Needle palm/sabal minor winter care guide for a zone 6a/6b climate?
N8ALLRIGHT replied to Ohiopalmloverz6's topic in COLD HARDY PALMS
Do both I do, zone 6 here Mine are in the open on the north side so I protect a bit. But mine have seen dips to single digits briefly w/o protection. I have lost some but that's the game when zone pushing. Going strong 5 years in ground,at least my needle, it's in full sun -

I use pelletised chicken manure all the time even in the planting hole with soil I remove from my chicken pen and have never had an adverse reaction. I use Rooster Booster from that nationwide chain of stores that starts with B then a U. You get it. I very much doubt the problem is fertiliser burn. Only roundup destroys that quickly (2 weeks) Anyway I think it is a soil pathogen that has killed it stone dead. I’ve had similar things happen here in wetter areas and sort of randomly. Normally the main spear stalls, rots out, then falls over leaving the older leaves intact but the palm is essentially dead then. For all the leaves to give up at once though kind of says a root disease/pathogen. -

Go with mostly Sabal minor trust me, Of course you can plant some needle palms (I would, )but I would mostly use Sabal minor, Needle palms are such Fussy palms They take a couple of years to establish, they spear pull very easy as young plants. I 100% agree @PalmatierMeg There are so many cultivars you can grow and use in your yard! and still have such a great look. One of my friends always says, Experiment grow all sorts of different Sabal varieties! But plant sable minor and needle palm as your backbone! In your yard in case you have a crappy winter, that kills out or sets back the less Hardy varieties, you will always have a good looking yard Because of the needle palms and S, minor! -

Organic xtra you havent heard of that one because we keep all the good stuff for ourselves up here. Perhaps I used a bit too much on my marojejya darinii in the container at the time and I almost lost it, so iam scared of it now. But for in the ground it should be fine. Your fulva to pack up and die the way it did just suddenly it may have been a fungus. I take it Phytophera is in Tassie. Perhaps just to cold and wet, was your soil amended if so that could e the source of the problem. The one I got from you is doing fine in the ground in my garden! - Today

Needle palm/sabal minor winter care guide for a zone 6a/6b climate?
KPoff replied to Ohiopalmloverz6's topic in COLD HARDY PALMS
I’m going on 3rd growing season with both of these although in zone 8a west Texas so much different climate. We are much hotter on average all year but get far less moisture. I’ve found sabal minor is much easier to establish as needle palm spear pulled on me here the first winter. I learned they don’t like full sun here either. I would try both as well. There full sun would be ideal and you can’t overwater them if the ground drains decently. I know someone growing both in 5b with minor protection. I believe he left one needle palm unprotected this last winter and it made it through fine with some damage. -

Best Privacy Screen Palms for So Cal

I think I found my solution, the travellers palm (ravenela madagascariensis) I may buy two 15 gallon and one 25 gallon and place them staggered so the smaller specimens have width and the taller one gives height. I think it should provide relatively good screening even when they grow taller. -

Wow, those palm trees you have are real survivors! And I'm sure you take very good care of them. I brought some small Cunninghams back by car and I could already see how much they suffered on a short trip. -

Oh dear... okay, I'll keep that in mind. Alexandra might get damaged in the full Mediterranean sun, but given the limited space in my garden, it'll have to adapt. The others are smaller and are underneath, in the shade of the larger one. I've already set up a drip irrigation system for them, and I'll make sure they get plenty of water, especially in summer. I'll let you know if it holds up... I hope so! -

I'll keep in mind the possibility of cracks at the base of the trunk; I wasn't aware of that process. Although I think it will take a while to see that growth, the Purpurea was recently repotted and I imagine it needs to root well this summer. Of course, if any of yours have cracks, you can show me and I'll get an idea. -
Dypsis plumosa, when you got hundreds off seeds and you don’t want them.

Interesting. I'd never heard of Organic Xtra, it looks quite good though, with all the added bells and whistles, maybe in small doses perhaps? Here's the analysis of the one I use most regularly, pretty basic but have had no problems with it in the past. Citrate soluble phosphorus is slow release, so can't imagine that's an issue. -

That’s a beauty Jason and getting some size to it. What a nice crown shaft. I’m in Bret’s camp, mine looks nothing like your palm. Tall, thin, wispy crown and it bifurcated. Whatever mine is, it’s an attractive small palm. Tim -
