Those pots were full of cigarette butts and rubbish. I think the worse you treat a “Vulcano”, the more compact and beautiful they become. It’s like Bismarckia to some degree in Queensland. Totally taken for granted and generally overlooked because it is so common, but imagine how crazy folks would go for them if they were rare and monocarpic like Tahina. -
Absolutely magnificent, thanks so much for sharing your amazing journey.

An acre in Malanda, Atherton Tablelands, Tropical Far North Queensland

Thanks Tim. I’m already working on a landscape design in ChatGPT that separates 4 distinct geographic areas (Africa, Americas, Asia, and Oceania) 😂.- 8 replies

No, I moved to Mississippi for a while for work. Glad to be back. Much more palmy here even after all the freezes 🌴

Germinated a few Norfolk Island hibiscus trees lagunaria Petersonii
Jonathan replied to happypalms's topic in TROPICAL LOOKING PLANTS - Other Than Palms
I can't see too many issues with roots in local trees, but they can get pretty big, so I'd still be cautious. I've got 3 growing in a very wet part of our property on clay, no root rot problems, they're tough trees. Also, Lagunaria seed pods are full of itchy hairs that drop out and blow around in the wind, could be very irritating on a smaller property. My choice would be Banksia integrifolia though, as I mentioned in the other thread, a nicer tree all round. -
Oh okay fairs. For context, I assumed your parents/family lived in Mississippi. I remember seeing you post on multiple occasions about spending the holidays and stuff in Mississippi or Alabama or wherever. So I thought your last place in Katy was somewhere you were renting alone and you had just moved house/apartment.

My parents live there, so nothing left behind and even more soon to be added haha. A little over 20 mins away, not far at all by Houston standards.

KikiTiki started following Growing Areca in a terrarium questions
-
Hi all! Totally new to palms so forgive my ignorance. I germinated these Areca seeds (Dypsis lutescens according to the seller) which was very fun and they are now seedlings. I'm growing them for the purpose of putting them in a terrarium. I know, probably not a great idea as they should outgrow and require constant maintenance, this is mostly an experiment. I currently have them in small pots and am finding their growth to have plateaued quite a bit. They're planted in a 50/50 peat/perlite mix (probably not the best mix but no one has died). I'm wondering if it would be better to plant them in the substrate in the terrarium which is a similar mix. The only issue is there is a lot more substrate and it probably stays on the moist side despite draining okay. Maybe I try adding something to the terrarium substrate to reduce water retention? The amount of moisture that goes into it sort of needs to stay consistent for the sake of the animal I keep in there. I'm looking for any and all input. Their roots are coming out the bottom of the nursery pots and look very healthy. They get pretty strong LED light (maybe not enough?) and the terrarium stays around 80f/27c. I have slow release fertilizer pellets in each pot. Any suggestions on how to accelerate their growth or is it patience I'm lacking? Thanks all! Here is a picture of them early on, kind of cool to see them grow like that. germinating them was very fun
-
Than, I wouldn't! They get pretty big and the roots can snake around. Have you considered Banksia integrifolia? Very attractive tree, fast growing and with no root issues at all. I've got one within 3m of my house, not a problem. Grows well on sand or clay, drought hardy, frost hardy...

Did you leave your plants/palms behind for the new homeowner?

Furcraea macdougallii .....................
Tracy replied to trioderob's topic in TROPICAL LOOKING PLANTS - Other Than Palms
We were over at a freinds for dinner and I snapped a photo of a large specimen in their neighbors yard. I have seen small specimens planted just far too close to homes over the years, knowing that the owners had no idea how large the plants would get. There were some large ones at a nursery not far from George Sparkman's that I remember discussing with him many years ago. I never planted one, as I didn't really have the space I was willing to dedicate, despite the beauty of a large specimen. - Today

Once upon a dypsis baronii seed time
Nico971 replied to happypalms's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
I have many failure with D Baronii. I get to 2/3 leaf seedling but they rapidly die. I live in pure tropical climate. Maybe to much humidity? -
Reviving an old thread, do you know if Metrosideros excelsa has destructive roots? How many metres away from the house should it be? Do people in NZ plant it near houses?
-
Many a try on this palm, complete failure, last bss as tech survived 3 years in hothouse so I decided time for the greenhouse winter killed the lot in the greenhouse. One last attempt with them now with apparently a black seed variety, see if this one is a bit tougher, fought it though can only dress as m of such a beautiful palm. Lucky for me there are those lucky Hawaii growers who have them in all their glory!

Dypsis Decipiens Hybrids
tim_brissy_13 replied to The Gerg's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
Just had a read thanks. So is there really only 1 C andersenii? It mentions multiple attempts at growing in So Cal failing - surely other Hawaiian growers gave it a go? The article doesn’t seem to mention any effort to get pure seed from this plant which I’d expect would be important if it is truly the only known example of a new species. -
Down this way it’s been a weird winter. Mostly hot/warm with a few quick nighttime cold snaps in the 40s . Today it’s 82, sunny one minute, rainy the next. supposed to drop to maybe 49 tonight.

ficus hybridization?

This is amazing! -
Intrigued by the stilt roots of this palm attracting airborne Tillandsia and a home for a benign orange lichen. It’s a beautiful palm with the roots, spiny trunk, and entire leaves. Here are a few photos starting with the roots. Tim

That's pretty good!, very rare.

It went from 77F to 51F in the amount of time it took me to pick up a load of stone and come back to the house.

I had one in a ten gallon I got like $500 for at a PSSC auction.
