I can’t believe the Met Office haven’t put out a red heat advisory warning yet. This heatwave looks to potentially be about as bad as it gets for us here. Shaping up for 3-4 days of 37C+ / 100F+ with a POSSIBLE peak of 41C / 106F… 24C / 75F minimum at Kew Gardens lol… Both ARPEGE and UKV have 41C / 106F plotted on there.

Im officialy throwing in the towel here. I dont have the time to soak an acre worth of plants everyday. It dies it dies. This area of the state is nowhere near tropical or anything of the sort. It's a desert with humidity. We only get rain from tropical systems and its cold af every winter. If I ever decide to grow anything again ill.move to a place where the stuff actualy grows.

Your little mysterious seedling has grown. At the moment it’s one of those lucky dips you get at the fair! Richard

The baggie method is a proven technique for germinating palm seeds. And in your case even better that it is proven, as all other attempts failed. Never give up on seeds until they are completely rotted. And it does look like the bench is getting full of seedlings in the garage, and I also suspect that the wife’s Tupperware cupboard is getting more room by the looks of the plastic container collection, I get the complaints from my wife about have you seen any containers there are some missing.😂 Richard

This is looking great. Even I haven’t had to water since maybe Feb! You’re still braver than than me, my latest palm purchases were Livistona chinensis and some Trachycarpus martianus. Nowhere near what you’re doing. This heat and constant rain is really pushing the growth around here.

Tough to see Tracy.. The unfortunate thing to me about the weevils love of canariensis, is that there are so many of them and that they are generally so large. I’m convinced that because of their sheer size they simply become weevil nurseries for months on end. Too big to deal with, especially if they’re on public land. So they just sit and infect everything around them. Pretty discouraging.

I never counted the leaves on prior flushes but they seemed similar. By the way, nice Encephalartos turneri!

Leaf drop on Archontophoenix myolensis revealing some nice crownshaft colour. I still can’t quite capture the colour in photo for A myolensis crownshafts. In person it has a prominent aqua hue.

Check it regularly to be sure it roots in. Nudge the base; when it won’t wobble or wiggle anymore it’s rooted in!

Looks very Arenga or Caryota like at that early stage. If you tossed Arenga seed around I’d say that’s probably it. But yes, in a month or 2 once that first frond has unfurled you’ll have more certainty.

Kyle, I forgot to mention you should attend some of the next Palm Society of Southern California meetings for the auctions. There are always plenty of things people donate for the auctions. I have acquired many palms at those meetings over the years. I think based on your posts over the years, you know what won't survive in El Centro and have a pretty good idea of most of the genra that will either thrive or at least have a chance in your current home. Added bonus, you will probably meet people that have germinated a few things in their gardens that have extras at a meeting.... i.e. the backyard growers.

My wife and I went for a walk along the lagoon that seperates Leucadia from Carlsbad, on the Carlsbad side this morning. We used to walk and ride bikes along the lagoon before there was much development to its north so have seen it change over nearly 40 years. This morning's walk was just another step in the changes as the many Phoenix canariansis that naturalized along the lagoon's shoreline showed the devastation from the South American Palm Weevil. There are still some young CIDP's but most of the older large ones are now stumps or transitioning to becoming stumps. It is sad to see but I decided to capture it and share it in some photos. The progression of the SAPW....

I was in Mallorca for the past few days, highest temp was 35c there. And have arrived back to the UK to possibly the warmest forecast I have ever seen for June. I wouldn’t rule out 40c/104f.

I just finished watering all the outdoor community pots and noticed a couple of Kentiopsis Olivformis from @DoomsDave are sprouting . Lots of stuff popping up in the garden and on the work bench. Harry

@kylecawazafla glad to hear about your new place! There’s a lot of cool palms that will make it out your way, though possible cold will likely limit more than heat. Caribbean palms and Bizzies and Medemias are a good start!

Just received my ceroxylon amazonicum from Ecuador ! These palms are nearly impossible to find, & I don't have the patience to start one from seed (in addition to their difficult seedling stage). I was surprised at how large the palm is ~ US size 9 womens shoe for scale The palm arrived in amazing condition. I potted it up & hoping I can get it in the ground at some point. I am so happy to finally have a Ceroxylon ! This one will be going in shade for awhile. Will post updates here periodically. Would love to see anyone else's success with Ceroxylon. I know they thrive in cool damp weather.

I decided to check the baggie with the C. Decipiens seeds because I saw sprouts and roots through the plastic. I found 5 seeds that had sprouted and moved them into small pots. There were 12 seeds total in this bag . All other attempts have failed , so far. I left the other seeds in the baggie just in case of late arrivals . Harry I will keep them warm for a while (garage temp) until my greenhouse is complete. The work bench is getting crowded!

Who is growing or at least germinating seeds of this spectacular "cold hardy " palm? Who has more info about the botanic aspects of this apparently new species? I am fortunate to have some seeds germinating. Rarepalmseeds describes it as follow: "A spectacular new Lanonia found at high elevation on limestone hills in northern Vietnam. It is related to Lanonia dasyantha but differs in its larger, very heavily mottled glossy leaf and significantly larger seeds. Like Lanonia dasyantha, it is tolerant of prolonged cool conditions and temperatures that can occasionally go down almost to freezing even in habitat. This is despite its very tropical apperarance, and very much unlike similar palms such as Licuala mattanensis 'Mapu', Licuala sp. 'Kalimantan Mottled' or Licuala maculata, which are very demanding and only grow well in hot humid tropical climates. Lanonia sp. 'Large Mottled' will actually grow successfully not only in tropical but also in warm temperate climates, where it appreciates a protected spot in filtered light. Our seeds were collected only from a very remote, high elevation population where every single plant shows a heavily mottled leaf. Lower elevation populations, also in northern Vietnam show a less intensely mottled leaf even though their seeds are a similar size, see Lanonia sp. 'Less Mottled'" ( pics from the RPS site)
