A little update on one of my 2 Medemia Arguns. First inflos! Only one of the 2 plants is blooming so still have my fingers crossed for a male and female.

Randall, I just had a thought.. you make another tiki hut, but mobile! Think about it; you roll up to every garden tour, pop the door open and start mixing! Imagine the uptick in enthusiasm. I mean, palms are awesome, but palms and cocktails.. next level stuff.. Thanks again for the invite!

Washingtonia Robusta Naturalized/Invasive in So Cal?
Silas_Sancona replied to SCVpalmenthusiast's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
To a degree, yes.. More technically, robusta falls just outside the CA Floristic Province.. That said, they've been native to this part of North America ..which includes CA... for much longer than any of it had names.. Can't remember if the genus was present on mainland Mexico before Baja broke off and began drifting north and west.. Homework: ** Flora recorded within the Green River Fossil Deposits ..in Wyoming. Note the " tropical " plant Genus recorded there. Let alone how far north that is from S. Cal. ** When Palms, Ficus, and an Avocado relative now restricted to Mexico, grew around the shallow, warm sea that is now the Central Valley.. Crocodiles, Boa Constrictor, and Iguana roamed CA ..southern part, of the state at least, around the same time, perhaps a little longer. Kern Vulture, a now extinct relative of the exotic looking King Vulture got it's name after it's fossilized remains were un earthed ..in Kern County. Current assumed range of the King Vulture itself extends no further than Sinaloa, though all current inat sightings / observations have been from much further south in Mexico. -
What is your current yard temperature?
Silas_Sancona replied to GottmitAlex's topic in WEATHER / CLIMATE
82F at 6:07PM after another nice April afternoon in the low Desert.. Up, a little, under more clouds tomorrow, then back to around 85F on Friday as some cooler air from a storm passing to our north reaches the area.. Up, into the low / mid 90s for the weekend and start of next week w/ some clouds around at times, before yet another spring storm passes thru the region, ..per the current forecasts.. Like the recent systems we've seen pass through, highly unlikely we'll se much -if any- rain chances unless the next storm approaches from a direction that can provide the right dynamics to generate precip. here. High country? ..you might see some showers, and maybe a little more snow on the highest peaks. Forget any hope of salvaging the snow pack though. Overall, this oddly March -esque pattern ..in April, after the reverse, last month, looks to continue as we head through the last 15 days of the month. With that said, highly likely it will start to moderate as we close in on the final days of the month, esp. if some of the thinking regarding Greenland Blocking in the CPC's 10 day discussion and elsewhere atm pans out.. Going with that, here is how some of the teleconnections that can influence the WX pattern here ..and ..everywhere else.. are looking, with a shot at what kind of overall wx pattern is associated with each index phase ( Positive vs Negative ) *** Keep in mind that these 3 teleconnections are just 3 ..of many other players... in a weather pattern and don't always stick to the suggested script(s) *** NAO: AO: PNA: ...Regardless, we all know the heat won't be held back much longer, ..so enjoy what we got, ..while it sticks around.. Checking in, interesting how this month has trended compared to what we saw last month.. Nothing- burger temp anomalies so far.. 🤔 for the day: ...Could we actually escape April ...WITHOUT.... seeing a single 100 / 100+ reading??? ..We'll see - Today

Washingtonia Robusta Naturalized/Invasive in So Cal?
SCVpalmenthusiast replied to SCVpalmenthusiast's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
Interesting, so now washingtonia filifera includes both robusta and filifera? I guess its kind of an oxymoron to be native and invasive. So if they’re officially lumped together that means two palms have become native to California. -

What does my Sylvestris need?
Hu Palmeras replied to ThunderMoon's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
These are elegant palm trees. They are dressed in majesty. -
I actually do have some updates that I posted in another thread here. I just posted new update on them!

Let me start by saying winter was ROUGH, whatever that was needs to not happen again 😂 Things are pretty good so far, it’s been so dry, I guess we aren’t getting any April showers. Bragg Blvd Washie Seed Grown from Texas This one looks the most rough because my Christmas lights cooked it a bit but it’s growing out the damage
-
Two 3-gal juvenile palms exposed to 27°F. One protected with a cotton shirt experienced 60% foliar damage. Another unprotected in a more exposed spot suffering from a nutritional deficiency had zero damage! Both pushing new growth after first rain of the year.

What does my Sylvestris need?
ThunderMoon replied to ThunderMoon's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
Here's another photo of a bottom branch. This one has its own "thing" going on, with several leaves dead on one side. Is this unusual? Generally speaking, would magnesium sulfate help with the yellowing? Or is it too freshly planted for something like that? Thanks, Damien -
Chrysalidocarpus decipiens…Is This One Getting Ready To Flower?
happypalms replied to Jim in Los Altos's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
You won’t really know until she flowers for sure, but she does look pregnant, never tell a lady she looks fat or ask are pregnant if she’s really not. So for now Jim just tell she looks good!- 1 reply

Chrysalidocarpus decipiens…Is This One Getting Ready To Flower?
Jim in Los Altos posted a topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
My twenty+ year old C. Decipiens (formerly known as Dypsis decipiens) is bulging in its crown shaft. It’s never flowered before and, for those in the know, do you think an inflorescence is hiding in there?- 1 reply

Thanks for the advice greatly appreciated. As you suggested I might go with just a few suckers if any have a few roots. The sterile medium sounds the go. I just did a Areca vestria to see how that goes it’s sitting in a shallow tray of water with seaweed solution. Thanks for the tips!

