I’m not home to take a current photo but overall this is the set up I have added to from completely open in the beginning. Roughly 300’ x 53’, although the backyard runs around 230’ x 60’ at the marsh. Intracoastal in the distance. Ocean a mile or two to the east. Being on the island I feel we struggle with adequate rainfall. Some size constraints due to width and I have run podocarpus the length of the yard and Bambusa gracilis for a large part. Only a live oak, mule and beccariophoenix Alfredii in the middle back portion of yard plus a Seabreeze bamboo and saw palmetto in the way back.

Yes, I think I messed up and used the same mix I dot for my other palms: perlite mixed with palm soil. Thus fast draining. I didn't it so it doesn't get root rot in the spring and fall. Thus I probably need to amend with more clay mixed in. The rocks I have on there are to throw off the squirrels from digging. Maybe I'll put more mulch instead of the thin layer I have on it now

Speed of growth and smaller crown size maybe if planted from smaller palms but you have a point

I have those too. Also, my neighbor kitty corner to me had a large windmill palm in the same sun. It had a 13ft trunk before it died in the Texas freeze

They may do decently with irrigation or afternoon shade. But why would anyone plant a Trachycarpus over a Sabal palmetto or mexicana in full sun in Dallas? Or Chamaerops cerifera if the space available is smaller?

Some zone 10 survivors at Disney... 2 Licuala grandis at the Moana area in Epcot. There were several others near the entrance but they are died.

I have two large (about 6ft) bougainvilleas in very large pots (I repotted from very small ones straight to very large ones few months ago). The medium is a mixture of local garden soil and acidic sandy soil with great drainage. I also added some peat and mulch on top. Temperatures reach about 100 F these days and humidity is low. The leaves look wilted so I started watering more often but I noticed zero difference. Few hours after watering or the day after, the medium is moist but the leaves still look like this. What could it be? The wind? I cannot spot any pests under the magnifying lense. They are in pots because the yard soil where they are is horrendous; mostly concrete from past build works.

For sure. Had an ultimate low of 20F, but there were at least 3 nights below 24F. It got a sheet wrapped around the trunk and spear area (somehow I managed to not stab myself) but no heat. Only green left following the freeze was the parts covered by the sheet. It lost a crown of fronds that was about as much as it is holding currently. So long story short, it has managed to fully recover its crown up to this point and from here on it'll be additional growth. I am very pleased with its performance this year!

My palm has definitely seen better days. Can anyone please provide guidance as to the cause of and cure for its condition. No high winds or lightning strikes have occurred. Thanks in advance.

Great choice! Although a very slow grower, it's well worth the wait..A very durable, compact palm, that fits right into today's smaller yards. Here's one of mine, flourishing in the Arizona desert. aztropic Mesa, Arizona

I guess this could be considered a ring! @tim_brissy_13 here’s another Gaussia , sharing the spot light here in Southern California. One of my recent acquisitions. Harry Gaussia Gomez Pompae . I peeled the leaf base off when I got it home. So far , I believe wifey , who loves my palms but not like me , has claimed this one . Probably end up in a sunny spot later this year. I think somewhere out front , they are so cool , they deserve attention for sure.

I approach both my Livistona with caution. The younger Australis and the older Chinensis will both cause blood to flow if not handled with gloves and caution. Also worthy of respect are Butia O. and Chamerops H. They are beautiful palms but from a distance , like many Phoenix. I had a small tip of a thorn lodge in my elbow when I was trimming . The thorn went right through my sweat shirt . I pulled it off my arm and thought that was the end of it. A few days later my elbow would hardly move without pain and it swelled. The very tip of the thorn broke off in my arm . I got it out with a sewing needle with a bit of effort. Just be careful! Harry

@Banana Belt your jubaeas are truly inspiring. To have a specimen similar to that in the yard would be incredible. it’s putting out its 5th frond of the year and I’ve only trimmed one completely brown frond so far. All I used for protection the last two winters was a sting of C9 Xmas lights around the trunk for the dead of winter (mid dec-February) and I through a moving blanket around the trunk while I was out of town in January. That and a thick layer of bark mulch. Hoping for another molding winter this year 🤞. It clearly appreciated a lack on nights in the teens.

The red for me is orange now, but still in the red nearby. Projections ade for august to dry out some before the fall expectation of more rain than average. I will believe that once it happens.
