Sabal: You Name it, You Got It...Free Seeds
by AggiePalms- 4 replies
Hey everybody I think the pictured trees are an unusual Sabal variety; they are growing nearby to my house, and are native I assume? They get large (up to 3-5 m) and costapalmate with very twisted leaves - more like S. maritima and some of the other non-native species. Not so much like typical S. palmetto or S. minor, or have I just been missing this variety all these years? These grow right down to the brackish water line, no more than 30 cm above the water, on a very small island. They are very hardy, having survived temperatures of c. -9C. If you can tell me what variety of S. palmetto/minor these are, I will happily send you some very fresh seeds. If you can…

Hello All, After just having my second winter in a row of falling into the teens, I am having a zone denial giveaway of some of the palms I have been keeping in my greenhouse, but will never be safe in the ground here in the 8B/9A border region. I am located just northwest of Houston (Magnolia, TX) and am giving away the following to anybody that wishes to give them a better home (preferably closer to the coast, inside the loop or as a patio plant). There will be no shipping of these palms, so PM me if you wish to pick any up. 4 Beccariophoenix Alfredii (~3 gallon pots) 2 Beccariophoenix ???? (labels wore off, thinking madagascariensis) 3 Gallon Pot…

seeds of Rhopalostylis baueri v. Cheesemanii
by Darold Petty- 4 replies

I have approximately 50 seeds from last autumn's harvest. The harvest date was November 17th, 2024. Free to the first respondent within the 48 contiguous American states. If you don't require so many, then play it forward and distribute some to other persons. My parent tree comes from wild collected seed by Keith Boyer in the 1980's. I obtained it as a 4 inch seedling from Keith's friend and my mentor, the late Garrin Fullington. I ground planted the parent tree April 13th, 1986. Because of my always too cool microclimate the parent tree makes seed only every 2 or 3 years. I gave seed to Jungle Music several years ago, so if you purchased this species from Phil it …

Rhopalostylis sapida "Chatham Island'
by Darold Petty- 4 replies
When I was a beginner, (a long time ago) senior palm people were most generous, with both their time and plants. Now it is my turn to 'play it forward.' This palm is the seed offspring of my large adult, it is perfectly grown in a Stuewe TP812 pot, it is six years old from seed, and needs to be ground planted. I would hope that this palm goes to a coastal garden rather than a hot, inland site like Walnut Creek or Concord. No shipping, you must come to my garden for this palm.

A few free palms - come dig em up

I'm going through the yard and removing a few palms that don't seem to be 100% happy. I'm looking to dig these up ASAP to make room for new plantings. Come and help dig them, bring a few pots and they're yours. PM for details, directions. First come, first served. Hyophorbe Verschafeltii Gaussia Maya Licuala Ramsayi All 3 of these got a bit beat up this past winter, but should recover nicely if put in a good micro-climate and given some TLC. I'd rather give them away and give them a second chance then throw them in the greens bin. I might have a couple more as well, so whoever comes to get these might end up with some more if interested.

Wondered if any interest in a bumper crop of seeds from this big mama? It has survived for 20 years without protection and has been flowering fruiting for a decade atleast. I usually throw out the seeds but wondered if I had been wasting a coveted commodity? Let me know- it is a beauty, but slow growing.
