Granted, my work area is a LOT less than ideal. Anyway, i brought the roebelenii home from my office to split it up, and good lord this is tedious. If one of these green jerks die, I'm gonna be frustrated - before I remember I'm only out $10 and ummmm I think I'm about 2 hours into this now. Good times

Unexpected Yellowing and Leaves dying off
by RobustaEnvirons- 31 replies
- 3.9k views
Hello everyone! I've recently started to notice that the leaves of my potted Washy are yellowing and browning. I live in Toledo Ohio and so I can only keep my Washies outdoors in the warm months of April-September. This particular washy was steaming along nicely all warm season. I had to bring it inside the house around the final week or so of September-early October. I keep it in my South-Southwest facing bay window and its got a heater duct below it on the floor (below the ledge). This washy was doing very well up until about a week or so ago. I had to snip off its oldest leaf because that leaf had yellowed at the tip and finally completely turned brown. That wasn'…

I'm doing cocos again!
by Kai- 30 replies

Found this nice little cocos in my local gardencentre for €10. I put it in the old pot of Pal's Lytocaryum insigne #1404 with some of the famous seramis pinebark mix. Some time ago I already decided that when I'd come across one of these, I'd give it another try. I still feel the pain of having to let my previous cocos go when I moved to Amsterdam. In 8 years time it had grown into a palm of stature and I still miss it. Hope this little guy will in time grow into a worthy substitute! Wish me luck everybody!

Coconut Palm Question

Hi guys, I was wondering what might be wrong with my coconut palm. His newest leaves are much more yellow looking than his oldest. I've had this palm for a little over a gear now and he is just starting to yellow. I have been feeding him miricle grow with a 2-1-1 ratio (water dissolve) for about 3-4 months and early this month added notice grow granular for palms and cactus. He still continues to yellow though. I've read that nitrogen deficiencies are big for potted palms and this is one way they show it. But I am not sure if is the issue because of the fertilizer I am giving it. I also water the palm every day because it's summer so it's outside now and it's hot an…

I’ve been looking through everyone’s pics of their indoor palms. I’ve got some houseplants but we’re talking crassulas, dracena, pothos, some cactus. I’m clueless when it comes to the indoor palm game. What are some suggestions if I were to get a palm or 3?

Anyone else have a jungle inside?

Last winter there was a bunch of other filler plants in here too. Now this entire room is stuffed with nothing but palms, a little line of cactuses on the window sill and the 2 bigger cactus on the side yes. The shelves of seedlings is out of control, all of this outside is one thing, stuffed into the same room is eye opening. Won’t be able to do this another year, seriously have to get this greenhouse finished by this time next year. Definitely a cool spot to hangout in during the winter.

Hi all! I am having some problems with my plant (which I think is a howea forsteriana?) and wondered if anyone could help?! The leaves are turning brown and drying up - please see pictures, are there any giveaway signs of the problem ? Have owned for around 5 months, re-potted on day 1, water around once a week when soil becomes dry, was positioned by a single glaze window in a bright room but have since moved as it can get pretty cold by that window during the night but not usually below 15 celcius. Any advice would be much appreciated! I would also like to remove the dead leaves and stems but not sure how to go about this, I don’t wa…

Germination Tips!? Joey palm
by Makaisland Palms- 3 followers

Has anyone got any tips for germinating Joey palm seeds? (Johannesteijsmannia altifrons specifically). Standard baggie method? In a community pot? If so, buried how deep, and is there a top or bottom to the seed I should aim in one direction? I searched quite a bit and couldn't seem to find anyone mentioning much about this, at least step by step. If I've missed a useful thread somewhere else please point me in the right direction, thanks!

Help save my potted majesty palm
by AlexaSay- 29 replies

Hello friends, I am very new to indoor plants but I love them! I purchased my Palm a few months ago and the ends of the pronds started to turn brown. We recently took a week long trip and I came back to a fully yellow prond. I have repotted the palm about a month ago and used some liquid plant food. I water it enough but not too much because the soil seems to keep damp when I check. What am I doing wrong ? Also should I cut the prond that is dying ?

Joey Palm (Johannesteijsmannia altifrons) as a houseplant

I am pleasantly surprised with the progress of my potted Joey palm (Johannesteijsmannia altifrons). The first picture is when I first purchased in April 2017. The second picture is 18 months later - October 2018. It really enjoys the summers outdoors in New England; it is a surprisingly low maintenance houseplant during the cold months. My infatuation with internet photos of the Joey palm lead me to discover the Palm Talk forum in 2017. Forum threads on the cultural needs and member photos of successful container culture etc encouraged me to attempt growing a Joey in my cold winter climate. I have been growing Kentias indoors for over 20 years and I treat the Joe…

I would love to hear about other people's experiences with growing chamaedorea radicalis. Also if you have pictures of your own radicalis please post them do I could see them. Thanks

