Palm donations to Brisbane’s botanical gardens

Very cool. Nice of you to donate!!

Butia odorata x Syagrus schizophylla F1

It was planted in City Botanic Gardens, Brisbane last year. I’ll have to pop back there soon to check on it and post a picture update. Here is the link to the latest photos of it. https://www.palmtalk.org/forum/topic/91289-palm-donations-to-brisbane’s-botanical-gardens/

    Anthurium claudiae

That's a nice one Richard... I don't know much about Aroids, beyond the common Alocasias, Philodendrons, etc. This just sent me down a small google worm hole, where I discovered that have a species - Gymnostachys anceps, Settlers Flax, that I had no idea was an Aroid. It looks more like some sort of sedge! Probably grows wild in your area, think I collected the seed near Cobark on the road up to Barrington Tops.
  8. Glad they arrived safely if a little crumpled! I think the Alectryon should be excelsus, not excelsa, my memory let me down there. Will be interesting to see how the tree dahlia goes in your subtropical climate, should be OK though hopefully. Plant the fig on some boulders!

    Happy Anniversary IPS!

Tomorrow is the last day of the 70th Anniversary fundraiser. I don’t know how many others here have donated nor the total received, but I do know the substantial dollars that owning and running this forum costs the IPS on an annual basis. If you enjoy being a part of this community please donate as your finances permit. Thanks!

For some, Florida drought is getting very "extreme"

As expected, central areas are trending down with expected totals. The SE coast meanwhile, shows an uptick. Translated: More of the same. I expect less than a quarter inch when all said and done while Dade and Broward will again need canoes to maneuver through traffic. The emoji I'm searching for is of course inappropriate and unavailable.

    Planted a Hedycepe

They don't like dry heat and resent container culture. They have to get shifted earlier than most palms (including Rhopalostylis), and they are quite inconsistent across a crop, unlike most commercial palms. The places palms are grown in California are often in areas warmer / drier than they like. We had trouble with them in Fallbrook, partly due to leaving them in containers far too long, and possibly due to the warm, dry summers.

    Syagrus hoehnei & weddelliana

Who's had luck with Syagrus weddelliana in full sun in California (or other Mediterranean climates)? I'm seeing it do better than I expected in part-sun and curious whether anyone's got it in all-day sun. I did see a couple in Rio in full sun at the bus station, but not looking the best.

    Cycad cones and flushes

This plant was acquired as an Encephalartos arenarius blue form hybrid. The male cones look like horridus cones in color. Right now it is pushing flushes on the main caudex plus two pups, one of which is a new pup. It's largest pup was my last Encephalartos flush of the 2025 autumn season, so it is probably building energy still.

  16. update, the(BxJ)xJ went into the ground in 2024(?) before milton hit. Its doing well and just starting to put out longer leaves and more of them each year. It has had Little to no feeding and a sparing use of water in the area. Its a tad over 6' tall now. I like the symmetry of the leaves compared with my BxJ. The even spacing of the leaflets reminds me a little of my cuban copernicias.
  17. My Aloidendron dichotomum is starting to split into two growing points. The branching will be at about 5 1/2 to 6 feet.

    Post your Pandanus

    Oh. I misread the topic.
  19. I kept a Ptychosperma elegans seedling alive in the ground! I only probably lost my leptocheilos although deep inside I think there might still be hope for it. I'm getting there! 😁 Btw I repotted B. alfredii and also Veitchia Joannis as you said, in deep pots full of pumice. No summer holiday for me! Unless I take them along haha!!
  20. Perhaps, but you have first to be proven worthy to get them, meaning being able to keep them alive. Keep putting effort despite occasional setback.
  21. Dispose on me!! 😆
  22. Wow, they should give your name to the palm section of the garden! Haha. When I visit I'll go see them
