While on a recent trip to an offshore Island of NZ, I found many small Pine like trees with seed pod/cones which when open contain just 1 seed in each half each with a wing. Does anyone know of such a pine? Or was this just a Pine impostor???

Is it possible for Z.pumila to cross with Z.furfuracea? I grew this plant from seed from my Z.pumila. This plant gets damaged by frost and has somewhat larger leaves than the mother F. pumila. Pic 1 plant in question. Pic 2 mother plant.

Greedy grasshoppers .

I was laughing to myself after saying 'grasssshoppers' in that cartoon like spanish style of those 2 crows ,, was that Bugs Bunny ? small things amuse small minds Because , some very hungry critter has stripped nearly all foliage of a few canes of Etlingera .. never seen this before. Same clump has a branch broken falling into it . And needs a few bits removed as its getting to big for allocated garden space . To scared to get into this clump as it has a large nest of horrible stinging wasps .. time for the evil poison spray as know 4 spots they are at now ...

Mango flowering
by Kumar- 7 replies

My two mango trees are nearly 20 years old - both planted from seed by me. From 1996 they have been fruiting, at the usual time - Mid March to Early June. The last two years though they have been flowering at odd times - whether due to hormonal changes, climate changes, pests or something else, I don't know. This time also I see mature flowers and some tiny developing fruit as well(in Winter!!) - indicating that the blooms started in mid-November, perhaps earlier. Take a look - comments please! Here is the tree Flowers

I've got someone here in Lakewood/Long Beach area looking for a good quantity (25-50, maybe more?) to plant out in a large semi-public open space. Looking for up to 15gal, but 1's, 5's, liners welcome. (They can grow out onsite.) Prefer vigorous, non-rootbound specimens. Send me a PM if you have any lines on any. Thanks.

Cycas I D ?
by BS Man about Palms- 19 replies

This Cycad, I'm not so sure... and either was the sellar.. he doesn't really like to sell, generally wants to plant everything.. He grew this from seed and this came in a batch as "Cycas north vietnam"... some were later decided to be Cycas fugax... which I saw and were awesome!! Holding only one or two giant leaves... But he allowed this one to go as he was not sure whether it was a runt or a hybrid... (runt fugax maybe?) Anyway, if its a hybrid, I think it will be cool!! no spines.. Any ideas or thoughts?? I should have got a pic of his fugax as they were 5' tall straight up with only one or two leaves per plant.

How to tell a Cyathea robusta from a C. brownii ?
by Steve Mac- 1 follower

The C. robusta being from Lord Howe Island and the C. brownii being from Norfolk Island both just off the coast of Australia, they are similar, Which do I have? I'm pretty sure that the little one has grown from a spore of the big one, I found it nearby in the garden. We also have C. australis and C. cooperii but not for as long and not that close. Is there a specific sign that I can look for? The first two pics are the big one and the next 3 are the one that came up by itself.

Has anyone else ordered seeds of this banana? I've read that it is the only native banana to Madagascar and was just recently re-introduced. I received 100 seeds back in June and about 20-30 of them sprouted very quickly. I potted them into individual bags and stuck them in the shade under a tree all during the rainy season. They grew but the leaves were very stretched out. Then a lot of them got too water logged and started dying. When my shadehouse was built in Sept, I moved what was left of them into more sun and they started producing leaves with much shorter petioles and the plants really perked up. I am trialing this banana here in Costa Rica to see how it do…

Uxi Liso - Endopleura Uchi
by amazondk- 10 replies

One of my favorite Amazonian trees is the Endopleura uxhi, known as the uxi liso, or smooth uxi. This tree is a primary forest tree and grows to be very tall and very big in the forest. There is a beaurtiful specimen at the Tropical Hotel here. I stopped by to take a few pictures. I love the way the branches weep and the leaves hang down. The fruit is an important food source in the forest. And, the bark is used to make medicinal teas.

Cola nut trees
by Cindy Adair- 10 replies

I enjoy learning about the plants used in our everyday lives and growing as many of them as I can. Thus everyone who's ever had a coke owes thanks to this strange fruit which I'd never seen until a few years ago. Now I have several flowering trees which are very ornamental fast growing evergreens. Mine have yet to fruit, but the fruit pictured here (given to me by a friend)easily yielded more trees from planting the bright pink seeds. No, I haven't planted coca, the other part of coca cola's name, since I try to keep from being arrested.

Could someone please ID this cycad for me please ? This photo was taken 17 December whilst still in it's bag. I waited a while longer for the leaves to grow then planted it a few days ago. Now, what is it again, not being a regular cycad nutter, I plum forgot. ? Also, have you photos to share of the same species of cycad at an older age ? Thanks in advance.

Anybody in Florida (or the Gulf states) growing Eucalyptus phoenicea or E. miniata? How about Eucalyptus erythrocorys,E.woodwardii,E. curtisii,E.melliodora, Corymbia gummifera, intermedia, teticornis? I'm in Houston,Tx.,barely Zone 9a . With 30-40 freezes a winter, it's unwise for me to try growing Eucs, but some have lignotubers and come back from the b ase after freezing to the ground. Here's what I think I know: Corymbia ptychocarpa will grow in Florida and Houston,Tx . It will come back from the lignotuber after taking a good hard 20 degree freeze - I saw that first hand .Corymbia citriodora grows in Florida, but would be difficult in Houston because it's so cold (h…

"The Plant List" from Kew, MOBOT
by fastfeat- 0 replies

OK, here's the (apparently) most current list of accepted plant names, circa 2010, from a collaboration of Kew, Royal Botanic Garden, and Missouri Botanic Gardens. Lots of new names for old friends-- --Montezuma cypress (Taxodium mucronatum) is now T. huegelii --Pongam (Millettia pinnata) is back in Pongamia --Yellow oleander (Thevetia peruviana) is now back as Cascabela thevetia. (T. thevetioides is now Cascabela thevetioides). --Rondeletia cordata, referenced in Alberta magna post, is now Rogiera cordata. --Lavender trumpet vine (Clytostoma callistegioides) and the related C. binatum are back in the expanded Bignonia. --Vanilla trumpet vine (Distictis …

I planted a few Aloe barberae hybrids in the front yard in early 2008, one called Hercules and one called Goliath. I was curious to see the grow next to each other and track their growth rates. I sort of thought the Hercules would grow faster only because I have seen a lot of tall ones of these, even second generation ones, and have not seen too many of the Goliaths very tall (the Huntington has a few, unlabeled, that are about 8' tall or more, but they seem to have been there for many years). I am surprises as Aloe vaombe is a much faster grower than Aloe dichotoma. Still. First shot is of these two in November, about 6 months after the Goliath was planted and 8 mon…
