  6. That is a great spot!!

    Hyphaene coriacea

Coriacea needs a 10 cm deeper pot than thebaica.
  8. It’s amazing to have a plant for 25 years and you finally find that right spot in the garden for it. I still have empty places in my garden that I landscaped 30 years ago knowing I will have the right plant one day for that special spot. Slowly iam filling those gaps it seems iam in no hurry that’s for sure!
  9. On the potting bench today with some of the personal palms for the garden. calyptrogyne ghiesbreghtiana cocothrinax argentatadypsis rivularis kentiopsis pyriformis dypsis faneva roscheria melonochaetes Nicely done with the Geonoma Panama at the back! A few more for the garden later on.

Pindo, Mule or Alfredii for front yard?

It’s hard to appreciate how big Alfredii are from pictures. They are monsters.

    Hyphaene coriacea

G'day Luke, cute that you refer to WA as a cooler climate, though there are degrees of definition I guess! I germinated some many years ago in a moment of madness but needless to say they stood little chance down here and slowly withered away. Was just going to mention what you probably already know about remote germination, keeping the seed elevated, deep pots, etc. And there was a recent thread which might be interesting: Good luck with them! Cheers, Jonathan

    Chamaedorea glaucifolia ?

Good job @Phoenikakias Looks like glaucifolia!
  13. I need a bit of guidance from the cycas gurus in plant land. I know I have a female Ferox the larger plant in the first picture, and from a bit of horticulture knowledge I think I have a male plant. What iam asking is what are the signs iam looking for so I know when to collect the male pollen and how. Also what are the signs to look for with the female cone as to when to pollinate. Or can I just get a paint brush and go to town when it looks good, without any specific technique. The plants are both 30 years old and where supplied by Rolf kyburz of kyburz palms back in the day.

So What Caught Your Eye Today?

Marojejya darinii and a nice little dypsis lantzeana seemed to have liked the summer we just had!

    Chamaedorea glaucifolia ?

  16. For me basically anytime is a good time, with the exception of mid summer, unless iam planting in raised beds with irrigation all summer, otherwise summer can get unpredictable in my climate and you can go 6 weeks or more without any rainfall, and when the temperatures are above 35 degrees Celsius for most of that 6 weeks it spells disaster for water loving palms. Ernies are top little palms, just check and make sure you don’t have earthworms in the container that can be problematic, underneath my benches in the nursery there is always soil there from the container plants either from plants falling over, the hose washing soil out or just bits that’s fall out of the bottom of the container. And iam pretty sure you have a male Ernie there. Richard

    To hybridize or not

This is the largest spadix in my glauca. Is there any chance, that one can predict sex by the its shape?

    Kentia dying

For an indoor plant it looks way to wet and boggy looking, but it definitely has problems.

  26. I’m cooked. Loosing hope. Dropped a bunch of fronds yesterday and still have green(ish) crowns but got zero growth. Spears don’t pull and no collapse but nearly no color and the spears that were growing haven’t opened or moved an inch. Royals, adonidia’s, or areca’s. Bananas pushed out about 1ft, areca’s down low pushed, hibiscus starting to push, arguable aboricola. Looks like a wasteland here. Going to wait till the weekend to start cutting. the Christmas while huge for my area aren’t a shock. I expected the royals to do better. Areca’s not shocked but I may lose the ones with 10ft of trunk. Bismarck took a shot too. Several bleached fronds and about a half dozen “broken” by the trunk hanging down.

Paul, I posted a wanted ad for this plant on this forum, and unwittingly had a unfortunate experience of someone replying from supposedly Arizona. The end game was that he finally refund my money after some time, and and a lot of trouble, I was lucky. The last time I saw this plant for sale was moons ago in Lafayette, CA and I didn't buy any. I did track down the person and he has sold his property. Perhaps Florabunda will get these going. I am writing this as a warning to be cautious about procuring this plant in USA. There is a another member from our group in Contra Costa that has one sex, but I spoke to him, and it has never flowered. Last year, we did tour in South Bay, and he had a few plants, but perhaps has seeds. Contact me and I will give you his name. I have been meaning to follow up, but have been busy. Hoping I might get to Australia in future and bring back some seeds, just a dream to get to Lord Howe Island and hike. Let me know if you do find this plant, as I would like to obtain one as well. I think Jason DeWees in the your neck of woods advertised a wanted ad, and don't know if he found one or not. Regards, Cecile
