Blanched fronds means desiccated ones in Bismarckia. Unlike other palm spp dried fronds appear papery white in Bismarckia. Weevil infestation causes a secondary fungal infection and Bismarckia is quite frail, when a fungal disease breaks out inside the bud.

Couple of nice palms you have there, i could see a Johannesteijsmannia altifrons to match that trio! I have a couple of kerriodoxas floating around the greenhouse!

Here are a few cycas currently flushing around the garden. Cycas maconochiei Cycas siamensis. I grew this from seed I got about 20 years ago. A Cycas siamensis “dwarf” in the foreground that was flushing and got smashed by a Bismarkia palm frond from a storm that passed through a few night ago. In the background is another Cycas siamensis flushing. Cycas revoluta was pretty common around here until a few years ago. Scale has killed off most of them but I’ve been able to keep this one in check. It seems to like my soil prep area.

Yes , they should fall off easily . The C. Decipiens I had experience with literally rained seeds every time I went to gather them. They were green in color , about the size of a marble or a bit larger. Harry

Yeah the place has been testing me lately. I got the outside nursery panel back up again yesterday just before sundown. Will cable tie frost cloth back up today. The weekend is project “rebuild greenhouse”. Ahhh it needed some love anyway. Will re establish the guy wires and stitch in new black shade cloth. Never grow Pinus radiata.

Lehmannii and whitelockii

The Caryotas, as a genus there are some pretty amazing varieties and they can get rather large. The mitis is no exception a large clump can be a bit of a mess to the eye. I like them to a certain degree, but iam yet to be fully converted about them before I start planting hundreds of them around the garden. Easy to grow and germinate with some cool tolerance, and they will tolerate a dry season, that given they are true water lovers and will drink whatever you give them.

I bought this plant as the above sp in a very young age. It is still relatively young and grows constantly in a cold frame. To tell the truth it does not look to my eyes a real argentea, at least it has not (yet?) the silvery leaf backside. Perhaps still too young or perhaps the special growing conditions (inside, not direct sun exposure), or just a wrong id? In last case what other Coccothrinax comes to mind as possible candidate?

I’ll post this update on the Chrysalidiocarpus Blacki that I was able to sprout . The seeds came to me via our very own @DoomsDave from Larry Blacks palm , I believe. I only lost a few but managed to get 5 healthy babies into pots and in the greenhouse. They are liking our tropical heat spell . Harry Like C. Lanceolata thes have a glossy appearance already, so excited to see these doing well.

That is a lovely hybrid . We had a guy that did hybrids and I once purchased a Chamaedorea Potutalensis/ Elatior hybrid . Within 6 months it started taking over my shade house! The palm was like “ Jack and The Beanstock” ! It was beautiful but way bigger than I wanted so I managed to get it in my pick up truck and rehome it over the hill to my mentor’s jungle . The fronds were large , like Tepejelote , and it grew along the sides of the shade house . It pushed everything aside as it traveled along . I’ve never had a palm grow like that! Harry

So slow growing , Cocothrinax , but years to enjoy before they get tall. I only have one Cocothrinax in my collection , a C. Barbadensis and it has taken time to get head high. Harry

Well I have achieved one thing today, inspired you to get out and mulch away, it just puts that little extra into the garden. 🪴

Kind of weevil? Bismarckia is preferred by palmetto weevil in Florida and rpw in southern Europe. So why not also by s.a.p.w. ? But how did it get to AZ, having crossed a surrounding desert (? I am admittedly not familiar with local geography, just an assumption). If it is indeed a weevil I would start searching for the 'Trojan horse' in the vicinity.

Life has been busy and I haven’t had much time to be on PalmTalk or work on new plantings in the garden. It’s just mowing and weed wacking like crazy over here. But I did just find some time and inspiration to get a few new plantings in the ground so I wanted to document them here. I’ll post some updated pictures of the garden as well, after the new plantings. First up is Chrysalidocarpus Mijoroana: Next up is somewhat of a mystery. My old garden had a Chrysalidocarpus Pembanus hybrid (most likely crossed with Madagascariensis). I tried many times to get seed to sprout and only ever got 2 to germinate. So this is an F2 Chrysalidocarpus Pembanus hybrid, most likely crossed again with something in my old garden: And then I was able to plant some smaller Dypsis in the jungle area. Once you get that mulch on the ground it’s a game changer, it’s one thing to plant a heap of palms and let them grow on own , but if you tend to them and add a little plant culture along the way they respond much better and grow a lot happier. You can see the difference straight away, good mulch and water and palms grow a lot healthier once the mycelium start to take affect and begin eating that soil becomes just what they want. And another great benefit is the decorative affect with all sorts of colours in mulch materials, along with using a light coloured mulch it reflects light back up, using a dark coloured mulch you heat the ground up faster great gor that extra warmth in winter. I’ve seen @DoomsDave R. Oleracae in person a few times . It is a real stunner. He has named her well! I planted mine in a very protected spot out front and it grows well there. Unfortunately , until about 5 years ago when I joined this forum , I found out that I was not giving it enough water. Now it gets water , water , water . I also give it a bunch of organic fertilizer 4 times a a year. It is coming back slowly . The fronds are almost twice the size they were and the trunk has that swelling they are known for. Harry

They’re definitely more tender to the cold. A big one died on me in the big freeze of 2007. (Small regias survived nearby no problem.) Got this one as a fiver from Mardy Darian, and it’s been a rocket.

Attended the Hilo Orchid Show this past weekend and in a word, spectacular. The displays and offerings were extensive and the crowds large. Planning a trip to Hawaii? This time would be a good time to visit. For me the stars of the show were Paphiopedilum, especially the Paph. Wossner Black Wings. Too bad they were out of specimens, but I did manage to bring home something else. (Separate post) A few photos. Tim

I rescued this orchid from an ill chosen spot in the garden and gave it a new home. It has since thrived and best of all, the name tag was still attached. No idea when or where it came from, but now I’m a big fan. Tim

It’s amazing the difference a little mulch makes on the garden. A nice winter blanket, weed control, moisture retaining, you feed the soil and it looks good. So a little mulch does go a long way, now all I have to do is spread that mulch around, a couple of wheel barrow loads should do the trick!

I brought back seed from the Coastal Botanical Garden near Savannah a few years back. Nothing ever came up lol. But apparently they are erratic germinators with strong dormancy and can sometimes take years to sprout (?)

Looks male, to me. There's no sterile scales at the apex, plus they're emerged including the peduncle at this point.

You pretty much have to grow them from seed. No one has interest in growing them, other than NTCHP (RIP).

You’ve inspired me to get a layer of mulch in my garden. I’ve tilled about 4 yards of food soils in and around the plants. Now to hold all that moisture in!

Fronds are plumose!! I am famous for not fertilizing when I have a problem with a palm and post it people generally say it needs fertilizer of some kind!! It does get plenty of water because I have a hose that leaks that I haven’t had time to fix so I move it back and forth from one side of the palm to the other!! The thing that stumped me is how short the fronds are and how far apart they are I guess that will change with age

My 3 Coconuts continue to recover. Probably time to hit them again with some food. The place still looks like a mess with other recovering species. Going to be another season or two without a freeze to get her back to her splendor. The 2 in the middle are Coconuts. Left side is one of my 2 Royals and on the far right my V. joannis. You can also see the tippy top of my Triangle just below and left of the joannis.... My 3rd Coconut out by the corner of my front......