To Pot-up or to Plant in ground
by Danilopez89- 28 replies

I've been wondering weather it would be better to plant my coconuts in the ground already or to pot them up in bigger black containers. After going outside earlier and putting my hand to the black container and seeing how hott! it gets I decided to pot them up! I also put my hand to the green containers and and they weren't even hot, just a bit warm. I figured since the ground would never be able to keep the roots as warm as these containers do during the cold months it would just slow the palms growth and development. Maybe next year they'll get a chance at the yard. But I don't know.... I think I can get them to grow pretty big in a large black container …

Show us what you have growing for eventual plantings. Here are mine: The empty aquarium works well with the High output T8 bulbs. I haven't set it up yet because I need to swap out the carpet for a more durable flooring. It's a 150 gallon that will house a Malawi predator tank as it was before. Last time it was running it housed Buccochromis rhodesii, Nimbochromis fuscotaeniatus, Dimidiochromis strigatus, Naveochromis chrysogaster, and Tyranochromis macrostoma. This is my original hobby the palm hobby came many decades later. All the palms will one day find a spot in my gardens if I can find room! They include: L. nitida BxJ (BxJ)xS …

Fertilizer for Pots

I know there have been a lot of threads on fert, but wondering what people use for slow release when they have a lot of pots? Looking for more cost-effective solutions than Osmocote and the like, as long as they work well! Something I can buy in bulk, 50 lb bags ideally, that works well and is cost effective. Appreciate any thoughts - my container ranch is large, so looking to minimize expense if possible!

Pygmy Date Palm Soil and Care
by Dartolution- 28 replies

Hey guys, I had several pygmy date palms for years, until one year I forgot to take them in and it dropped down to 12F and frozen them all to the core. (Zone 7b) I lost 5-6 yr old palms. It sucked as you can imagine. I had 2 large pots in particular that had 3 trees per pot. Each tree had 1-2 ft of trunk on it. So this year Ive re-landscaped my entire property, and planted mediterranean fan palms in my back yard (zone 8a). I also have 2 sago cycads on my patio I plant to overwinter in the house. I wanted to get a 3 trunk pygmy date palm from lowes or HD and pot it up on the patio as well. Does anyone have any advice with t…

Germinating Phoenix Dactylifera 2.0... tips?
by RaychHasDatePalms- 27 replies

I'm giving this the second go-round.... yes, I am crazy enough to try growing a date palm from seed in a pot in MI.... again. I actually had fairly good results the first time; I went through the germination process with about 20 seeds and had 3 grow into good-sized seedlings. They looooved hanging out on my balcony in the summer and hot fall, and were fine through their first winter and second hot summer/fall... but went through quite the crisis when I brought them in and put them under the grow light this fall/winter. Poor things. I have one that MAY pull through, but I doubt it...... Anyway. We moved from our hot 3rd floor apartment to a drafty townhome in the me…

Repotting Johannesteijsmannia altifrons
by maxum2610- 1 follower

I bought this Joey palm in Spain this summer (the one next to it with one leaf is a J. Magnifica). The brown tipping was there when I bought it, probably due to too much water. They were standing in water at the nursery. It's been growing slowly but steadily, and is just starting to push up a new leaf. The problem as you can see from the pics, is that the roots are growing really fast and have now started to shoot through the bottom. So the question is, does anyone have experience or pointers on how to repot a Joey and what soil mix is best suited. Right now the soil mix seems to be red Spanish clay with some peat and compost added. This mix drains like nothing I've seen …

I think somebody in my street died.. and he or she had a potted Trachycarpus Fortunei (maybe Waggie, couldn't tell, but Fortunei is more common) that likely wasn't watered for a week or two. Sad story, but since I am a palm enthusiast I am trying to save this Fortunei. Can it be saved? Here are the images: The spear looks firm, but it was completely deviolated otherwise. I cut off the brown fronds and kept the spear. I also root pruned it as I fear the dead roots could cause rot (maybe this wasn't a good idea..).

Cleaning up in the greenhouse blooming rats

After the rats demolished some reinhardtia gracilis seedlings the usual casualties in mortality has happened. So time to clean up the old pots with the soil in them, for various reasons to prevent places for disease, weeds and bugs to live. If you leave them there you always water them for some reason automatically seeing a container and think I should water it. And just to keep things tidy and clean.

Hello everyone. I spent way too many hours last night perusing the forum and being intimidated by the vast amount of knowledge y'all have so I thought I'd make an account to ask for your sage advice. I am brand new to palms and plants in general. I bought a beautiful Bamboo Palm specimen (Am unsure of exact species, would appreciate if anyone can identify) I named Robert. I was told he was going to be around 4ft, but when delivered he arrived at 5'8" (with spider mites which I am currently trying to handle) which was a lot bigger than expected, and now within 3 months has grown to almost 7ft, which presents a predicament for me as my ceilings are only 7ft tall. So my…
