@Eric in Orlando I have two Grandis here just W of Sanford, both wer defokiated at 22.5F. The tiny seedling sized one seems to be regrowing, and the slightly larger one has two ne spears that are just stalled. So I might get one out of two suvivors. Other Licuala like Ramsayi, Spinosa, Sumawongii and Distans did well. My Ramsayi out in the open were badly burned but growing back ok, even though they are now in full sun. One of the Sumawongii was in full sun exposure and took basically zero damage. It only suffered later in the spring with a bit too much direct all day sun. My Hyophorbes were not so lucky. I lost a Verschaffeltii with 6 feet of trunk (the top just fell off from crown rot), and 3 of 5 other smaller ones. 3 of 4 Lagenicaulis survived. I trunk cut the tops of 3 of the Lagenicaulis to get to the bud rot, but cut one way too low and killed it. So really 3 of 3 survived. They are all very susceptible to crown rot.

Beautiful Tim! A happy one is really something to behold. I had to smile, as I think I got one years ago from Floribunda and it rolled over and died in the middle of a warm humid summer. Definitely one of my fastest kills ever. But, like in business, the faster I know, faster I can change directions, ha ha. Thanks for sharing that!

Great photos! For whatever reason pandans are hard to come by in Florida. Managed to get about a dozen seedlings of these and they are the fastest growing plants in my nursery. Hoping they can stand up to some occasional cold. Looking at these habitat photos I definitely need to clear some space around them though!

I have some that I need to separate from their community pot. I'll have them in the For Sale section and my Etsy shop when ready.

I'm not sure if this helps, but generally an iron deficiency will grow out white to yellow and just never turn green. So if it is green and turning yellow, then it is less likely to be iron related. You can also foliar spray the Southern Ag palm nutritiknal. I've done this when I suspect root rot, like with seedlings in maybe mucky soil. This worked in FL with regular rainfall. I am not sure about dry climates. I'm inclined to think it isn't nutrient related, as the others said. Most of the big incurable diseases would have the old fronds die first, like Ganoderma and Thielaviopsis. Fusarium almost always shows with one-sided frond death, and I don't see that. A bud rot seems most likely. When you cut the one frond, did you smell anything odd? Some fungi smell like a rotting dumpster in the hot sun, others smell like ripe bananas. Any weird smells might help ID it. For example, I just chopped up a Butia that had rapid older frond death and bud death...but the newest 3 or 4 fronds still were normal-ish. On cutting off the dying fronds they had internal disoloration and smelled like ripe bananas = Thielaviopsis. I think aluminum tris (like Fosetyl-Al) are systemics against common bud rots. Hydrogen peroxide, Daconil, copper-based fungicides and Mancozeb all are great for the surface. If it isn't responding, then a sytemic like aluminum tris or Banrot may be a good addition.

@idontknowhatnametuse plant it! I put a bunch in the ground last summer, at all the same size as yours. Unfortunately for me, we had an all time record low in February here, and my yard recorded 22.5F. This killed most of the small seedlings/strap leaves. But one survived! So based on the hardiness reports in Kinzyjr's sheet and my experience, it should work fine if you can keep things like Adonidia alive. Mature ones of those are 100% dead in my area...

Spotted some neglected palms at a pretty run-down looking truck stop at exit 601 right off I-10 this evening. This is right between Cibolo and Seguin. Phoenix survivors that definitely aren't getting any care: Med fan, Washingtonia, Livistona, and Phoenix all in the same area:

Here is s different plant which is also from Phil at Jungle Music, acquired in 2018 as a 1 gallon, labeled as Cocothrinax miraguama. It has more silver color on its leaf's abaxial side, fewer and wider pleats, more lax leaflet tips , and a more yellow hastula than the original posted plant. I think this id ties better to this plant than the id on the original plant.

It is intriguing to see the subtle variations in many of these palms. Your palm has a distinctly orange hastula as does the one I posted to start this thread. Most are more yellow with a hint of orange that others have posted. Your palm appears to me to best match my specimen. I have looked at the iNaturalist posts for Cocothrinax argentea and some characteristics appear to match except their hastula appear more yellow to my eye. SabalSteve, your specimen appeared to have a little less rigid leaf tips to my eye. I have another Cocothrinax which has the more lax leaf tips which I can post separately.

Yes you do but they are the unpollinated ones I already harvested them a couple of months ago. Sometimes when hand pollinated you dont get all of them pollinated! A top miniature palm for any collection. Track em down they will fit into any space anywhere in the shade.

That’s pretty darn good if it grows in your climate, that’s testimony to how much they will take. My ones in the sandstone area have more colour and are just better looking than the wet areas. There is a picture in the Palms of Madagascar book with a hillside covered in them that looks a lot my rocky area and it seems to the perfect match for their habitat. I like them easy growing for a place that needs to have a microclimate created and they do just that!

I always pick up a couple of seeds when I see them. I just know they are a good palm for my climate. And a palm is a palm in my opinion, the ones in my drier areas do better than the moist places.

They are a bit prehistoric looking, I could see a dinosaur eating them as snack. You squeezed those into your garden well. They do seem to like the drier air. Not sure how they would go on the coast with the salt air. I have one at the bottom of my property that’s is moist and not so dry environment, and the ones up the top in the dry sandstone not live it much better than the one at the bottom of the property. Hmm , not sure what I have then . Most of the fronds are full circle , accept when they first open , of course. Here are better(?) pics . I sure would like to know what it is . If it is some sort of hybrid , I may never know then. A couple years ago I thought I had the answer but after some of the posts on this thread it may not be that simple. I went out there and took some pics , but it has been very hot here , like 92 in the shade so didn’t spend much time trying to get super good photos. Harry The fronds end up circular , to the left is a fronds that opened up a few days ago. In the center is the new fronds, to the left is one that opened earlier and to the right , one that has been open for a while. Showing the entire palm Underside of fronds with sun the orangish center.

Thanks, Tom It’s a nice palm. You make a lot of good points about clay; I agree, not a one size fits all approach. I describe it as “fill dirt” here, which is a brownish clay type that is typically interspersed with river rock. Maybe it’s better draining that I realize - I’m guilty of making some assumptions, here. I do small amendments, when planting, typically. For what it’s worth, I’ve also had good luck with Copernicia species in straight pumice.

@edbrown_III Glad it made it. My Licuala grandis looks about the same, but I put a concrete splash block over its planting bed to shield it from the wind. Otherwise, it was probably going to be DOA.

Been awhile since I’ve posted photos of the Dictyocaryum in the garden. Over the years it’s evident that they are a bit out of their element in my garden, but are still beautiful nonetheless. Out of the original four, two faded away, the remaining two are powering on, although one took a hit from the months long drought last year. It seems to be rebounding as of late. The difference is apparent in the photos. Finicky at this lower elevation tropical climate. Always keeps me guessing. Tim

this palm grows pretty well in the arizona desert. Just have to keep the late day sun off it. THe ones I saw out there were more silver of leaf, more greenish grey here in FL. I thought they were more attractive in arizona.