A new plant in the collection. And the easiest way to grow something that’s new is plant it in the ground.

Washingtonia Robusta Naturalized/Invasive in So Cal?
Silas_Sancona replied to SCVpalmenthusiast's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
Somewhere around here, you'll find the loonngg thread regarding this discussion with lots of info to digest.. Regarding This, Only organism that acknowledges state / international " Borders " are a certain group of humans.. Rest of the living world, inc. most humans, does not. Oceans, and limits to climate related adaptations are the only barriers that limit what lives / grows where.. Another angle to this story is that, ..in another recent thread, this one here.. Washingtonia species were recently lumped together, so.. What you ..and everyone else.. in CA and other warm -enough parts of the west.. are seeing when you see robusta, or hybrids, or pure filifera sprouting ..everywhere.. is that particular form of the species expanding it's range, helped in large part by humans bringing it into cultivation.. Other parts of the U.S. are close enough that robusta would spread afar on it's own over time.. The true invasive?, the tree saplings in your first shot.. Unless they are CA Walnuts, most likely, they are Chinese Pistache, ..or possibly Tree of Heaven < though the leaflets don't look right for that menace, imo > ..Note the first part of the common name/ epithet portion of the scientific name < chinensis >.. Is a reflection of where they originated, though some newer cultivars are hybrids w/ other sps from other parts of the old world. Plants brought here from there / other parts of Asia, ..or Europe, Africa, and / or AUS. generally don't have the " checks and balances " organisms around that keep them under control in their respective areas when released into cultivation in the US.. Thus, they can spread and negatively alter New World ecosystems. The reverse often occurs when plants introduced from the Americas escapes cultivation in x or y place in the old world. Excluding island regions like Cuba, Hawaii, or Puerto Rico, plenty of checks and balances around that evolved alongside Washingtonia - whatever to keep them in line, no matter where they're grown in the Americas. -

This was a nice event - well planned, many vendors. It was nice to meet @Fishinsteeg234 and would have bought some plants but my yard is in such terrible shape. I really need to get it cleaned up before committing to any new stuff. -
Help Identifying Archontophoenix Species Before Purchase (Purpurea / Myolensis / Maxima / Tuckeri)
mcfly01 replied to mcfly01's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
Wow, I'm amazed and speechless! It's fascinating and beautiful to see your three Alexandras growing so healthy and fast together! In my area, it's also somewhat dry despite being only 500 meters from the beach, but the winds are sometimes dry and quite strong. Perhaps the advantage of having them together is that it creates a small microclimate that helps them. Could you also share a picture of your adult Purpurea and whether it requires any special care? Does it grow as quickly as a Maxima or Alexandra? For a moment, I thought your Alexandras were Maximas because of the minimal leaf curl. I have a friend who also has an Alexandra with quite straight leaves. I'll tell you more about it in another post, because I think you can advise me on how to create a small microclimate for my palm trees. I'll send you photos of my tiny 4m x 4m garden, but... the space I have available for planting is only 4m x 60cm! -
Planting a couple of cycas species
happypalms replied to happypalms's topic in TROPICAL LOOKING PLANTS - Other Than Palms
Hot dry spots at that. I have given up trying anything else up there so cycas species it will be. Another problem in that part of the garden is the rocks there is only shallow spots left for small planting holes. -
Looks good @iDesign here’s an update on mine that was posted back in 2019 on this thread. I planted it in my “new” Garden in 2021. It’s now multi trunks, flowering and massive! Full Hawaiian sun, close to sea level. Maybe 100 ft elevation. Size 10 sandal for scale: here it is from the outside of my fence: And here’s what it looked like in 2019 after digging it up from my old garden. It stayed in this pot for 2 more years til being planted in 2021:

Ice Cream Banana What To Do
Silas_Sancona replied to SCVpalmenthusiast's topic in TROPICAL LOOKING PLANTS - Other Than Palms
Coffee Grounds for sure.. Worms / other decomposers in your soil will love it. You can also mix up a " Tea " containing a table spoon of Molasses to a gal. of water and apply that.. Both will enhance beneficial microbe activity in the soil as well. Bananas ..and everything else related to them ( Gingers / Heliconia, Strelitzia genus Bird of Paradise / Traveler's Palm < Ravenala > ) use a lot of K, so, ..on top of the easy to access options above, Applications of Sul - Po - Mag, or Langbeinite ( Pure, high - K source mineral ) are probably a good idea too.
