Most of my new plantings this year have been Livistona or Brahea, with a few Trithrinax mixed in. Most of those are good down to or below our record low of 20oF. There are a few things that performed unexpectedly well here in the yard that will be around until the next nasty freeze, but when they go, they'll either be replaced by something good to 20oF or just removed. Unfortunately, our Phoenix palms have been decimated by Lethal Bronzing. Fusarium wilt has been been the last couple years, too.

I will be planting a Dypsis Cabadae in the next day or so . Looking forward to this El Niño we are supposed to be getting . If it isn’t too severe , should be great for the palms! A bit of what we call “Pineapple Express” where tropical moisture comes in from the Southern Pacific. My bestie in Kauai is preparing for a tropical storm that’s heading his way. I wish I had his climate. I think he is at 22 degree North latitude. I’ve been there when the tropical storms hit . They get a ton of rain with nice , warm sunny days afterward . He is on a hill above Kapaa so no flooding on his 5 acre heaven . Just a beautiful ocean view in the distance and a peek aboo view of Sleeping Giant mountain. Harry

Cocothrinax eckmanii starting to get a move on!

Ptychosperma are a bit like Calyptrocalyx, you hear and read so much about what will live and what won’t live, you just have to try for yourself as each garden and microclimate are different from each other. I have a Calyptrocalyx doxanthus and it is one beautiful Calyptrocalyx and you would never think of it as cold hardy but sure enough it is.

Ok , keep it potted then? I know that some are not as cool friendly as P. Sanderianum. My McCarthuri certainly didn’t like it in the ground . Of course , I had no canopy or micro climate back then . Just a blank slate with everything just moved here from the old house . The McCarthuri was a greenhouse palm. Harry

It’s so cool that I can grow Ptychosperma . Until I met Dave , I thought they were “off limits” or too tropical. I sure hope Sandy (Olsson)😂does as well as his! We will know in a few years. Harry

A great little licuala this one,sitting in a tray of shallow water all winter. Down to 2 degrees celcius you just never know until you try!

And you can have them along with the stinging tree!

Frustrating for sure but luckily they didn’t cost me anything. I got them for $10 each as 3 gallons. They sat in pots for a couple years before I finally figured out what to do with them. Unfortunately, after all that time and care…the super mega freeze hits. I had Canaries before but I’m not a big fan of thorny, spiny palms anymore. I have Roebeleniis and I love the look but the clean up is always painful. Another one is my Copernicia Hospita. It’s growing again and looking like a survivor but it’s covered with thorns similar to a rose but with a hook.

Like the Bismarckia palm a victim of its own success, the resorts love them and the big grand Gold Coast high rise buildings they suit them perfectly in that landscape. Very formal palm. No wonder there in the background of everything in those holiday snaps on the Goldie. Let them line up by the thousands at the chain stores for the foxys, because iam not going to grow them and take up my space for them when I can have a thousand marojejya darinii palms!

It is one of the keys to growing foxtails is drainage, heavy clay soil is not going to grow a good foxtail. Iam quite lucky to have the foxtail native to our country, after all it gave Australia a name in the palm world just like Madagascar is to palms. A well grown one is a beautiful site to behold and only a true palm nut can see that beauty, the rest just see as you say that formal look of a set standard accent setting and the diversity of a shade tree in comparison to a palmtree. The average home owner just wants an easy to care for setting with plants. Maybe mow the lawn and sit back and admire the garden. It’s only the true gardener who knows what they want in palms and it takes many years to learn such things to look for and if the foxtail fits into that category then it’s a winner and this is what they are so popular.

Well no wonder you never saw a can of fosters, who the heck drinks that dishwater. And don’t worry we Ozzie’s keep the best best stuff for ourselves! And come on down under and collect a few snakes, some of the most deadliest snakes in the world mind you, oh and I’ll put another shrimp on the barbi for you!🤣
