Montana Weather Records of the 20th Century

My dad sent me this information from the Weather Service about weather events in Montana my home state. Maybe this has something to do with why I like it in the tropics. Montana is a great place and I hope to get up there the last part of August. A few of these events I remember. As I kid I can remember gong to school in the morning with the temperature around 40 F and by the time I came home in the afternoon it was 15 F or more below zero. The weather along the Eastern Front of the Rockies can be real abrupt and extreme. It is a beautiful place though. dk National Weather Service Unveils Montana's Top Ten Weather/Water/Climate Events of the 20th C…

Houston, New Orleans, Jacksonville Climate

The thread detailing Royal Palms growing in Jacksonville made me wonder how Jacksonville, New Orleans and Houston compared in their climates. There were a few Royals growing around Houston up until the cold spell of 2010 hit when Hobby Apt. recorded 21F. Comparing the climates using this resource, http://planthardiness.ars.usda.gov/PHZMWeb/InteractiveMap.aspx showed the following average temps for the years of 1976-2005. Jacksonville Mayport Navel Station - 24.8F Jacksonville Downtown - 23.5F Jacksonville Craig Apt - 23.6F Jacksonville Royal palms off Goodby's Creek- 23.7F New Orleans near downtown - 25.5F Houston near downtown - 24.5F Houst…

Strange summer in SW FL

Here in the Cape Coral/Fort Myers area we are having the most bizarre rainy season weather I've seen in my 16+ years residence. It's becoming the rainy season that wasn't. It is July 17 and we've had rain on 2 days: July 2 - 8 inches and July 11 - 0.8 inches. Other than that - nada. Normally we get almost daily thunderstorms that form inland and travel west toward the Gulf. But for weeks we've had on-shore winds in which clouds form over the Gulf in early morning, then travel over us to rain inland. Or storms form just north and cross the state but never come further south. It's like we have a dome over us that deflects all rain elsewhere. Our skies stay blue and almost c…

Is there a city in California that has ever stayed above 70 for a full year?..that has never dropped below that temp for 365. The Beach Boys eternal summer for real. Historically has that happened? in modern times?..This year we never went below 50. A mini record for us in the eastbay.Unofficial-just me saying that....

Too much rain

It is getting quite soggy in Houston. We have had over 7 inches in the last month at my place and 55 inches in the past year. This would be fine if it were 7 inches in a summer month as the heat would "boil" it away. Some parts of Houston have had 60 inches in the last year, more like S. Louisiana. If we had sandy soil it would be a different matter but with clay soil and cool temps it is too soggy. Only been a couple of years since we were in a drought and parts of Texas still are in a drought. Note: This is not intended to irritate the folks in California. Ed in Houston

This upcoming January 14-16th event is looking more and more like the December 2022 event. Although along the coast they are predicting rain, we are forecasted to be dry through then. I’m seeing 17-19°F predicted in Central Texas Monday night, currently, but based on the last few years will assume it will drop further. Dallas may see 12°F or lower.

I know that weather has many variables and is extremely difficult to even have a clue what is going on ... but one can say that west Europe biggest influence on the weather is the gulf stream. due to the gulf stream it experiences a mild winter and cool summer and a constant rainfall. the last 2 to 3 years countries like France, Belgium, UK, Ireland and others have seen Hot summers, bitter cold winters(severe snowstorms and temperatures almost 10 C lower then usual) and a reduced rainfall. Does anyone knows if there is some kind of database of the gulf stream flow during the last couple of years ?

