In my experience with mushroom compost , it is a very nitrogen rich or “hot” mix . I used it to seed a lawn once and it worked great but palms , not so sure. Harry

Do you mean its being overwatered? Or that its simply washed away nutrients because of the aforementioned irrigation? St George is Vegas minus a few degrees. Excessively hot and dry. Edge of Mojave Desert, where it contacts Colorado Plateau. Great Basin is our north border. Unique banana belt in Utah (I've seen a few members post from here). If I didn't do supplemental watering, they likely wouldn't make it. Even my yuccas are on 1gph drips. I run the filiferas on 15gph drips, for an hour, twice a week. Seems like a reasonable amount of water for our area. Am I mistaken?

I have a heated greenhouse for my palms that can’t tolerate the cold (seeing as how I’m in North Alabama 7B-8A.) The temperature never falls below 70 degrees in there This is my 3rd C. renda (it was too cheap to pass up for its size lol) Just concerned about the drooping. They are really fussy in my experience with any kinda change. Just not sure if it’s the mushroom compost doing it, in that case; repotting will fix it, Or is it just the journey and the initial transplant in which repotting will make it worse

So when we do that, the flowers open within about 48 hours and then begin getting some pollination for seeds. Crazy, this is the only species that this is a problem with. Weird. First picture is today’s surgery. The second & third has some surgery that we did about six weeks ago.

I know the seeds came from a botanical garden just can't remember which one. It grows extremely tall doesn't branch much until it gets very tall. Leaves are very fuzzy new ones are coming in that are very red I might add another picture

Hey all, here’s something I can’t quite figure out. My neighbor and I have a couple of this species and they throw out flower spathes regularly. But they simply never open on their own. So… We’ve taken to performing surgery to free up the flowers.. The thickness of the spathe is just crazy thick. We have found that if we simply allow them to sit, eventually the contents of the spathe will just get moldy-and yet never open. We are generally perplexed at why this is happening, but it is what it is. It actually requires a combination of a sawzall, a vibrating saw, and some clippers deftly used to remove the woody section without damaging the flowers excessively. The walls are thicker than my thumb is wide.

Back end of July SST check: Some ups and downs since June but appears things are on a " warming solidly " trajectory atm. With the 4C High forecast to stay in an overall position that will only aid in helping nearshore waters warm more, plus the increasing influence from El Nino as it sends coastally trapped kelvin waves north, up the Cen. AM / MEX. coast toward both Baja and S. Cal, expect SSTs off both areas won't be going down anytime soon. While some deg. of northwesterly wind influence has limited SST warming along the CA coast north of Point Conception, expectations are that will end shortly.. 75.6F SST reading off Scripps today = a touch under 5deg to go before reaching 80F. Elida = a remnant low no longer on the board, whose moisture plume could bring another round of lightning - filled storms to the PAC N.W. shortly.. Fausto on the board, and could become a significant Hurricane shortly.. No immediate threat, but will need to be watched since it could approach the Hawaiian Islands later ..per some current thinking on it's projected track.. Next storm expected to form soon = Genevieve, and could be followed by 2 or 3 more by the first week in August as the E. PAC. conga line continues.

This is a tropical palm that requires a tropical climate . If I were to try it, I would keep it in my greenhouse and it would require heat in our 10a/10b winter. Also I’m not sure how root sensitive they are . Some palms are very sensitive to root disturbance . Perhaps some of Hawaii members can lend some advice for you , good luck. Harry

Hot 102 -106F with an extra topping of slightly gross Dew Points in the upper 50s at 3:50PM.. Will we ...or will we not... see storms make it into the valley this evening / over night?? ..That is the question for the remainder of the day... Looking at the afternoon Satellite view... Decent amount of storms up there in the mountains right now ..check.. Decent deg. of east to westerly flow in the mid / upper levels to help guide storms towards the valley today ..check.. Will that be enough to overcome any mid level CIN / Capping over the valley atm, or will any outflows generated by higher elevation storm activity hit a hot and storm killing brick wall as they descend off the foothills.. Will an inbound Gulf Surge help get the ball rolling? Time will tell.. Some WX modeling today has been pretty consistent / persistent in bringing activity into town, while other thoughts from other WX guidance keeps activity out of the forecast completely ..or has storms bypassing / hopping over town to the south / southwest.. What occurs the rest of today / tonight will determine if we see anything tomorrow ..and / or on Wednesday. If we see nothing over the next 24 to 36 hours, that could be it for valley rain chances until ..at least.. next Wednesday or Thursday as the 4C high tries to insert itself somewhere between Palm Springs and W. TX for the next few days. While mid / upper level flow may still be ideal ( easterly or southeasterly ) over AZ, expanse of 594 to 598dm heights under the ridge will create a hard to break through cap over the valley ...and over most of the lower deserts for the end of the week / start of next week. Mountains / S.E. corner of AZ may still see some activity, though it likely won't be quite as widespread in both areas as it has been recently. Beyond the start of next week? / Final days of July? We'll have to see what happens.. Modest Monsoon break could extend out a few more days, or end by the time August rolls in.. For the moment at least, Today's 10 and 14 day thoughts keep monsoon related activity in the " leans above normal " category, so, whatever break we'll experience over the next few days doesn't appear to be all that significant / isn't something to be too concerned about / is part of the normal ebb and flow of our rainy season regardless. As mentioned before, and will be discussed later, the lull in activity now could be followed by another ..potentially bigger.. active period after August arrives.. For now, yeahh, another stretch of disgusting heat is inbound, with a healthy dash of gross low 60's Dew Point readings tacked on ..That said, upper 50s to low 60 readings are actually better than the mid / upper 60 to 70 deg. readings we've seen..

They were very fast. Started in like a week. I found the flesh somewhat difficult to remove. Trying to get it off I think I accidentally stumbled on a good preparation technique. I used pliers to remove the last of the flesh and accidentally cracked the endocarp on one of them. I exposed a very clean hard kernel so decided to do it for all seeds. From that point, I put 10 seeds in a fertile potting mix I’ve been experimenting with for germination and 10 seeds in 70/30 coco coir/perlite. I put both containers on heat mats set to 26C. Within a week both containers started sprouting. After a couple of months now I’d say I’m up to 10-15 out of 20, evenly split between both containers.

How long did germination take for the Pritchardia waialealeana? Did you prepare the seeds in any way before sowing? I've got some fruit I'd like to germinate.

How long did germination take? I've just received some chamaedorea quezalteca from Colin Wilson too. Also, what mix are you using?

Recently acquired a Cyrtostachys Renda, Went to pot it up with a blend of: 50% peat moss 30% mushroom compost 20% perlite/soil conditioner Wasn’t happy with how the water was draining. Seemed like it took forever. Repotted it again with a more aggressive blend of perlite/chopped up pine bark. Drainage seems about right now, drains relatively quickly. I left it in a saucer overnight and the water was a real dark brown (from the mushroom compost) and the leaflets started drooping. I removed it from the saucer and flushed it quit a bit and haven’t put the saucer back under it. No more leaflets have started dropping but they still remain dropping. Are the dropping leaflets because of: Transplant shock Shouldn’t have used mushroom compost Or the saucer causing too much fertilizer salt shocking the roots? Should I redo my blend of soil and ditch the mushroom compost for something else? The first picture is the night it arrived (through the mail) Rest of the pictures are from the next day.

I think those numbers are fine and probably not your issue. I wish I had water numbers like that. Our water is typically around 9 now because people prefer alkaline water vs acidic so the water authority treats it to raise the pH. I think my soil is 8.5ish.
