Has this forum gone from semi regional and helpful to worldwide extreme exotics? I cant find anything in between. I scroll pages of cool stuff but nothing I can get or grow here. Nothing I can contribute to either. The whole board is littered with google search terms of unicorn palms in places so vastly different than I could even think of growing. I’m in cfla and should have a ton of interest but I see almost nothing. Can there not be regional boards or what? I feel like the main page discourages anyone searching and looking for guidance or inspiration. Inspiration is what first brought me here. all I see is scientific names in far corners of the world now. Any old timers (5+yrs) feel the same?

TropicsEnjoyer replied to Mazat's topic in TROPICAL LOOKING PLANTS - Other Than Palms
Thanks for asking. It’s doing well, growing slowly but steadily. I think it’s focused on root growth right now, the bottom of the pot is looking like live spaghetti. Here’s a picture of the plant now. Doesn’t look much different but I assume when it warms up next year things will get going faster. -

On Christmas Eve , in Ventura , we were walking around and my wife took this picture of the ground around some Washingtonia palms . We have had a lot of rain and wind . Some very nice coloring on the debris and leaf bases of the palms . Harry -

South American socratea rostrata, Geonoma bondaria seedlings
Harry’s Palms replied to happypalms's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
Yea , only one cycad down there so far. They grow so slowly , except for the large Dioon in the front yard. Maybe a Zamia or something , the Zamia Furfuracea in front seems to grow well. I would like at least one more Livistona to keep the Australis and Chinensis company. I have about 13 palms down there now that have survived the gophers ( I have lost more than that!) and one Cycas Revoluta . Harry -

Nice little slice of earth if you ask me. Fantastic view palms and dont spot a friendly gopher or two! You need cycads on that hill, tough reasonably fast growing, and are cool tolerant a lot of cycas species. And if you’re lucky they won’t be gopher food. Richard -

And Ptychosperma elegans definitely not referred to an Alexander palms in Australia. I’m not a fan of any common name but that one surely takes the cake for the most senseless and confusing! - Yesterday

I had no idea that they emit an odor! I have been down the hill when mine is blooming and never noticed it. My gardener cuts them once they go to seed. The inflorescence is cool looking though . Harry

You must have got yours from one of the earliest seed batches to arrive in the States. Is that male or female?
-
Good luck trying to grow palms in that kind of environment. Took me one second to realize that it wasn't a comma.

Every year it's the same thing. Someone's going to get hit . I want to keep my faith and hope for a mild winter, I think we all deserve it after a few years of cold winters. We shall see. Fingers crossed.

I woke up and looked out the bedroom window, and bingo living the dream of exotic plants, Hawaii may have the climate for such tropical beauties, but my climate is good enough for me. Just a couple more degrees warmer in winter and it’s on par with a lot of other places for that exotic look! -

Southern Hemisphere Growing Season 2025/26
Jonathan replied to Jonathan's topic in WEATHER / CLIMATE
Ooph. Too hot... Was 15 in Hobart...too cold! We had three days in a row of temps between 14 and 16 over Christmas. Ridiculous, although also fairly traditional Sydney Hobart weather...gotta make sure the fleet gets smashed by a southerly somewhere along the route! 27 today and looking good going forward, so hopefully the Frankenspring is over!
