Snow in all 48 Contiguous US States today?
by Keith N Tampa (ex SoJax)- 12 replies
- 3.1k views
Today (Feb 12, 2010) there are winter storm warnings for parts of Northwest Florida. If it snows here today, there will be snow on the ground at least somewhere in all 48 contiguous states. Obviously Alaska has snow. No word on the mountains of Hawaii, but if there is snow accumulation in Florida today, this will be the first time in recorded history that all US States (excluding Hawaii) have at least some snowcover. I'm pulling for some Snow in FL just so this absurd winter makes it into the record books in as many catagories as possible. That probably sounds weired, but if we've had to endure it, we ought to earn some kind of award! I'm reasonably satisfied how t…

Hottest July Ever
by happ- 30 replies
- 3.1k views
Interested in how hot July was nationwide and if any records were broken. July 2006 was the hottest July ever in Los Angeles. Suburban San Fernando valley recorded an all-time maximum of 119F/48.3C. I've been a "weather watcher" for National Weather Service for 26 years. JULY 2006 [elevation 910F/227M AveMax: 94.7 NormMax: 88/31C AveMin: 71.4 NormMin: 66/19C Hot and quite humid with isolated thunderstorms much of the month but nothing more than a trace on several days at my station. Ocean temps have been warmer than normal nearly all summer but periodically spike into "El Nino"-like readings of 80F+ increasing mugginess at night. Haven't noticed …

The upcoming "modern solar minimum"
by Turtlesteve- 6 replies
- 3.1k views
I watched a presentation on climate and the upcoming solar minimum. The short summary is that we're headed for a ~30+ year period of reduced solar activity starting in 2020. The IPCC / global warming consensus tends to discount the impact, but the presenter believes that solar forcing has been underestimated, and we'll see severely colder temperatures in the next couple decades, potentially leading to crop failures and famine. (2nd link is the presentation which is quite long but interesting) https://www.livescience.com/61716-sun-cooling-global-warming.html https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_yqIj38UmY This certainly wouldn't fit with my long term gard…

Why am i considered 10a? 1 2
by tvold- 42 replies

So I live in Golden Gate, which is basically a subsidiary of Naples and its a few miles east of downtown. On maps it is listed as a 10a hardiness zone, yet the coldest it gets here in winter is the lower 40s with a Cold Front. Winters here are windy however, which brings with it wind chill. Does this count towards the plant hardiness zone, or not? If not, I've NEVER seen it in the 30s here (besides like 2010) without factoring in wind chill.

"This isn't winter . . . right?
by happ- 35 replies

WXAmerica - October 15, 2006 "If you know anything about how to read numerical model output, you have probably realized that the longer term forecast for most of North America is more than a bit bizarre. It is unusual to get one intense blocking ridge at high latitudes in October. But if you buy into the line of thought provided by the most recent, there are TWO impressive blocks present: a thumb projection complex along the West Coast of the continent and a regressive lateral Rex signature in the vicinity of the Davis Strait and NU. Even if the 0z GGEM (a clear outlier with its presentation of no PNA-styled ridge) turns out to be correct, near-record cold will be p…

Talked with a friend and his bride who spent the month of March 2008 in Austalia and New Zealand. They are serious Fishermen and went to Cooktown for the Great Barrier Reef.Sadly, the weather did not cooperate and their guide said it had been horrible for 6 weeks and this was not normal. When is the best time to go for the best weather? He was also talking about a very good beer called Huighy(sp).Very dry.The pictures were unbelievable.

9A versus 9B
by ruskinPalms- 32 replies
- 3.1k views
Hi all, I think that I live a 9B area. I used to live in a 9A area in Tampa Palms/New Tampa area. Pretty much looks the same in 9B as in 9A. Queens, Dates, washingtonia, Butia etc. What grows in 9B that won't grow in 9A? It seems to me that if you can grow it in 9B then you can probably grow it in 9A and even 8B...Things don't start to seem too different to me until one is in a true 10A area. Maybe I am missing out on some wonderful 9B and up palms? I suppose that the issue is that palms for 9B must be just as frost and freeze hardy as palms that live in 9A/8B. Any thoughts?

We have had a horrible winter, and from the looks of things, it is nowhere near being over. another 4-6 inches of snow expected? Come on! My tulips haven't even bloomed yet. There are barely any trees that are even beginning to show signs of life in them. What a depressing spring!

