Biennial - Let's explore Thailand a bit on our own
by Carlo Morici- 27 replies
- 3.1k views
Hello all, I will join the biennial 2012. I do not want to go to the post-tour or fly to Singapore but I wish to spend some days (seven ?) on my own or with friends, visiting a bit this country. Some of us wish to leave Bangkok and fly up to Chiang Mai too. We need all types of suggestions. Of course we are interested in palms but we need to see also some fabulous collections or nurseries of Bromeliads, Orchids or Adeniums. People wish to see the exotic fruit markets or plant rambles. We wish to taste all those weird colourful bananas. Any help or hint? Maybe some links? Carlo

A few pre-Biennial pics

The last couple of days I've had the pleasure of meeting and spending time with Jerry & Cindy Andersen and Al & Silvia Bredeson when they decided to come a few days early and spend it here in Manuel Antonio. Their first day here we went over to my friend Alexander's spice farm and he took us on a tour to look at of some of his palms. First stop was his prized Zamia which his wife had saved from a nearby area that was being developed. He says it gets at least 3 cones per year. Al, Jerry and Alexander checking out the newest cone Heliconia, I think he said this was "Splash" Native heliconia growing in an unplanted area of his property

OK, I haven't seen anything on this subject yet, so thought I'd start it now... I'm sure everyone is starting to get 'Biennial Fever', and registrations are now closed. So, if you are going please copy and paste the previous post, then add your name and details to the list (as we did in the thread 'Palmtalk members at the Thailand Biennial')... Let's see who's going... Daryl O'Connor from Queensland 2nd Biennial 1st Biennial was Thailand 2012

Ryan has been doing a great job of documenting our trip, but I have some photos he doesn’t have. On the 6th day of the biennial, several green team members selected option B for the day. Andrea Searle, Judy Norris, Claude Roatta and I hired a taxi to show us around for the day. Our first stop was at a beach about 30 minutes from the hotel in Barahona. There wasn’t any sand, just beach pebbles that gave a great foot massage. Does anyone recognize these toes? Judy and I are enjoying the refreshing surf.

I was recently told that the dates for Thailand might be moved from Sept. to now October. Is this possible? For some of us that are planning a trip like, we need to be sure on correct dates for various reasons. And for one big reason...flight dates including connecting flights. Could one of the board members that knows something / anything, please chime in. Thank-you. Jeff

Lorenzi's Plantarum - last stop of Post Tour
by Al in Kona- 23 replies
This was our last day of the Post Trip. We left Belo Horizonte, M.G. on an early (one hour) flight to Campinas, Sao Paulo state. Then a short bus ride to Nova Odessa where Harri Lorenzi's PLANTARUM is located. Offical name is: Instituto Plantarum de Estudos da Flora LTDA. It's a beautifully landscaped botanical garden not yet open to the general public. This garden has a fantastic collection of most of the Brazilian palm species (minus a few of the Amazonian species only). Here you will find all the known Syagrus, Butia, and Allagoptera species, many of which are not yet grown or known (some newly discovered) outside of Brazil. Here are some of the palms we saw ther…

My adventure started as I left my house in PR en route to pick up my neighbor and head to the commuter flight in Puerto Rico to connect with the San Juan airport. Just some giant bamboo toppled by hurricane Fiona that happened to fall during the night. I am pretty quick with my sawzall and by headlights I cleared the path pretty quickly. Glad I had recharged the Ryobi batteries with my little generator the night before! All our flights were on time and we were treated to an amazing pre pre tour dinner by hosts Andy and Arlene Hurwitz near the LA airport. See the group photo in the most current IPS newsletter. Many of us opted t…

We're trying to decide exactly what to pack, but we can't find any information online about what's available at Nong Nooch... For anyone who's been there, is there wireless? Pool? Exercise room? Anything else that's important? Thanks!

PalmTalk Names?
by Kim- 16 replies
- 4.5k views
Hello everyone, One of my contributions to the IPS Biennial in Rio de Janiero, Brazil will be printing up your name tags. So I have a question for you PalmTalk attendees: in addition to your name, would you also like your PalmTalk name on your name tag? For some of us, this is not an issue; my name is Kim, and my PalmTalk name is Kim -- no confusion there. But if your name is Arnold and we know you here as The Palminator it might be helpful so your online friends can identify you. If you have a preference one way or the other, please send me a message! Thanks, and see you in Rio! Cheers, Kim

Travel time to get home from Biennial ?

I was on the last bus out of Nong Nooch (6 pm) and my flight didn't leave until 2:40 am. After changing planes in Doha (I now know where Qatar is!) and then to Washington, DC, I finally arrived at my home in Virginia Beach around 7 pm. I think that makes 25 hours plus the 11 hour time difference for a total time from the gardens of 36 hours even with no flight delays. Well worth the jet lag-simply an amazing trip!!!!!! Of course some lucky folks are extending their trip to Vietnam or elsewhere. Let us know about your travel time and that you are safely home.

Paul brought me a Noongnooch book signed with greetings and well wishes from everyone on palmtalk. That was very special. Thank you everyone for the kind words, and thank you Paul and Jessie; for bringing me the memorable gift. Reading through your words and viewing the the beautiful picture book made me feel like I was there.
