Large indoor howea forsteriana specimens

Hey guys! I live in Seattle and today I walked through the WA State Convention Center downtown for the first time since covid hit and noticed they completely overhauled the indoor plantscaping and botanical design, a large part of it being the addition of a series of absolutely stunning howea forsteriana specimens. The largest was about 25 ft tall and solidly trunking which was a delight to examine as this is by far the biggest I have ever seen in real life. Just wanted to share some photos on here, I know I'm always looking for examples of larger/more mature howea specimens indoors so I thought some of you might find it fascinating

sabal palmetto seedling needs

Good Evening, I have about 70 sabal palmetto seeds germinating. I am wondering if anyone knows what the light, water, and fertilizer requirements are for these. I can't seem to find anything for young plants. I am assuming not to fertilize the first few months. Water once the soil is dry. Do they get full sun or should they be in the shade? How old do they need to be so I can fertilize and put into full sun?

Orchid bark mulch

Hi, I have an indoor majesty palm I repotted a few days ago. (picture) I have a spare orchid bark potting medium - is it a good idea or not to use it as mulch? The pros I thought for it were moisture retention (Israel, 35-40 degrees on many summer days), and the potting mix has 25% perlite so I thought some type of cover might help drafts from blowing them away. Any cons or problems? Thanks

Fragrant flowering palms in pots

Does anybody know which palm tree that can be grown in pots that give off fragrant flowers? I thought I read someplace before that there were a few, but I don't remember if those growing outdoors were the only ones with fragrance; or if there are dwarf variety; or even a miniature variety that could be kept in pots indefinitely. Any help, and where to purchase one; or more would be very helpful, and thanks.

Sabal palmetto seedling

i have a Sabal palmetto seedling that my buddy shipped to me fr Florida and I have I have it in my bedroom for the winter. It could probably take the cold outside here in Keizer, Oregon zone 8b/9a but I wanted to keep it growing through the winter. Since I have had it it has put out 1 strap leaf and is now developing a leaf with splitting leaf margins. I am shocked by how fast it is now growing. The leaf that it is currently developing has gotten to where it is now in about a month. I keep a daylight led on it for 12 hours a day. I noticed that when I switched to a more warm white led as a way to alternate the lighting spectrum to provide more of a balanced lighting spect…

Root sensitivity?
by JohnAndSancho- 12 replies

What you're looking at is a mass of roots that have pushed all the way through a "self watering"/bottom watering pot. This is my queen, my Washy and big Cat palm all look pretty similar. Obviously I'm gonna have to repot these in spring - how sensitive are the roots in these 3 species? I'm gonna take my time and do my best not to hack them apart, but are any of these particularly sensitive in their roots?

Like most of us palm lovers, we own palms we have no business growing in our zones. So, it got to be that time of year so I brought in all of my zone 9 palms indoors and left the butias and sabals outdoors. As for my zone 9 palms, They've been indoors for about 2 weeks now and most are exhibiting lower leaves browning and dying off. The spears still look great so I figure this Is just due to the low amount of light and photosynthesis so my palms are cutting off nutrients to these lower fronds. But with these two palms, my Actinokentia Divaricata and my Rhapis, they both have gotten this very dark brown/black color that has rapidly taken over rather healthy leaves. This ha…

On Light, or the lack thereof
by Funkthulhu- 12 replies

As can be expected for Nebraska, nothing I have is in the ground, just pots. (and now I'm in an apartment again, so yeah...) Anyway, what palm species of yours seem to do well in low-light environments? I'm thinking specifically offices, bedrooms, etc. No grow-lights, and maybe not even near a window. I've got space I can fill, but I'm afraid putting palms in some of these nooks would be a death-knell due to lack of direct window sun or at least intense light. Questions? Comments? Short stories?

We bought these majesty palms from a local florist last summer and had them out on our deck. We live in Wisconsin and it gets fairly hot and humid during the summer, but obviously in the winter it gets cold. We moved them indoors once it started getting cold. We have a large room with a lot of windows where they receive sun for about half the day. Its 70 degrees inside and 30% humidity. The fronds have slowly turned brown and died off (see pictures). There are a couple unhealthy looking sprouts. I had another one of these that I had in Michigan for 5 years that was grown inside the entire time in similar conditions and ended up getting huge. I'm not sure what I'm doing w…

Bare Root Problems
by earthworm73- 12 replies
- 1.4k views
I usually have to buy palms off of the internet if I can not find them locally . Unfortunately some online growers like to send plants bare root which I'm assuming to keep the cost of shipping down (I know bare root & mail order is tough on plants). I don't have much luck with keeping most of these plants alive past a couple weeks. Right now I have two needle palms that look awful and I've only had them about 10 days. They were sent to me with roots systems that were not very good (slightly brown, not many feeder roots and too few IMO). What do you do to bare root plants when you get them in the mail to ensure survival?

