Aucuba with the black plague
by BeyondTheGarden- 2 replies

I have 2 Aucuba on the W side of my house, they get full sun all afternoon. They keep getting these blackened spots. When I bought this place a year ago, there were blackened leaves on blackened stems (looked more systemic rather than isolated sites). I cut the blackened parts off late last winter. I know that they do not like full sun, so I plan to move them this winter. But the spots also don't look like sunburn but appears more like a root rot/fungus issue? I have read they are prone to a couple kinds of root rot- Would it be bad to transplant them elsewhere if this is the case? I have read that there is no cure for fungal/root rot issues other than movin…

Picked another batch of lepidozama perrofskyana
by happypalms- 3 replies
Another one of peroffskyaana had huge batch of seeds on it. 23 years old this one such a beautiful colour in the garden when you first see it. I will collect the rest of the seeds in about another week when they fall off. A great cycad to grow with demand for it on the local market with landcare groups and gardeners wanting to regenerate their land with native species. I have another one about to burst open with seeds so a few more to collect and propagate and grow on.

Does anyone have experience growing these Soap Dogwoods? I am wondering whether they'd survive the winters in Texas (a single dip into the low teens seems to be the rule lately). ~ S

Germinated a couple of clivia from my own seeds. I only grow the yellow ones from my garden seeds of a variegated plant. Which every 20 or so seeds I get about 3 or 4 variegated ones. Slow to germinate and grow, these ones will used in the understory as border plants.

Heliconia schiedeana fruit/ seeds questions
by Patrick- 1 follower

I have a nice clump of Heliconia schiedeana and I finally got a good flowering year out of it! The Sul-Po-Mag that I was advised to throw out really did me well. 10 or 12 blooms or so. While wandering around the yard yesterday I noticed that some of the fruit on these flowers are turning blue. I'm assuming viable seed? I just noticed one on a flower; but there are many others that look of viable size and are still green. I figure they will ripen shortly. I'd like to try to grow new from the seed or at least collect and give out what I can; or start new plants and spread them around. Has anyone harvested and germinated heliconia seeds before and would be willing …

Hello, I’ve noticed some black spots on my musa Basjoo. Wasn’t sure what to do, so I just hit it with a copper fungicide hoping that will solve the issue if it’s a fungus. There are more on older leaves than new.

monocarpic bromeliad

G'day I've been growing Brom's and tillandsia for 30 odd years and all bromeliecaea except one are monocarpic. They do, however, produce vegetative offspring, or 'pups' but the mother plant won't flower again. The only bromeliad that is polycarpic is Tillandsia complanata. Mine was grown from seed since 2014 and has flowered at least once a year since 2019. This year (2024) set 22 inflorences around March, set 3 seed pods and now is flowering for a second time!

Another mail order this time some super rare cerotazamia sp Toman. I know absolutely nothing about the species except it’s rare and if it’s rare then i definitely want it. I think I might have to do some research on this on. They will definitely be going into a group planting in the garden.

Growing edible bananas.

I was wondering if anyone has experience with growing edible bananas in a frost prone area? Last year I planted some dwarf cavendish by the house and they froze to the ground last winter (low of 25). This year I planted a small kokopo that is supposed to be "short cycle". Im guessing the dwarf cavendish will freeze to the ground every year here in Zone 9A but does anyone know what to expect from a kokopo in 9A? I also have a giant unknown variety that grew 12 foot this year so far. If anyone would have an idea what kind it is I would appreciate some help. I will post pics in order that I mentioned. Thank y'all for the help!

The tankervilleae or nuns cap orchid is a tough robust perennial with some beautiful flowers. As for the others go I have no idea what they are so they can remain that way unknown to me. It certainly has been a great year for flowers this season.

Sowing a few lepidozamia perrofskyana seeds
by happypalms- 0 replies
Picked about 140 seeds from my perrofskyana in the garden. The first time it set seeds after 23 years so they take a long time to get this stage for viable seeds. A weevil does the job of pollinating them so if you have one and it’s not setting viable seeds that could be one reason why. The seeds from the ones in my garden where wild collected not about 35 minutes drive away in the forest. A great Australian plant to have in the garden slow growing but worth the wait. Tolerant of all sorts of conditions even fire. They take about a year to germinate so adding even more time to grow a decent size plant.

Australian Syzigium wilsonii in flower

A fantastic Australian rainforest tree the wilsonii with its red powder puff like flowers an amazing tree. This one is about 24 years old one of the first trees I planted in the garden close to the house for good reason to view it just outside the door. If you’re after a good Australian rainforest tree then this one is a winner cool tolerant dry tolerant (it likes a good drink to look at its best) to a certain degree. Does well in part shade full sun I think it would struggle unless getting plenty of water. One fantastic Aussie tree.

A nice afternoon planting some plants in the garden.starting with a pachypodium, cycas Miquelii, anthurium veitchi, medinilla, maiden hair tree fern and a cerotazamia subroseophylla. A few good ones for the garden in the years to come. All plants are proven cold hardy. All I have to do now is add water.

The Vine Thread 1 2

I couldn't find a good consolidated list of vines for trellises or arbors, so I figured I would start one! I've been considering doing a free standing lattice/trellis vine wall (not attached to the house) or have climbing vines go over a pathway archway. So I have been looking into ones that flower (preferably a lot) and also are not self reseeding or highly invasive. I have enough maintenance problems already... Here is a good article on a few Florida options: https://blogs.ifas.ufl.edu/marionco/2018/03/29/trellised-vines/ Blue Sky Vine (Thunbergia Grandiflora) - rapid growing with aggressive tendrils, not too frost hardy in zone 9. but flowers all year i…

Tropical fruit? tree ID

I was brought these seeds from Thailand and these are the plants that sprouted . After searching on internet, the closest I've found is Artabrotys hexapetalus. At first I also thought they could be mangosteen, but I'm pretty sure they aren't, because seeds lose their viability very soon. What do you think?

A little order of a few hose buono and a few japonicum. I first saw the japonicum on palm talk and thought I need that plant for a bit ground cover colour. A bit of research I found one. But I come across these ones the other week on a plant site and had to have a few more for stock plants. Ten years time I should be getting a bit of stock from them. They arrange it worse for wear with the public holiday slowing down the postal service they should be fine in a month or two looking good.

Calling All Cycad Experts (ID Help)
by The Gerg- 18 replies

I went to my local Green Thumb recently and I noticed they had some cycads mislabeled. The first pic is a Cycas revolta x deb. hybrid labeled as an Encephalartos longifolius. Then they had this (I believe) Encephalartos ituriensis labeled as the Cycas revolta x deb. hybrid. Then they had this third one labeled as Encephalartos ituriensis. (I’m pretty sure it is not) So the third cycad pictured is what I am hoping for help with. The remaining label would be the Encephalartos longifolius, but this is not like any longifolius I’ve ever seen. Perhaps they actually had one that was sold as something else b…
