  2. Question, when wrapping palm with miniature Christmas lights, after bundling all the fronds up, do I wrap the entire tree from the bottom of the trunk to the very top of the bundled fronds with lights, or do I just wrap from the bottom of the trunk up to the bottom of the spear starts with lights? I also plan on wrapping the entire tree in frost cloth over the lights. Just wondering what protects the fronds if I don't wrap the bundle of fronds with lights as well. Will be wrapping one royal palm and one foxtail palm (both about 15 feet). In Orlando area and temps may dip to the high 20s this weekend. Thanks.

    Why not grow orchids?

A rare look at native beauty. Humble flowers should be appreciated too. I really like the diversity you have going on in that tree stump too.

  10. Bigger ones will likely not need major protection, maybe just a frost cloth. My neighbor just had a small pygmy spear pull but it’s one of a clump of 3 that’s only about a foot tall so it’s not very strong yet. Expect to see leaf bronzing from the cold. My only roebelinii is a potted clump of 5 that I have in my garage because they’re my precious babies.

  12. @Skenny 28 is not normally a problem for Roebellini, even with frost. Mine see that almost every winter here near Sanford, with some mild frond burn. Even at 24.6F and frost they didn't have severe defoliation burn, maybe 25% or so burn. For sure they are "reasonably hardy," even if not super hardy into the teens.

Has nothing to do with cold and everything to do with Hurricanes.
  14. Year 6 for the sabal Mexicana. The smaller is sabal palmetto 4 year seedling (trap cylinder) all were wrapped this past Friday 1/23 OKC 7b. Not to often do we get 8-9” of snow and rarely does the snow stick around for days. Hoping to unbox the sabal Mexicana in a few days

My 7-day forecast: At least most days are getting into the 50s for highs. If I am going to get any kind of 8b temps this winter, it will be Saturday night and im sure of that. A high of 37F is an extremely low bar to start off at sunset. It is hard to get highs in the 30s here without some kind of winter storm involved, which at this point in time does not look to be the case. This is just genuine cold. A highly potent arctic airmass. Those in the Peninsula should be monitoring the forecast very closely and begin making protection plans accordingly over the coming days. As for me, I am not unwrapping anything this week. Things will stay wrapped until this hell is over.

    Palms with snow

It should be fine, although we have some cold lows coming this week. This is a pic from about 24 hours later. I’m def glad the fronds rebounded back.

    Identification help please

I've got seedlings of both Syagrus oleracea and picrophylla and would be happy if either one turned out like @Cindy Adair's! 😊 Here in South Texas L. saribus looks better with some shade. Here's my green petiole form.
  19. I knew you were involved, never trust a Californian again. I suppose all the booty was headed for the black market. Going too unsuspecting buyers who knew nothing about the origin of said palms. Better yet straight into your garden. Iam sure @DoomsDave must have had a personal interest in such a heist, putting you up too it! From now on any sweet eye lid bating ladies are banned from such a nursery!🤣 Richard
  20. @Skenny, I wouldn't worry about exposure to 28°F. If there's a a heavy frost predicted I would cover it with a frost cloth or a sheet. My Phoenix roebelenii is about the same size as yours and mine has endured 27°F unprotected for each of the last 4 years. No frond damage except one year it had a spear-pull but quickly grew out of it.

  22. I don't see any indication of spear pull. As opposed to windmill palms, sabal palms don't generally pull spears easily.

    TEXAS 2025

Nothing in my yard took any damage except for the outermost, oldest leaf on my Cocos looking a little spotty. Biggest surprise to me was probably that my Bulnesia arborea and my Senegalia polyacantha covered in new, green shoots didn't have the slightest hint of wilt or leaf dieback. Ultimate low was around 30F.

I'm seeing high 20s for a low at this point, but it's been changing by the minute. Whatever we get, we get. There's 50-100 species that can handle our record low of 20F, so if something dies and the location is begging for a replacement, there are options. Probably most at risk are coconuts, Adonidia, Veitchia, and Carpentaria. Other than that, we'll see how it shakes out. The garden was getting cramped anyway.

The Pacific Ocean acts to moderate extremes. I'm on the Island (Vancouver Island) in the Pacific Ocean. We have two distinct seasons, the rainy fall and winter, and the dry pleasant summers. Spring is a transitionary mix. Regards.

Not sure what part of Lakeland you're in, but the Weather app on my iPhone is forecasting lows in the mid-20s for Lakeland on Sunday and Monday.
  27. Some photos when I move the tie up away form the newest frond.. is this the beginning of spear pull and if so, should I spray with copper fungicide. I applied it lightly to the crown prior to the ice event
