I've had a couple of Darwin experiments with the above. So far in my experience, Alfredii is fine down to 24.6F and frost. Some leaf burn but nothing major. Macrocarpa = dead in the open, some burn under cover but ok. They died of bud rot. I have several survivors of 26-27F that were under canopy and generally recovered just fine. Oliviformis = dead, but all were barely 2' tall in the ground and without cover. Likely bud rot, but hard to say. I've never tried a large one. Pembana = lost some trunks at 25F with frost, easily defoliated like Lutescens. I had one cluster completely die from trunk rots after the 25F frost. I have two more clusters that are 3-5' tall, we shall see!!!

Meanwhile, for comparison up in the PNW, my Washingtonia are under cover from this. It rained cats n dogs all last night. *A warm front drawing in moist, subtropical air continues to produce rain, at times heavy, across East Vancouver Island today. The heavy rain will ease to showers this afternoon.

I agree 100%. looks very LIvistona but probably is a washy. -
Last chance for the Deppea, my green waste bin is picked up each Thursday and this plant may be in it next week.

The great Palm weevil temp experiment
Stevetoad replied to Stevetoad's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
You're not kidding. Ive had them eating the apple chunks fully submerged. In my area they took out a CIDP and now there is a queen and a washy that have collapsed crowns that are no more than 5o yards from the CIDP stump. It may be a coincidence but it's awfully fishy and concerning if true. -
I offer a 15 gallon, well grown palm, it is about four inches diameter at the base and needs ground planting. This is considered to be the easiest New Caledonia palm for coastal California. There is even a lonely one living almost feral at the Lakeside Palmetum in Oakland. $165 at my garden, or $200 delivered, ( immediate Bay Area, like Novato to Concord to San Jose) Cash or PayPal, thanks https://www.palmpedia.net/palmsforcal/Burretiokentia_hapala

The great Palm weevil temp experiment
Stevetoad replied to Stevetoad's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
Unfortunately they are on the way. one of my shops is in Mission Viejo and I have seen the evil weevil damage as far up as san Clemente and that's without actively looking around. You can see some damaged CIDP in the Cristianitos creek by trestles. in hindsight the freezer is. a bit of a stupid test as those temps would kill a palm outright anyway. The 26-28f falls inline with what my yard has seen as its record low so im a bit upset that there wasn't death. Im sure the weevils nuzzle into a warmer area too. - Today

The great Palm weevil temp experiment
LJG replied to Stevetoad's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
Things are ridiculously resilient. In some of my traps, then I forget to put a killing agent in the water they swim for seven plus days before finally dying and drowning. -
Robusta probably won't even defoliate just get brown on the leaf edges.

Johnathan, these are nifty little palms and I was going to mention the small paperback reference in Richard’s post above. It’s one of my favorite palm books on the shelf. Than, I have to agree with you about palms with thin stemmed trunks with spreading crowns and the look they create. Richard, thanks for the book shout out. Tim

With a low somewhere near 20F forecasted for tomorrow night, and winds now expected to remain gusty throughout the night, wind chills are expected to get down to single digits here, potentially as low as 5F. Aside from worrying about plants, wind chills this low is very dangerous. If you live in northern FL, avoid going outside if possible Sunday morning and if you have to, bundle up really well. As far as plants go, my Queens probably get defoliated regardless, they're already showing signs of minor burn from 21F earlier this week. Even if the temperature itself doesn't burn the fronds completely, I'm sure the extremely dry wind will.

I need some help with this little sabal minor cherooke I got as a present (first time having this palm)
Tosiek_Poland posted a topic in PALMS IN POTS
I got it in christmas it was okay for the first few weeks it had perfect conditions for overwintering (temp: 10C-5C, slight watering once a month, a lot of light) then It started browning and leaves got a bit curled up , so I touched the ground feeling that it was a bit dry decided to water it and put it in a warmer room (15C-20C) looked at it today and its worse. I dont know what to do because all of the other plants are fine and only sabal has a problem I dont want to lose this thing because I want to plant it this year. (sorry for bad English) -
The great Palm weevil temp experiment
tinman10101 replied to Stevetoad's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
i love experiments steve. the analyst in me is perplexed why your salt below 32F did not kill the beetle. i guess there are many variables including sustaining the temps at 26-28F and not all beetles are created equal comes to mind or possibly your freezer is set to way below 0F (ie ... <26F). regardless, cool experiment and sad that you have that many in your yard to participate in your experiment. i live north of LA and just anticipating the gradual migration northwards. -
Differentiating between Phoenix sylvestris and Phoenix dactylifera

Here is my sylvestris grown from rps seed. Can you observe how short are leaflets compared to dactylifera of similar size -
Whether to fertilize my lipstick palm
PJP replied to MiamiNorm's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
University of Florida IFAS Blog fertilizer recommendation as well as Steve Stern who ran an exotic nursery in Homestead. I mix the fertilizers 4 (8-2-12) to 1 (0-0-22) ratio. I use this mix on all my palms. The Cuban palms get extra KMag (0-0-22). -

There is a rule in our climate regarding the more exotic palms: fast grower fast goner.

Most Neoregelias seem to do fine down to freezing. Aechmeas are variable (especially chantnii and certain blanchetiana variants). A couple of years ago we had several nights in a row the 40s with days in the 50s. I know it sounds weird, but a bunch out in the open got moderate leaf burns. Those in patches partially under low trees, would burn where exposed and transition to fine under the trees. They get big tan necrotic blotches overnight. Crotons like Picasso’s paintbrush will defoliate. It’s not instant death like a freeze, but they look terrible for a year til they grow out. I’ve got hundreds of bromeliads now. Many in the ground. A bunch of the prized ones in pots will be going under the roof at least.

I'll let you know how this beccariophoenix does in Orlando. Current forecast is 25F. Way too big to protect so I'll just water the soil well

Dictyosperma album var ‘conjugatum’ Seeds- any interest?
NatureGirl replied to NatureGirl's topic in For Sale
Dictyo ‘conjugatum’ Seeds are here, along with 15 fresh Areca novohibernica, if anyone’s interested in those. I can hold off shipping until this cold weather passes if necessary. -
In an effort to see how much cold these spawns of satan can handle I devised a very scientific experiment to preform in them. I caught 3 South American palm weevils put them each in a tube and placed one in my freezer at 0f, one in my refrigerator at 35f and one in a cooler with ice and salt and was able to hold the temperature between 26-28f. Here are the results… freezer at 0f for 1 hour (dead) refrigerator at 35f for 12 hours (alive) 40 hours (alive) salt / ice at 26-28f for 12 hours (alive) 40 hours (still alive) not a great outcome being that those temps would do a bunch of damage on its own.

That early cold wave in the middle of the second week of November may have been an omen. It left me with symptoms of cold denial. Now we are at the end of January getting beach bullied by the arctic with little end in sight.
