Very nice! Attended Fordham, so it good to see a palm in the Bronx.

The dominant theories are that this is: A hybrid that occurred at Phil Bergman's Jungle Music nursery in California. A variety of one of the known species. While it is possible it was an undiscovered distinct species that slipped into a seed batch, my personal thoughts were always a hybrid similar to @James B above. Genetic testing would put the proverbial nail in the coffin.

No rain for 9/10 days. You're lucky. 🤣 I am up to day 50 now since the last time it rained here. All the hand watering is killing me here. Expecting 35C / 95F tomorrow as well. I think some stuff is going to die. My Sabal Minor looks dead from the drought and that has had a few watering cans dumped on it as well. The Mexicana is still clinging on, for now. My Rhopalostylis looks dead now too. I think my total rainfall since March 1st (5 months) is only 3.2 inches. But not a drop since June 16th now (7 weeks). The forecast has no rain for the next 2 weeks either. So I am going to go 9+ weeks with no rain here.

Nice. What was your average maximum there for July? I am guessing you guys had record breaking heat and sunshine? The July average maximum in central London was over 30C / 86F. The St James Park Met station is gone now but I am seeing PWS's with 30-31C ave maximums and a 22C average, which puts it as Csa (hot-summer Med), like in July 2022. Obviously zero rainfall for London in July just gone too. 330 hours of sunshine.

Definitely. The city government orders these from Jungle Music. The employees working at Hollis have told me this variety is the most resilient to cold out of all of the various species that they've ordered. We have Archontophoenix cunninghamiana, alexandrae, and I think a few maxima sprinkled into some spots. My thought was that it would generate enough interest for genetic testing amongst the scientific community, but to my knowledge, that hasn't happened. It would be really interesting to have genetic testing done to verify or refute some of our theories as to the origins.

Every single day was above the mean high in July in Cork City this year—only two days with highs below 21 C this July—nice to see these well-sited Birds of Paradise finally blooming on the edge of the city.

Not sure what the Ph is but I’m sure its prob not great water being on San Diego municipal water. Don’t get alot of rain in so cal either but with this super El Nino we should get tons of rain this coming winter.Thanks again for the tip on chelated iron! It is working wonders on my Cycads!

Do you put rooting hormone on the air layer when you do it? I agree with above. Water and pray for roots is your best bet at this point.

Being a local San Diego guy, I believe that the name was created by the guys at a local nursery, Jungle Music. The seeds came from a particular palm at the home of Phil, the owner. Phil’s a great nurseryman, but I never got around to asking him what he felt made this particular palm different. Whenever I see the “teracarpa” designation, I know that’s the place that came from.

I would be interested in what a Archontophoenix teracarpa actually is too as it’s not something I’ve ever seen here in Australia. However there are reportedly some paler cunninghamiana somewhere out there in the wild.

I wouldn't worry about the lean...would be amazed if it didn't straighten out once it's up and growing. Richard's suggestion above about seaweed extract is a good one.

How much sun are you guys growing these in? I had to take out an r. Sapida that was getting fried in the spot I hope to plant this 15g Wallichia disticha.

I planted a 25g over a year ago that had less of a lean but it has started to straighten out. It didn’t do anything for about 9 months in the ground.

Some are totally gone. I know that but I am hoping the ones I attached make it. It’s such a pain transplanting them this big. Everything around it gets destroyed. The few I attached look totally pale. I don’t even see green in the middle. I am going to untie them next week. Can they recover still if the spear is solid but it’s totally pale or do I need green fronds to expect a recovery?

What's your water pH? pH 6.2 or 6.4 gets the best absorption of nutrients in cycads. Of course rain water is always best.

Mine never grow before June in Arizona. This year, only a female cone is emerging currently.

It’s a grafted “Bruce” Canistel. Here it is today. Here are my two white sapotes “Vernon” and “suebelle”. Here is the black sapote I think whatever that is on the leaf’s isn’t a big deal, mine have it too. The new leaf’s look good. I think you should fertilize with fish emulsion. Everytime I do it flowers all year. I water everyday.

I’m thinking hybrid. The most recent pics of these palms look more like Cunninghamiana than Maxima. So I’m thinking Maxima/Cunninghamiana hybrid. I don’t have any in my current garden. The 2 I bought and planted at my old yard were very pale to be pure Maxima. When I moved they had a few rings of trunk and did not look pure Maxima.

Any update if it survived?
