I planted 4, 3 gallon Sabal minor's today in an area that I am raising for erosion and flood control. When I began digging, I noticed that the dirt was made up of primarily earth worm castings and composted leaves. You can see an earth worm in the second shot, but not so clearly in the first. I used about 2 handfuls of garden soil for each planting, but it is looking like a good start. Now, to plant some Sabal uresana's next week. BTW the cat is alive and is just taking his siesta.

New palms to protect.

Hi I am in zone 7b, southeastern USA. I planted a Pindo, Sabal palmetto, European and 2 Saw palmetto in April. Not new at palms but looking for ideas on best way to protect them. The Sabal is a large trunking tree and will require something different than the smaller ones. I would like to avoid going too complicated like building cages out of PVC pipes and the likes. But this being said I will do whatever is needed. So what would you do? Throw blankets over during cold snaps? Wrap in x-mas lights? Heating cables? I put the Sabal where it is, to have access to the crown for protection. Thanks for your time Pat

Filibusta growth
by Pee Dee Palms- 1 follower

So, I've decided that I am going to start documenting the growth of my seedlings I germinated from old filibustas in MB. The filibustas I got the seeds from have been through every single bad frost we've had for at least the past 20 years. They've seen 8a weather multiple times, without any form of protection. I'm sure the babies are at least hardy to a colder 8a zone, possibly warmer 7b. Remember, this may not seem too impressive, but MB is an extremely humid place, we definitely aren't a desert. These old filibustas took bad freezing rain with lows of the upper teens earlier this year. All of them look unfazed. The main reason I want to do this is because I am going to …

What is this issue with my Washy .
by WSimpson- 12 replies

It hasn't been below 16F in 3 years , since that 2018 terrible winter here . I lost 2 established Palmettos during that 2018 cold snap , but my protection kept this Washy healthy except for possibly the cracks you see . Are those cracks normal ? I don't think it was cold under my protection but maybe I had some colder spots ? Should I stuff anything inside those cracks like wood putty or something that would seal the cracks ? Thanks , Will I just read this article : https://gardenersyards.com/cracks-in-my-palm-tree-trunk/ I just found this . Zoom in and check out where I restricted that area of the trunk for the better part …

Oregon jungle all lit up at night

So we all know someone around here likes to post photos of their jungle garden at night - I’m looking at you @DAVEinMB! So I thought I would show you my multicolor display. Unfortunately the camera makes the spaces in between very black looking. To the eye the color extends and lights up all the foliage. Anyway here’s a few.

Robelleini palms in Zone 8b

Just a few pics of some robeleinni palms, I know I’m probably spelling that wrong but these palms have survived at least 3 winters that I know of. I don’t know when they were planted or how many winters they have survived here in south Alabama but I’m surprised they have survived. the small queen was planted last spring and this was its first winter in ground. It almost looks untouched. My neighbor has queens that almost completely defoliate but are coming back. last pics are just a robusta I found at a Lowe’s today.

Would you consider Rhopalostylis "cold hardy"?
by EastOahuPalmNut- 1 reply

As far as I know, the Rhopalostylis species are the most extreme Latitude native palm trees: 43 South (are any Palms native near 43 North?? I don't think so)? But as you know, latitude doesn't equal temperature (as each 1000' of elevation makes a 3.5f/2c difference) I tried sprouting some Rhopalostylis in Honolulu (both sapida and baueri). Currently the baueri seem fine, and although the R.sapida seeds sprouted, they eventually died ( I guess they can't handle 28c) Is anyone successfully growing them in "cold" locations (where the overnight temperature goes below 0c)?

Trachycarpus and watering system (6b)
by ThePole- 2 replies
Hello everyone I am new here, this is my first post. My name is Maciej and I live in Central Poland, 6b hardiness zone. I really love palms. I have an areca palm indoors and one chamareops humilis outdoors potted. Here in Poland, despite the cold in winters (and recently heat waves in summers), quite many people grow palms outdoors. Mostly trachys, sometimes washingtonias and chamareops. Due to cold we have to use heating for wintering. Usually people use heating wires and white cloth. Some people even use graveyard candles (those that are ment to keep the heat for couple days). Anyway, I wanted to plant my first trachycarpus fortunei plus poten…

Hello everyone, This is my first post on the Palm Talk Forum and I thought it might be useful to share that my mature pair(Male on right, Female on left) of Sago palms (cycas revoluta) have just started flushing. We had a rather chilly winter this year and unfortunately I neglected to cover them resulting in almost total defoliation . Nevertheless, they both appear to be coming back with the male on the right pushing out new growth quite quickly. While I also have a few other specimens these two are definitely my pride and joy.

When to put Windmill Palm from 10” pot into ground
by Gaga Iowa/Arkansas- 1 follower

Hello! I moved here from Iowa and need all the help I can get with palms, which I love! My first one froze in the winter of 2021 after having it for a short 8 months. We live in Arkansas zone 7B. March of 2022 I bought a Windmill Palm in a 10” pot thru the mail. It has been doing amazingly well so far! It has sprouted several new fronds. My question is when do you suggest we put this baby in the ground? As you can see we do not have prime soil! It’s a lot of rock! She is still in her 10” pot she came in. Should we plant it this summer, fall or wait till next spring? And please give us any suggestions and guidance as far as planting and then ferti…

Blooming Mule
by Manalto- 10 replies
I planted my 3 gallon mule (from Mule Palms of Mississippi) in July of 2018. Here is a shot, taken today, of what appear to be three inflorescences emerging from the trunk. (Is it correct to call the main stem a trunk?) My baby's all grown up! My understanding is that any seeds produced will are likely to be sterile, should I remove the inflorescences so the plant can direct its energy into growth? Your advice is welcome.
