About 18 months ago Bismarckia seed collected from populations on Mayotte Island, and after seeing the habitat picture, I scooped up 10 for myself. 8 germinated, and I gave away 6 as presents. One grew noticably faster than the rest. This palm was transplanted from a 3 to 7 gallon about 45 days ago. Here are the original seeds - the Mayotte one showing more "wings", and represent the bottom two seeds. So far, I don't see a noticable difference, except the Mayotte leaves are a bit more flexible.

Dont worry David, it was naughty old me being spanked mainly. I get a tad wicked when it comes to other peoples children and dogs that compete against my perfect specimens at the shows. Not quite on the topic about palms we dont like. Must ask you though...why dont Floridians like Sabal palmettos ? I think they are lovely, pretty things. Cant wait for mine to get big. On the other hand I really cant see what the fuss is about lipsticks, too gaudy and untidy for me. A chastened and suitably contrite Peach.

Everything is looking lush and green! That D. pembana has a pretty shape. Must be nice to have a dock at your back door! Great setting for a palm garden.

Thanks for the photos. It seems to be a small port rather than a 'yard', with all those canals and docks. That palm labelled Kentiopsis does look good and seems to be very popular among many of the palm growers who write on this website.

I collected seeds four years ago and the plants are growing up at Rancho Soledad Nurseries growing grounds in Hilo Hawaii. Jerry Hunter will be bringing plants in when they reach 10 gallon or larger size which will be in roughly two years. No one else has them with the exception of a few plants in Australia so you have to be patient. Check my post from a couple weeks ago on Dypsis Black Stem update, I posted a nice photo of the seedlings growing up. Gary

The maccabee pinched this guy in the belly, tethering him to the spot - note the concentric digging pattern; he was still alive when I found him several days later - this was in the garden of Fred Zone 10a (remember him?). I threw him to the hawks (the gopher - not Fred Zone 10a). Cycle of life and all that.

Unfortunately, this thread started after it was planted....even so, it is the very first palm I have lost to a burrowing varmint. I have no hole from which to start to look for this criminal rodent, except for the one at the side of the excavation atthe site of the crime. Ran 15 minute of water into the tunnel, and it collapsed about 8 feet from the hole. I'm going to keep a lookout for this evil beast, but it could be living in any of 3 other yards, but not here, I think. I will post photos of the dead, body if I get it, with the graphic detail of a victim of the Inquisition, no chance to repent or convert, either.

I use bait too with excellent results! Freaky you wasted $50.00 on that rod thing!!! I put my poison in thier hole for free. Randy Money well spent from my perspective. You just have to know how to use it, but I understand your limitations. My rod works great, I just poke it in the hole, give it a couple cranks, and out comes the payload. I don't even have to bend over. I have some snake oil I'll sell you! The smell of it and the gophers high tail it!!! For only $49.95 You know it's kind of funny reading this after hearing you complain about being bed ridden with back pain. I also only paid 25 bucks for this thing at the Homey, and it works great, or maybe I'm just imagining that the gophers disappear after it's use. I also bet I could place poison in gopher holes 5 to your one, all while comfortably standing. Getting on my knees to place gopher poison manually on 5 acres? Nahhh, I'll pass. Bill, For gopher control, I thought Shon had the best idea. He gives them a carrot and directions to your garden. Seems to work. Phil

There is no doubt gophers/ground squirrels eat Bismarckia.....today's inital walk through the garden evidenced my recently planted (with great effort) Bismarckia laying horizontal on the ground. The roots had been eaten completely to the base of the tree...... I don't know if I am angry, upset, shocked, or disappointed.......but I will not be good company today.

I'm shocked to hear he lied to Congress. Shocked.

I received 10 seeds of Bismarkia "Mayotte" from RPS in July 2005. 6 germinated and growth is very fast from two of them. I put them in full sun once the second leaf emerged. They seem to grow fast whether I water them a little or a lot. They are not as green as I thought they would be but the seeds did have the wings that Christrian points out. This one is two years old from receiving the seed and has been in the ground for a year and a half. This has been a great palm and I would recommend it to anyone in a tropical climate.