Struggling Kentia Palm
by anyca- 12 replies

Hello everyone! Fairly new to taking care of a bigger palm, we have had our Kentia since summer last year. I'm turning to you all as I have no clue what's wrong with it even after hours of googling. It started with leaf tips and now it is whole fronds going. Initially we thought it was from overfeeding, but we have been washing it through for months and it keeps getting worse. Any idea what's wrong with this green baby and what we could do to save it?

Noticed this palm in a hotel. Definitely not the typical Kentia or Majesty. I'm not as well versed as many here so I thought I'd throw it to you all... The petiole is rather golden/yellowish.

So I used these pots to grow some Sabal Causiarum from seed. The problem I have with them is the very large hole at the bottom. After awhile the dirt seems to just fall out with any disturbance. Anyone have some good ideas or experience keeping the dirt in place ? Much appreciated in advance T J

I've got some big ones and a random gusty wind can take them right down.. Due to where I have to keep them for optimal sunlight, they are not placed around anything that I can anchor them to. I've tried tree stakes but they look kind of ridiculous and I'm concerned it will girdle their trunks. Any Ideas? Thanks.

Bought a good looking Chinese fan from a local nursery. Gonna put it on my back patio that is part sun. Any suggestions on care? Also if you could take a look at the pics provided and let me know if there's anything I should be aware of? I'd like to separate them, but could I do that?

After repotting my Joey, it was time to repot the L. peltata var. sumawongii. I adopted these both in 2017. The sumawongii was starting to need water more frequently than once/week, was pushing a new spear, and showing roots at the pot’s drainage holes. Also, the sumawongii was likely getting jealous of its brother Joey’s new larger pot . As you will see in photos below, it has been 24 months since it was repotted. First photo dated 2017 and the remaining photos are June 2019 repotting time. At first I thought the new pot would be too big, but once the root ball was in the pot it seemed just right. There was enough room to add fresh media below the root ball and abo…

Hi! I have a bit of different palm seeds. Some of them I got from @@DoomsDave, others from elsewhere. I try to provide them with the right conditions (coconut fiber with perlite, moist substrate), unfortunately it's been half a year and nothing germinates. What can I do wrong? Cocothrinac dussiana, Hyophorbe verschaffeltii, Dypsis Decarei, Dypsis lanceolata, Syagrus romanzoffiana.

Phoenix Robellinii clump divide
by Born- 1 follower

I purchased a Phoenix Robellinii not to long ago. As in most cases, there were several clumps in the pot. I decided to separate them both yesterday. I cleaned my instrument with Isopropyl Alcohol and cut in between the two; severing the root balls equally. I then planted each one in an appropriate size potter with extremely well draining “soil”. I then took each Pygmy and gave them a nice warm shower, letting the water drain out the bottom. Now I wait to see how well the separation technique worked. Did I do everything right / wrong? Any suggestions or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Chamaerops humilis var cerifera...painfully slow
by mdsonofthesouth- 11 replies

Both put on 2 fronds right away but have taken months to barely push out a 3rd. They get OK sun, sit at 70f+ and get controlled watering. Gave them a shot of organic sea kelp and water few weeks back and thats what seemed to start the next fronds. Might do a monthly light handed "feed" for them from here on out. Love the way these palms look but they grow slow as molasses in winter time!

Is this really a Pindo

Found this at Home Depot marked Pindo Palm. Do Pindo Palms at this age have fan-like leaves? I would have guessed Mexican Blue Fan which are common here in the Phoenix Valley, or possibly Bizmark. The leaves are noticably blue next to all the other Palms.

Coccothrinax seedlings help

Hello everyone. I'm kind of panicking, because I've had these seedlings for almost a year now and their little strap leafs have folded over like how some seedlings of mine do when they're about to croak. I've been watering diligently and they are in sandy loamy fast draining soil. They've been under bright lights, but I had to move them for a day or two. Are they toast? :(