Whens this So Cal weather stop? 1 2

This time and Oct-Nov are some of the hardest times for me. The Santa Ana type weather, makes nice temps, but my usual 50%+ humidity drops to under 20% and I start getting sunburn, yet its still cool enough at night that the palm roots are slow on the moisture uptake. So the best I can do is spritz my leafs and pray for some partly cloudy days...

Mixed bag this week. Third coldest Oct day on record (since 1970) on Thursday with high 9.9C would be a below average day mid winter. Near miss of a late frost yesterday morning had the local growers nervous and get helicopters in air. I got away with a low +1.6C , nothing froze. Trying an A. Alexandrae as experimental planting, has been in a pot outside since early June, protected by the house but that should have got it used to the climate before planting hopefully.

Houston, New Orleans, Jacksonville Climate

The thread detailing Royal Palms growing in Jacksonville made me wonder how Jacksonville, New Orleans and Houston compared in their climates. There were a few Royals growing around Houston up until the cold spell of 2010 hit when Hobby Apt. recorded 21F. Comparing the climates using this resource, http://planthardiness.ars.usda.gov/PHZMWeb/InteractiveMap.aspx showed the following average temps for the years of 1976-2005. Jacksonville Mayport Navel Station - 24.8F Jacksonville Downtown - 23.5F Jacksonville Craig Apt - 23.6F Jacksonville Royal palms off Goodby's Creek- 23.7F New Orleans near downtown - 25.5F Houston near downtown - 24.5F Houst…

Weather since 2021 in South Texas
by Victor likes palms- 6 replies

Ive been studying highs, lows, and rainfall in Beeville Texas and I’ve noticed that every year after 2021 has been poor for plant growth. 2021 brought above average rain but every year after has only had precipitation in the low 20s and even only 18 inches while the average is 32 inches in Beeville Texas. Pretty much every winter after 2021 was harsh and we even saw 17 at the start of the year; what could be the reason for such poor weather. Have any of yall also observed poor weather since?

Obviously, this is dry season in the South part of the State. This is a normal occurence commencing in Nov.-May each year.At Palm Beach International, our normal rainfall to April 23 is 12.67 inches.Tampa is 9.58 inches through April.Currently,PBA reflects over 18 inches of rain although it appears quite dry. Most of our rainfall this year has occurred at night, which is common but more so this year.I can not locate information specifying what the current rainfall is this year in area's like Tampa.Does anyone know? Additionally,I note that average yearly rainfall at PBA is 61.39 inches.Tampa is 44.77.What accounts for this large difference?

Frost
by PalmTreeDude- 27 replies

I thought I'd start a thread about frost after seeing very thick frost this morning. How often does your climate get frost (if it even does)? Where are you located? Are you in a cold/warm microclimate or have any? Here in Virginia, near Chester, we get frost commonly during the Winter and late Fall. Tree canopy (I use Leyland Cypress for this, it works well) and close proximity to water can protect places here from a lot of the first frosts. Here was the frost this morning, the first picture is from my front yard (exposed to the West) and the second picture is from a lot with Leyland Cypress in it. Notice how the closer you get to the Leyland Cypress the less frost there …

Orlando Area Winters- Recent Trends and History
by Matthew92- 1 follower

This thread will be to discuss Orlando, FL's winter climate. Winters have definitely been trending warmer in recent years in Orlando. Vacationing in the area over the last 20 years I've watched the Araucaria get to South FL height and things like bottle palms, rubber plants, and foxtails appear all over the place. Here's an interesting web page that shows the annual low for each year in Orlando back to 1894. The recent warm trend seems to start around 2004, after which getting to the upper 20's or even below freezing (the last 10 years) has become rare (sans a couple notable outliers). Before this period, it appears that one could generally count on getting to at lea…

What are you covering?

I was curious what everyone was covering this fine week of lovely temperatures in Florida and the East Coast. Last year I spent a lot of time doing this, this year, not so much. Here is what I have covered: Borassus - because it is low to the ground, frost gets it and it never gets to grow in my coldest area. Gaussia gomez-pompae Tahinas - again, hardy but low to the ground tropical Encephalartos Orania palindan and ravaka Things I am not covering: P. pacifica and woodfordii - if they die, so be it. Tired of being burnt back Raphia farinifera C. fallaensis Bottle/Spindles Veitchias
