Art in Doranakanda

One Palmtalk friend told me he was wondering what the pic on my avatar could be: It is a sculpture of my friend, sculptor and owner of Doranakanda. A man who can tell all botanic names of the palms we see, and sow and plant... and feed Lord Cobra, talk to the trees, help his neighbors, teach english to the children of the village and work every day for his sculptures.

2013 summer in Montreux; some temporary art and flowers in municipal gardens, designed by the gardeners who became artists for this occasion... Some people complain, others love this. I do very much like the poetry of these installations. Your opinion?

Two weeks ago I took some visiting friends from the US, Lebanon and Curacao to visit the Asa Wright Nature Centre. Originally the home of an estatem the Nature Centre is one of the first in the Caribbean. A private institution run by a board of directors, the focus of the foundation is conservation and preservation of the Arima Valley rainforest. They have purchased lands adjacent to the estate, prevent hunting and cutting down of the trees for agricultural activities. The Arima Valley as view from the porch of the Asa Wright Nature Centre

This past weekend I was invited to stay with friends at their new house in Atenas. It was nice getting away to the mountains for a change of scenery and climate. The new road from San Jose to the Pacific Coast This road shortened my drive to San Jose by almost an hour and a half!

I went to the Atlanta Botanical Gardens on Sunday. They had a concert on the greens. They gave away snow cones, popcorn and cotton candy...Of I go for the plants. If you ever want to know what ground cover works or you need ideas for your garden, visit your local botanical garden. Also, for all of you collectors out there, it gives you a chance to see some of the palms, ferns and bananas that your have on a larger scale. Here are a few pictures I took on my camera phone: What is this? Is it some kind of ficus...it in about 6 feet tall over all with large shiny leaves. My photo of the tag is blurry. Attention Aussies - Native palm location info wanted

Hi all, I am heading to Oz for a few weeks and was wanting to know of some good locations to see palms in the wild. I will be starting in Brisbane and heading up towards Cairns. In particular I would be interested in seeing Calamus species, but any palms will be great and even cycads. Also any good places to see palms in public gardens would also be appreciated. Cheers, Michael.

All the palmy folks will undoubtedly enjoy Lord Howe Island and Cape Trib the most. I also went to Botanic Gardens in Adelaide and Sydney, however, and got pictures of native trees wherever possible. Enjoy. Australia Trip Report Oh, by the way, HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!

Australia!

Long over-due, but my wife, son and I visited Australia back in February. My wife lived there for a while the winter before we met taking tourists on horseback rides through the Victorian Alps near where they filmed the movie The Man From Snowy River. We split the trip between Victoria and far northern NSW with a brief stop in Sydney in between. Our son was 2 years and 4 months for the trip. Here he is getting ready for the flight from Dallas to LA. Total trooper. After our 14.5 hour flight from LA to Melbourne, and then a 3.5 hour drive we arrived at our good friend's farm near Bonnie Doon (Merton to be exact). The bogan corner of the farm. …

author seeking to ID photo locale via palm trees!
by maryroach- 5 replies

Hi all! I'm an author and science writer with an odd request. I've become obsessed with the tropical island in my laptop wallpaper image. I want to figure out where it is and perhaps go there. I pasted a version below. Can any of you, based on the palms, give me any feedback about where this might be and/or whether it is largely the product of Photoshop? Could three palms exist on so small a sliver of atoll or whatever that is? Your expertise much appreciated! I tried to get in touch with Bill Ross, the photographer, but he has thus far proven so elusive that I am not sure he exists! (There are two or three Bill/William Rosses on the internet, but none is him.…

A week ago i was displaced due to my job. Gonna have to be in Azores at least 1 year, but off course will return periodically home to be with my kids and family. My three gardens had to be left on their own, with frequent irrigation. I am worried about all the potted stuff. Here in Azores i will work in Terceira island, city of Angra do Heroísmo. The island is big, has much to explore, including some nice and big gardens. I intent to visit all, but also other islands, specially S. Miguel, where i was told to have some incredible palms. A previous note to describe the weather here, as far as i have been told: temps never drop below 8/9ºC or above 27ºC. Usually cloud co…

Hello all, As promised, here is a small slide show from my trip to Costa Rica. It's really not so much about palms or cycads, but more to give you a feel for the country. Well.... at least a feel for some of the places I visited. I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I had experiencing it. If you don't have broadband, it might take a few minutes to load. Thanks! Enjoy the show! Please click on the link below. http://www.cycadcentral.com/Costa/CostaRica.swf

Back from Oz....and the dead 1 2

What a long month and a half it's been. Colin, I apologize for not contacting you in Oz. Shortly after tying the knot on October 28th, I got a very, very bad cold/fever. I somehow managed to pull through while on my trip down under but not without every cold remedy imaginable. When I got back to the states, I developed a horrible cough which turned out to be bronchitis. I spent two days in a local hospital with an incessant cough. It's only in the last couple of weeks that I managed to recover and get my strength back. I did my best not to let it ruin the trip but didn't want to spread my germs. Anyway, here are some photos: Calamus in the rainforest

We just got back from another epic adventure to our little slice of paradise on the big island of Hawaii! We brought my son Ty this time and he was a good sport helping us in the garden (a little ) but he was rewarded with many snorkeling and hiking trips to Kona side and beyond. It was'nt all fun and games as we had not been there in a year and in Hawaii weeds grow at warp speed! Here is a Dypsis Decipiens That I planted last year buried in weeds.

Back to Stanthorpe

I had a weeks rec leave to take so for that real change in routine, I decided to once again visit and stay at my brother in laws place near Stanthorpe, in a place called Sugar Loaf. Whilst the town of Stanthorpe is in Sth East Queensland, it is over 1000 metres above sea level and over 160 kilometres inland from Byron Bay. It is notorious for it's cold climate, and it and it's nearby town of Wallangarra are basically the coldest towns in Queensland on average temps, especially at this time of year, fortunately, it wasn't too bad for the week I was there, I was lucky. Some very cold misty mornings but some lovely sunny days. The area surrounding the town is known as th…

Bahamas, Half Moon Cay

I just came back from a cruise to the Bahamas. 1 of the stops was the cruise lines private island Half Moon Cay. When we first booked it I thought, great a day on the beach with nothing to do. Well as soon as we started to pull in to the marina I realized what my day was going to be like. And let me say this was the best day for PRA on the cruise. Half Moon cay is 2800 acres and only around 50 acres have been developed. They had nature trails everywhere. So Here are the pics from my trip.

For Mother's Day I took my Mom to San Diego. While we were there, we visited some places we used to vacation at in the late 60's - this pic taken of us at the Bahia in 1967: Unlike the rest of the world, luckily Mission Bay has not been over built since. It remains pretty much the same except the hippies and head shops aren't as prevelent : Okay but this is a palm forum and not a trip down memory lane so here's the palms I saw at the Bahia:
