Brassia Edvah Loo 'Nishida’. These take up so much room in the house. I have three of them. In the winter, I always want to throw them out. But when they bloom, I love them all over again.

I figured they were probably doomed but I'll hang on to them for now. I've seen other types of plants that start white and green up over time so I was wondering if anyone had seen it happen with these.

This is exactly why i kinda veered away from palms. There's not a huge demand here, and what will live here takes forever to grow. I figured I'd sell banana pups and colocssias etc locally and keep some stuff for mail order. And i also make sure i have stuff nobody else has. Lol my banana pups seem to grow too big to ahip@happypalms. The fun part is when i buy bulbs, i usually dont know what I've got until they sprout. I've had the worst luck with caladiums.

They're such drama queens. I haven't touched them in months, that seems to be the key. Calatheas are righr behind them.

All did not go well, mine didn’t get much bigger before death.

Was checking on the progress of some Iriartea seed and noticed they were beginning to germinate. The embryonic leaf, cotyledon, is cute as a ‘button.’ The one seed in the group already has a ‘radicle’, the embryonic root. Just some FYI. This palm is a beast. Tim

I had one spot in my last yard where it seemed a dead zone for planting a smallish palm both the palm and its replacement died. When I dug to plant a big palm at the same site, I found construction debris, all kinds of stuff cauking acartridges etc,. I have spots in my yard now that don't drain particularly well along a designed drainage path. A few years back(4-5) we had 23 inches of rain in august, raining 22 days in a row and a 25 foot bismarck got sick and it was attacked by weevils, dead in less than a month. The phoenix rupicola next to it was fine with the soggy soil, didnt miss a beat. Different species will often have different susceptibilities. The fungus spores are all around your yard, they have impacted just a few palms at most. A soil chemistry/composition test might tell you something, but I would also take a sample or two from near healthy washies to compare. If I was going to take a test I would dig down at least one foot for the soil, dont take surface soil.

Update: Been busy this past week and haven’t had chance to check on the spores. So I have some good and bad news, some has continued growing are getting bigger and some are brown. Now I could be wrong, but I think the ones that are brown have already been fertilized and are beginning to grow their first true frond. Coincidentally, the browning ones are the oldest ones of the batch, so hopefully I’m right.

If you are after young seedlings, I have bought several times from palms.de and also babypalms.eu and I am very happy with the plants that I received.

Probably doomed. There is some indication that a mycorrhizal drench can help plants better uptake nutrients to create chlorophyll. Kind of an indirect way to see if you can swing the scales toward life. Still questionable, but not a bad experiment if you want to try.

My experiment in using the Ravenea julietiae pollen on my Ravenea glauca female flowers failed to produce any seed. I will have to wait for one of my other Ravenea julietiae to hopefully turn out to be a female or for a friend nearby to have a female. Here is the Ravenea glauca female inflorescence I tried pollinating.

Mike, I posted some photos of my male Ravenea julietiae and male Ravenea glauca inflorescence and flowers. I have both male and female Ravenea glauca and have had success pollinating the female resulting in many seedlings in the past. Hopefully these visuals will assist you in determining if yours match the male or females of these fellow Ravenea species. The Ravenea julietiae photo actually shows both an actively flowering infloresence and a spent one in the process of dessicating. From March 2025: I assumed that my Ravenea julietiae is male due to similarities between its flowers and those of my male Ravenea glauca. Glauca flowers and inflorescence are much whiter. Both are blooming now.

Also, yucca-palm in Spain ships all over the EU, as does coldpalm.nl. There is also a site called garden palms or something similar. Sometimes the box stores ie B&Q in Ireland ship canaries to Irish addresses.

@DrZnaturallyhopefully you get a nicer specimen with a long, warm late/summer autumn growth period before the protection goes up again. Maybe El Niño winter will help 2026-27? Best of luck and keep us all updated on its progress

I don't know why it's susceptible either. It's been perfectly happy and healthy as has the rest of my yard. Everything has been vigorous and deep green. Zero moisture overhead from Feb until our monsoon season started a week ago. Driest winter on record. Zero snowpack for our zone. These were behaving this way long before the moisture finally came. They get regular drip irrigation as I've lined out before. Only thing I can figure is poor soil. But I've seen folks plants these in the worst places and they somehow thrive. I spent several more hours challenging AI and uploading more pictures and other pictures of similar looking petioles, it says are perfectly normal. It contradicts itself. Regardless, I've ordered 3666F systemic fungicide. I read its the best for all true fungal diseases. I pruned all 15 of my mature palms 4 days ago and may have used the same saw blade. I cannot afford to lose any of the others. The yard is totally finished at this point with limited access and many of these trees are 13 ft ground to heart. I plan to soil drench every last one.

The Gaussia I recently adopted from @DoomsDave is happy , I guess. It just opened a new frond. Enjoying the tropical weather we are getting here. It sure got my attention this morning as we are having our coffee . Harry This little corner on our patio seems to be a great holding area for new acquisitions!

My “ mystery sprout “ revealed itself . An Arenga Engleri from last year’s seeds. I have a habit of pushing seeds in pots or parts of the garden , and then forgetting about them . This pot has had different seeds pushed in it so I can pot them later. Harry I knew when this sprout emerged it was different than I had seen typically in my garden. I get lots of Chamaedorea , the two to the right are Radicalis . Also some Archontophoenix , behind the Arenga. Good to know my old Arenga produces viable seeds! I will gently remove these seedlings in a month or so and pot them up for winter in the greenhouse. So stoked…..

I got it as a potted strap leaf seedling in the winter of 2013, grew it out for a couple of years then it went into the ground spring of 2015. So it survived 11 winters. The early years, I heavily protected it during temps below 20 F. Once it became too large to protect, it was mostly at the mercy of the elements. I tried running a propane fire pit under it during one particularly cold night, not sure that it helped since it was pretty windy. I assume the new home owner did not offer any protection during this past winter. It takes two growing seasons to fully recover the canopy to something that looks pretty good. So one winter with no major defoliation. Temps in the upper/mid teens will damage the foliage, it also isn't a fan of freezing rain in the low 20s either. Once the canopy is full, it will bloom like crazy.

Kentiopsis are very slow growing at that stage so it’s gonna take a while to see any results . Here , in my garden , only about one good frond a year in the juvenile stage . Shade and a lot of faith for that one. Good luck. Harry