Palm Springs Aerial Tramway closed due to a weather forecast before-hand, which ended up in helping 1000 people from being stranded. I issued a High Wind Watch for the tram three days before the event. The event would be a high wind event, in which I did expect very strong winds hitting the area Tuesday evening into the night. 24 hours before the event, I issued a Hurricane Wind Speed Warning. This warning states that wind speeds of 74 mph or higher will be possible at anytime during the event time-line. I spoke with tram officials about this impending weather forecast event. They asked me how sure I was and I said 100%. In fact I said "If I am wrong, fire…

Obviously, this is dry season in the South part of the State. This is a normal occurence commencing in Nov.-May each year.At Palm Beach International, our normal rainfall to April 23 is 12.67 inches.Tampa is 9.58 inches through April.Currently,PBA reflects over 18 inches of rain although it appears quite dry. Most of our rainfall this year has occurred at night, which is common but more so this year.I can not locate information specifying what the current rainfall is this year in area's like Tampa.Does anyone know? Additionally,I note that average yearly rainfall at PBA is 61.39 inches.Tampa is 44.77.What accounts for this large difference?

Coconut Palm in Sarasota, FL?
by Emarohl- 1 follower

i just moved to Sarasota and am starting to plant trees in the backyard. I recently bought a small coconut palm maybe about 2-3 feet tall and planted it outside in our yard. I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts or advice on a coconut palm growing here. I know they aren’t very cold hardy. Our house is less than .5 miles from the Sarasota bay and west of highway 41. The yard gets plenty of sunlight and has good drainage. Will it be too cold for it to survive? Can I cover it in cold snaps to keep it warm? Coldest it got this year in our area was 38 deg. According to maps online we are right on the cusp of 9b and 10a. Wondering if anyone in the area had experience with…

This is what the last big CA storm turned into for us here in the mid Atlantic. Keep in mind the temps on this map, are pretty much our HIGH TEMPS for the day today, 1/30/10. Also, this snow pushed all the way to the coast in places where it almost never snows. Places like Ocean City, NJ, Rehoboth Beach, DE, Ocean City, MD, Assateague Island, MD, Va. Beach, VA, Duck, NC, Corolla, NC, Nags Head, NC...etc. Even the Carrituck lighthouse out in, I think Corolla is blanketed in snow, which is a very rare sight in deed. The low for our area here in the DC metro tonight is 12-14F inside the beltway, and 8-12F out in the colder suburbs. Oh well, at least if its going to be fr…

Share your personal microclimate!

Share your personal microclimate, if you have one! A few days ago, we endured the coldest night of the winter. Our "summer" begins on March 1, so the coldest nights of the year are now over. However, a few nights ago this town in northern Florida experienced an extreme low temperature of 30 degrees Fahrenheit (one weather source was even showing 29 F for 15 minutes-30 minutes). However, my thermometer memory shows 32.3 Fahrenheit as the record low temperature, and yet I am in a colder on the western outskirts of town. In real (live) time, WeatherUnderground.com was showing 34 Fahrenheit at several private thermometers in or around the centre of town (during the c…

Damaging weather in Costa Rica

Tropical Storm Tomas finally moved away after giving us rain for more than a week. Entire towns along the Pacific Coast were flooded, the road through Manuel Antonio collapsed and is in danger of sliding down the mountain, and just the other night a landslide in Escazu (suburb of San Jose) killed more than 20 people. The landslide happened less than a mile from where I am currently staying in Escazu. All the roads to the Pacific Coast were closed and a National Emergency was declared. Things are starting to return to normal, but it will be a long time before the damage is cleaned up and fixed. Here are a few photos of the road in Manuel Antonio that people emailed …

Always looking for suspected climates that may support Cocos nucifera at greatest latitude from the equator. We know the Newport Beach, California Coconut at 33/37 North was the certified specimen in the northern hemisphere until it’s demise. No update on the status of the La Quinta Coconut at 33/6 has been provided. The Corona California Coconut needs to be genetically tested to confirm that it is not an interesting hybrid at 33/87. Port Elizabeth, SA at 33/99 is said to have specimens of Cocos nucifera. Although no pictorial evidence has been presented, a review of its climate and understanding of unique warmth in the surrounding water makes it a real possibility. …

http://activefiremaps.fs.fed.us/activefiremaps.php?op=maps&rCode=sfl Fire in Flagler county has been smoking Gainesville out for several days. Last night was VERY smokey, reducing visibility to less than a quarter mile at my house. They update this map daily, I believe. If the current drought continues, expect this map to "light up".
