I looked on our Southern Cal. Palm Society website, and find no mention of a November meeting. Will there be one, as usual? I know meetings are often announced at the preceding one, but that leaves those of us who weren't there out of the loop.

On Saturday afternoon, September 26th famous adventurer and ecotour leader Jeff Chemnick will be in the Phoenix area giving a presentation for the Arizona Palm and Cycad Society. His talk will summarize his most recent Mexican Botanical Ecotour featuring succulents, orchids, cycads, agaves, palms, beaucarneas, salvias, dahlias, cactus, dasylirions, etc. Jeff is a colorful character and his presentation will be lively and informative; particularly for those who have not yet been on one of his 2-week Oaxacan adventures. Hello, everyone: Our September 21, 2013 PSSC meeting is going to be in the Point Loma section of San Diego. Our next Society meeting will be in the Point Loma district of coastal San Diego. These two gardens are only a few minutes apart. Both are established gardens where many unusual and rare species will be seen. There will be an auction and raffle at the second garden. On January 19, 2013, the Palm Society of Southern California will hold its annual banquet., at the Sherman Library and Gardens, at 2647 East Coast Highway, in Corona del Mar, CA 92625. Northern California Palm enthusiasts, Save the date, March 24, 1-5 pm, for our annual NCPS banquet. We are looking forward to an afternoon of food and conversation as well as a tour of the UC Berkeley botanical gardens led by UC horticultural staff member Dylan Ferreira. For those who don't know, Dent Smith was the founder of the International Palm Society and was the first to plant a large number of tropical palms that far north. And since this is the 50th anniversary of the IPS many chapters are visiting. While Dent was successful in growing palms Doris tells me that since his death hurricanes and hard freezes have reduced the numbers quite a bit. This Sunday, the 24th of June at 10:00am...Palm Grove Nat'l Park, Mt Tamborine. We will be walking the trails through this lovely piece of rainforest and will see some great palms and other rainforest plants. Hopefully it won't rain too much! After our walk, we will then head down the mountain towards the Gold Coast and visit Bamboo Downunder nursery. They have a spectacular display garden with bamboo and some palms as well. Their nursery stocks some great plants that have all been hardened off to local conditions, and some are unusual species such as Physokentia insolita. The bamboos for sale are good too... Daryl
