slow growth is not a bad thing. Plenty of people buy palms specifically for slow growth. Phoenix roebellinis are one of the most popular slow growing palms here. I live in HOA valley, they have no rules against slow growth. Even if growth was an issue hypothetically. Okay, then you just buy the palm mature. There’s a Pheonix roebellini I can buy down the street with 5 feet of trunk. Its not cheap, but the option is available. There are plenty of commercial nurseries that specialize in selling mature palms like the date, canary date, Mediterranean, and robustas for commercial use. -

alzo replied to HouseMouse's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
There are no palms native to Russia that I'm aware of. From you're description, a very hardy, suckering fan palm with fibres between it's leaf nodes and imported from Europe, sounds a lot like Chamaerops humilis, also known as the mediterranean fan palm. Non so commonly discussed, but there will be others in America. Does your grandpas palm look like this? This palm also has a compact blue leaf form. Picture from the palm centre -

Pretty hard to diagnose a palm without a picture, even a doctor would want to see scans or an X-ray before making a diagnosis? -

Juania Australis in the British Isles
Hu Palmeras replied to UK_Palms's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
Look, my great lord and friends. Look at the little Juania Australis. They are like your beautiful palm trees too. But just look at them. You know that every palm tree gladdens the heart of us all. This one, of course, gladdens my heart. The more I search, the louder I will applaud it, the more shouts of joy I will raise, and the more trust I will place in it. This other unique kingdom has been added to my collection. -

They sprout easily. The hard part is living long enough to see some semblance of maturity on the babies. -

Here in Hawaii, some Pritchardia are T&E and one likely could not export seed. I can’t find any specific regs governing the export of less-threatened Pritchardia species. Obviously, CITES would have to be consulted. Does anyone have experience with this?
