White Bat flower

This is my first to bloom in Puerto Rico when I could be there to see it. The PVC pipes are about 3 feet above ground to give you an idea how large this flower is. I like the black bat as well but it's flower is smaller and not as easily seen in the shade where I grow these. No one is likely to walk this part of the farm until April so I can't collect the seeds, but I see ebay offers them. I hope my seeds will fall to the ground and multiply as I wouldn't mind a bunch of these under the shade loving palms. No scent that I remember, but the huge glossy leaves are pretty even when there aren't any blooms. I have grown the black bat in a pot in my greenhouse in Virginia, but…

Tropical fruit tree seeds

Back in October some time a lady who moved up here to Lake Placid, Florida, (from Miami) gave me a bag full of assorted seeds she said were off of tropical fruit trees. All the seeds were mixed together in one plastic grocery store bag. She grabed some seeds and started telling me what each one was but it just went in one ear and out the other. I haven't seen this lady since then, so I can't ask her again what seeds were what. I later sorted the seeds into bags of like kind. About a month later I sowed most of seeds in big community pots, and only plan to keep a few of each when and if they germinate. Before sowing, all of the seeds that had an outer shell on them (mos…

Tropical Tree Search

I am looking for the following two trees: - Fernandoa magnifica (Common Name is snake tree) ( http://www.zimbabweflora.co.zw/speciesdata...ecies_id=152440 ) - Leucadendron argenteum ( http://www.plantzafrica.com/plantklm/leuca...ndronargent.htm ) I would put this in the Wanted area but that area appears to be for palms only. I have not been able to find either of these at any of the South Florida Nurseries I have contacted. Please PM me if you know of anyone selling these trees, preferably in Florida. Thanks

Views from the "new" deck

Way back in '04 Hurricane Charlie blew through, taking my Florida room off, and it has taken 6 years of stars and stops to build a covered deck, but finally it was finished this summer. The roof is 50% LT Lexan, perfect for orchids and some bromeliads. I am really fortunate to have abt 1000 square feet of shade house on the property, so i get to rotate plants in bloom and in colour. Anyway, here are some pics.....

Stevia rebaudiana
by Al in Kona- 3 replies

I got a small plant of Stevia rebaudiana (see pic below) which I found in the herb section at our local Wal Mart Store. I'll either pot it up into a larger container or just put it into the ground. I read up on it and found that it is native to portions of northeast Paraguay and even into Brazil. I thought it was interesting enough to add this info: The sweet secret of Stevia lies in a complex molecule called Stevioside which is a glycoside composed of glucose, sophorose and steviol. It is this complex molecule and a number of other related compounds that account for Stevias extraordinary sweetness. The Stevia herb in its natural form is approximately 10 to 15 tim…

I am a sucker for pretty coloured broms but for some reason they all turn green in time. What am I doing wrong ? Also I have some Alcanthera imperialis rubra and dont really know the best type of position for them. They grow so slowly I dont know if they are happy or not. Can any of the clever brom people out there give me some hints ? Thanks Peachy
