    What does my Sylvestris need?

So as far as the parts that have turned brown completely, the last photo as an example: Should I be using clippers to remove the dead leaflets? They feel like they're barely hanging on by more than a thread. Or the fronds where the last foot is completely brown and shriveling? Or is it better to wait until the entire frond is dead and cut that off all at once? For entire fronds, my current plan is to let the nursery do that so they can maintain the diamond cut look. Or is that something that really a novice can learn pretty easily? Thanks, Damien

The not so common Howea bellmooreana

It’s a statement alright and still in the understory of the gum trees, planted on the side of a steep hill in sandstone country. It’s one of my favourite palms, growing pretty well much perfectly!

The not so common Howea bellmooreana

I haven’t found them to be hugely different in growth rate to Howea forsteriana which is of course among the most common palms on the planet. I haven’t grown enough to know, but is their typical germination rate lower than H forsteriana? I feel like there must be something more to it. Aesthetic appeal of H forsteriana with drooping leaflets more attractive to your average non palm person? Looking back over photos, mine has been in the ground for 4.5 years now. It has grown from quite a small juvenile to a good sized plant in that time. These photos are a bit over 4 years apart.

Great mature specimen photo. I love how much of a presence it makes in your garden.
  7. Any pictures of C. talliera ? This one I find the least amount of information about.. I would love to see some pictures at different stages of life please.

    What does my Sylvestris need?

Your palm actually looks VERY GOOD for a palm that you understand was dug out of the ground recently, and then transplanted on to your property. I think the browning is minor, and it is consistent with mild transplant shock. I think you should keep your palm well watered, and you probably should not fertilize if for a while. But, it would be good to hear opinions of more expert palm growers, and preferably some with familiarity with your soil conditions. Edit: Listen to Merlyn more than me.

    What does my Sylvestris need?

@ThunderMoon it's pretty common to see random frond and leaflet death after transplant. After all, they probably used a backhoe to dig it up, and they certainly had to tie up the fronds with a rope. And then wind damage on the truck will show up a week or so later. in general it looks pretty good. Don't cut anything off until it is dry and crispy brown. The palm will "eat" the oldest fronds for nutrients, so they'll turn yellow pretty soon. The watering seems reasonable. I would move the hose around randomly to make sure it soaks all the roots. Something like a half handful of Sunniland Palm 6-1-8 is probably safe. Too much can burn new roots, so in general "less is more." The next week is probably pretty toasty, dry, and sunny. I'd expect some more yellowing.

    Awesome PRA in Beaumont

Randall, I just had a thought.. you make another tiki hut, but mobile! Think about it; you roll up to every garden tour, pop the door open and start mixing! Imagine the uptick in enthusiasm. I mean, palms are awesome, but palms and cocktails.. next level stuff.. Thanks again for the invite!

Washingtonia Robusta Naturalized/Invasive in So Cal?

To a degree, yes.. More technically, robusta falls just outside the CA Floristic Province.. That said, they've been native to this part of North America ..which includes CA... for much longer than any of it had names.. Can't remember if the genus was present on mainland Mexico before Baja broke off and began drifting north and west.. Homework: ** Flora recorded within the Green River Fossil Deposits ..in Wyoming. Note the " tropical " plant Genus recorded there. Let alone how far north that is from S. Cal. ** When Palms, Ficus, and an Avocado relative now restricted to Mexico, grew around the shallow, warm sea that is now the Central Valley.. Crocodiles, Boa Constrictor, and Iguana roamed CA ..southern part, of the state at least, around the same time, perhaps a little longer. Kern Vulture, a now extinct relative of the exotic looking King Vulture got it's name after it's fossilized remains were un earthed ..in Kern County. Current assumed range of the King Vulture itself extends no further than Sinaloa, though all current inat sightings / observations have been from much further south in Mexico.

What is your current yard temperature?

82F at 6:07PM after another nice April afternoon in the low Desert.. Up, a little, under more clouds tomorrow, then back to around 85F on Friday as some cooler air from a storm passing to our north reaches the area.. Up, into the low / mid 90s for the weekend and start of next week w/ some clouds around at times, before yet another spring storm passes thru the region, ..per the current forecasts.. Like the recent systems we've seen pass through, highly unlikely we'll se much -if any- rain chances unless the next storm approaches from a direction that can provide the right dynamics to generate precip. here. High country? ..you might see some showers, and maybe a little more snow on the highest peaks. Forget any hope of salvaging the snow pack though. Overall, this oddly March -esque pattern ..in April, after the reverse, last month, looks to continue as we head through the last 15 days of the month. With that said, highly likely it will start to moderate as we close in on the final days of the month, esp. if some of the thinking regarding Greenland Blocking in the CPC's 10 day discussion and elsewhere atm pans out.. Going with that, here is how some of the teleconnections that can influence the WX pattern here ..and ..everywhere else.. are looking, with a shot at what kind of overall wx pattern is associated with each index phase ( Positive vs Negative ) *** Keep in mind that these 3 teleconnections are just 3 ..of many other players... in a weather pattern and don't always stick to the suggested script(s) *** NAO: AO: PNA: ...Regardless, we all know the heat won't be held back much longer, ..so enjoy what we got, ..while it sticks around.. Checking in, interesting how this month has trended compared to what we saw last month.. Nothing- burger temp anomalies so far.. 🤔 for the day: ...Could we actually escape April ...WITHOUT.... seeing a single 100 / 100+ reading??? ..We'll see

Washingtonia Robusta Naturalized/Invasive in So Cal?

Interesting, so now washingtonia filifera includes both robusta and filifera? I guess its kind of an oxymoron to be native and invasive. So if they’re officially lumped together that means two palms have become native to California.

    Filibusta Growth

Let me start by saying winter was ROUGH, whatever that was needs to not happen again 😂 Things are pretty good so far, it’s been so dry, I guess we aren’t getting any April showers. Bragg Blvd Washie Seed Grown from Texas This one looks the most rough because my Christmas lights cooked it a bit but it’s growing out the damage

    Gaussia gomez-pompei

Two 3-gal juvenile palms exposed to 27°F. One protected with a cotton shirt experienced 60% foliar damage. Another unprotected in a more exposed spot suffering from a nutritional deficiency had zero damage! Both pushing new growth after first rain of the year.

    What does my Sylvestris need?

Here's another photo of a bottom branch. This one has its own "thing" going on, with several leaves dead on one side. Is this unusual? Generally speaking, would magnesium sulfate help with the yellowing? Or is it too freshly planted for something like that? Thanks, Damien
  23. You won’t really know until she flowers for sure, but she does look pregnant, never tell a lady she looks fat or ask are pregnant if she’s really not. So for now Jim just tell she looks good!

  25. My twenty+ year old C. Decipiens (formerly known as Dypsis decipiens) is bulging in its crown shaft. It’s never flowered before and, for those in the know, do you think an inflorescence is hiding in there?

    Dwarf dypsis lutescens

Thanks for the advice greatly appreciated. As you suggested I might go with just a few suckers if any have a few roots. The sterile medium sounds the go. I just did a Areca vestria to see how that goes it’s sitting in a shallow tray of water with seaweed solution. Thanks for the tips!

So What Caught Your Eye Today?

Areca songenthensis, dypsis baronii black petiole, both looking good!
