Mexican Fan Palm in zone 7b/8a

Hello there! I planted the palm in ground as today, march 8th. Since mid february, we only had sun, highs of 15-20C and no frost, this should be going on for another two weeks or maybe its gonna only get warmer, the south wall where i planted it gets above 25C everyday and is pretty warmer than much of the garden during the night.

    The lovely lanonia dasyantha

They are a winner, I can’t wait for my large form varieties to grow up and see what they look like. I did read that they lose there mottled look if well fed. I just liquid fish emulsion my ones and they seem to hold the mottled look.

I got a few floating around the nursery, did you repot mercs plant or leave as is after getting it, because if you didn’t repot it, mercs plants needed to be repotted after you get them, he had his fertiliser down pat hydroponically, but once they left his nursery a different story, the perlite vermiculite mix was trouble for a lot of growers!

    Calling out Rhopalostylis experts🙏

I agree with the others that you’ve got an R. baueri. Incidentally, Rhopalostylis and Archontophoenix DNA is not similar and, therefore, cannot hybridize with each other.
  11. Why did you leave it outside? Howea are perfekt indoor plants inour areas. Hopefully it recovers. Greetings Eckhard

    Brahea edulis-Cold Hardy?

Brahea edulis is surprisingly hardy in my wet and cool climate. I have not protected this B. edulis since around 2013. Planted as a small seedling in 2008 it has grown quite a lot since then. It is faster growing then B. armata in our climate. After the unusually cold winters of 2018 and 2021 it almost completely defoliated but the spears did never pull and recovery was fast. It sustains little to no damage during our more normal winters. If temperatures start to drop to around -6°C/-7 (+/-20°F) for some duration you do start to see some leafdamage. I live at 50°N in Belgium, Z9a. Low this year was around -3.5°C(-25°F) on Christmas eve and a few nights just below zero at the beginning of januari. While much of Europe experienced a very cold winter our little region bordering the south north sea escaped the worst of it.

Hyles lineata enjoying the breeze created by a fan placed in a doorway after a hot afternoon.. While i knew we had several, curious as to just how many species of Sphinx / Hawk / Hummingbird Moth species can be seen in the state, inc. those that frequently wander into the state from various areas nearby ( S.Cal, Baja, and Sonora ), turns out ..depending on what part of the state you're in / time of year you may observe ..at least a dozen < or more > of the 50+ species of these moths that occur here. Aggregation of Anthrophora californica settling in for the night within the dense cover of Larrea tridentata.. Always interesting observing how solitary bee species sleep.
  14. @Mazat be patient and wait on both. You have nothing to lose, though I understand @Phoenikakias’s concerns. Let us know in a few weeks!
  15. @Mazat SIE GEHEN! (YOU GO!) Chamadorea elegans are startlingly tough; they don’t look it.
  16. @guillerman looks like you’ve got a really REALLY nice Rhop. baueri purple crownshaft just like mine!

    Fake Spring and Anxiety

Well, I apparently decided I needed 6 alocasia, 2 philodendrons, a Ficus Elastica to replace my mom's that the cats killed, and another 2 dozen colocasia bulbs after some trades and eBay flips. So I went from having everything under control to oh boy I can put stuff outside now, so there's that. It's crazy, I'm acting like I'm trying to actually set up a business.

    🚨 ANNOUNCEMENT 🚨

This did not last long. A few trades and a couple eBay sales and I've got multiple small exotic aroids on the way, and God knows how many colocasia bulbs. I made friends with an eBay seller who lives close by and she said she's gonna send me "a bunch" of extras on top of the 10 I bought. Time to start splitting up the green sprouts and putting them in bags in cheap soil for sales. And build that shelf. And add more lights. And restock the bedroom. There will be updates on my thread and socials when things start coming in if anybody here still cares. I made sure to buy a couple things because I wanted them vs buying things I can sell, too. But there's still some outliers of stuff that I know nobody for at least 100 miles has.
  19. Thank you Happy Palms. The Bombax ceiba's that I am familiar with have numerous spines on the bark of the tree. Perhaps because these are very old, they have lost their spines. I appreciate your assistance. I think you nailed it!
  20. I feel horrible for this gentleman. He said he was in Loxahatchee, which is 15 to 20 miles west of the ocean. It demonstrates the difference between inland southeast Florida and coastal in these relatively rare events. Most of the trees, while damaged, will survive and produce. This is what they look like in my hood.

    Hints of Spring ..Part 2?..

Hippeastrum sending up inflos at the correct time of year.. Salmon flowered Four O' Clock awakening from it's winter nap. " Beavertail Season " begins.. Looks like the specimens planted in this yard will beat the ones at the old house this year. More buds on these than the ones over there this year too. Dracopsis amplexicaulis Clarkia amonea ( Farewell- to - Spring ) getting ready to say goodbye to Spring. Good morning, Delonix regia. Nice to see you awake..

    Post-Winter 2026 Results Thread

@Ben G. that looks bad. I’ve never had a Sabal recover from a spear pull. You know what to do, and give it all summer and if it continues to go down hill or doesn’t push it’s time to call It. Here in Houston we had the one night at 23F with no freezing precipitation and daytime highs above freezing. This past week is when I started to see a lot of damage. Needle palms. 2/4 of damaged, one spear pulled the other cosmetic. Last year 3/4 were damaged. I’ll never understand why these keep getting called the most cold hardy palm. Sabal causiarum 2/2 damaged with over 50% burn Mule palm - 1/2 damaged. Some older fronds growing off and spear broke off but is pushing new growth BxJ - 1/2 damaged - cosmetic damage to spear Butia 2/3 damaged - cosmetic damage to spear Chamaerops humilis - bad spear pull, I ripped it out of the ground in disgust. CIDP - cosmetic damage to spear Livistona nitida- 2/2 have very bad damage and fungus on about 2 fronds plus emerging spear. No spear pull and new growth is healthy. The density of the growing point makes it impossible to see down in there. So 12 palms so far that show damage out of around 40. Better than last year where it was 30/36. Houston must be the hardest zone 9B in the world for growing cold hardy palms. Both of my mexicana look flawless. Sourced from the palms at the John Fairey Garden.

Yep,barring some crazy cold front. We're not out of the woods for freezes, but the icebox single digits stuff is in the rear view. Honestly I probably could have opened them after the first week of February but I was not willing to gamble

    Calling out Rhopalostylis experts🙏

Looks like Rhopalostylis baueri. Could be R baueri var cheesmanii which I’ve seen can have a purple tinge to the crownshaft but I’m not sure if that’s formally diagnostic.
  26. What variegated aloifolia do you have? I would love to see a picture, if possible
